Heavy Episodic Drinking and Hazardous Drinking Among Japanese Young Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study on Prevalence and Associated Factors.

BACKGROUND: No studies have investigated alcohol consumption patterns in a mixed sample of students and employees among Japanese young adults. This study estimated the prevalence of problematic drinking in a sample that includes 18- and 19-year-old individuals and aimed to identify factors related to problematic drinking, which may ultimately contribute to its prevention. METHODS: This cross-sectional study conducted in 2019 included 5500 randomly selected adults (18-24 years) from 11 cities. Data on geographical and socioeconomic characteristics, alcohol consumption, and drinking patterns we

In vitro simulation of drinking events in cattle.

Drinking causes a rapid decline in reticulorumen temperature (RT) followed by an exponential recovery, which may potentially impact the reticulorumen ecosystem. However, the nexus between drinking events and their effects on ruminal fermentation and microbial diversity has not yet been studied, either in vitro or in vivo. Although artificial (in vitro) rumen systems are widely used in ruminant research to simulate the reticulorumen environment, no such simulation has been described to consider the impact of drinking events on the reticulorumen environment. Therefore, we have developed a method

How do honeyeaters drink nectar?

We investigated the kinematics and biomechanics of nectar feeding in five species of honeyeater (Phylidonyris novaehollandiae, Acanthagenys rufogularis, Ptilotula penicillata, Certhionyx variegatus, Manorina flavigula). There is abundant information on honeyeater foraging behaviors and ecological relationships with plants, but there has never been an examination of their nectar-feeding from kinematic and biomechanical perspectives. We analyzed high-speed video of feeding in captive individuals to describe the kinematics of their nectar feeding, with specific focus on describing tongue movement

Drug interactions of cola-containing drinks.

Cola-containing drinks (CCDs) are among the most common drinks in the world. There are some reports on interactions between CCDs and some drugs. However, there is no review on reported and possible interactions of CCDs. Thus, this paper attempted to provide a comprehensive review on this subject. It is well-accepted that CCDs are acidic and contain caffeine. It has been suggested that these two properties potentiate interactions of CCDs with different drugs in the context of both pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetic, which includes drug absorption, metabolism, and renal excretion of drugs. It

[On the rating of Helicobacter pylori in drinking water].

There are considered the issues related to the possibility to rate of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) content in drinking water. There is described the mechanism of of biofilm formation. The description refers to the biofilm formation mechanism in water supply systems and the existence of H. pylori in those systems. The objective premises of the definition of H. pylori as a potential limiting factor for assessing the quality of drinking water have been validated as follows: H. pylori is an etiologic factor associated to the development of chronic antral gastritis, gastric ulcer and duodenal ul

Alcoholic drinks as triggers in primary headaches.

OBJECTIVE: This project aims to investigate the role of alcoholic drinks (ADs) as triggers for primary headaches. METHODS: Patients followed in the Headache Centre and presenting with migraine without aura, migraine with aura (MA), chronic migraine (CM), and tension-type headache (TH) were asked if their headache was precipitated by AD and also about their alcohol habits. Individual characteristics and drink habits were evaluated within two binary logistic models. RESULTS: About one half (49.7%) of patients were abstainers, 17.6% were habitual consumers, and 32.5% were occasional consumers.

Rhabdomyolysis: a lesson on the perils of exercising and drinking.

Acute abdomen is a common presentation to the emergency department (ED), accounting for 5% to 10% of ED visits. Of these, 10% require surgery, and 25% go undiagnosed. Usually, most of the cases of undiagnosed abdominal pain are in young women with pelvic etiologies, although occasionally, unusual causes of abdominal pain lead to diagnostic dilemmas and can have adverse clinical outcomes. We present an unusual etiology of abdominal pain in a young man, who presented with acute onset of right lower quadrant pain accompanied by nausea and vomiting. He was an amateur boxer who had recently intensi

Face burns caused by flambé drinks.

This study was conducted to identify the epidemiology of face burns in Korean adults caused by flambé drinks in the hope of developing preventive programs. We reviewed the medical records of 25 patients with burns caused by flame drinks that were admitted to the Hallym Burn Centre, Hangang Sacred Heart Hospital, Seoul, Korea, during the 30-month period of July 2002 to December 2004. The injuries occurred while drinking and spilling the whisky on the flame (68%) during the hours of social gathering and festivity. There were more men than women (male:female ratio=21:4); the mean age was 27.5+/-5

Alcohol and drink driving in the United Kingdom.

The background to and current status of the drink driving law in the United Kingdom is explained. Screening tests and analytical methods for alcohol in blood, breath and urine are described. Legal limits of 80 mg/100 mL in blood, 107 mg/100 mL in urine and 35 microg/100 mL in breath have been set. Penalties for exceeding the legal limit include a twelve month ban from driving for a first offence and three years and ten years respectively for subsequent convictions. Special reasons why a licence should not be withdrawn are considered together with the effect of medication on alcohol levels. Fin

Water drinking as a treatment for orthostatic syndromes.

PURPOSE: Water drinking increases blood pressure in a substantial proportion of patients who have severe orthostatic hypotension due to autonomic failure. We tested the hypothesis that water drinking can be used as a practical treatment for patients with orthostatic and postprandial hypotension, as well as those with orthostatic tachycardia. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We studied the effect of drinking water on seated and standing blood pressure and heart rate in 11 patients who had severe orthostatic hypotension due to autonomic failure and in 9 patients who had orthostatic tachycardia due to idio

The effect of controlled drinking in alcoholic cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND: Cardiomyopathy is a potentially fatal complication of alcohol abuse. In alcoholic persons who develop cardiac dysfunction, abstinence is thought to be essential to halt further deterioration of cardiac contractility. Some evidence indicates that reducing alcohol intake may also be beneficial. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of moderate "controlled" drinking on cardiac function in patients with alcoholic cardiomyopathy. DESIGN: 4-year prospective cohort study. SETTING: A university hospital in Barcelona, Spain. PATIENTS: 55 alcoholic men with cardiomyopathy who had been drinki

Alcoholic drinks: important triggers for asthma.

BACKGROUND: Although anecdotally alcoholic drinks seem to be common triggers for asthma, little is known of the prevalence, the characteristics, or the mechanisms underlying these reactions. OBJECTIVES: The primary aim of this study was to determine the frequency and characteristics of asthmatic reactions triggered by alcoholic drinks in a community-based cohort of asthmatic subjects. Investigations of other food sensitivities were also completed to explore some of the possible components of alcoholic drinks that may be responsible for these asthmatic responses. METHODS: A validated food all

[Pharmacological approach to the treatment of drinking problems].

Many pharmacological agents have been proposed for the treatment of drinking problems. However, there are many pitfalls in the assessment of the clinical interest of those drugs. In this paper, we propose a new classification of drugs of interest for treating alcohol abuse and related problems. We also review the major clinical studies about those pharmacological agents and discuss some peculiar aspects of those trials think to be important to develop better strategies for the evaluation of pharmacotherapy of alcoholism.
