High-risk cocktails and high-risk sex: examining the relation between alcohol mixed with energy drink consumption, sexual behavior, and drug use in college students.

Alcohol mixed with energy drink (AmED) consumption has garnered considerable attention in the literature in recent years. Drinking AmED beverages has been associated with a host of negative outcomes. The present study sought to examine associations between AmED consumption and high-risk sexual behaviors in a sample of young adults. Participants (N=704; 59.9% female) completed an online survey assessing AmED consumption, other drug use, and sexual behavior. A total of 19.4% of the entire sample (and 28.8% of those who reported using alcohol) reported consuming AmED. Participants who reported co

Associations between domain-specific physical activity, sedentary behavior, and binge drinking among adults in the United States and China: evidence from a cross-sectional study, daily tracking, and randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking is linked to a range of diseases and has become a global public health concern. Engaging in physical activity may help reduce the prevalence of binge drinking and excessive alcohol consumption. However, the association may vary depending on the type of physical activity. This study aimed to investigate the association between different types of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and binge drinking. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included: (1) a cross-sectional survey included 6,707 individuals aged 20 years and older from the NHANES database between 2015 and

Executive functioning-specific behavioral impairments in a rat model of human third trimester binge drinking implicate prefrontal-thalamo-hippocampal circuitry in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders.

Individuals diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) often display behavioral impairments in executive functioning (EF). Specifically, the domains of working memory, inhibition, and set shifting are frequently impacted by prenatal alcohol exposure. Coordination between prefrontal cortex and hippocampus appear to be essential for these domains of executive functioning. The current study uses a rodent model of human third-trimester binge drinking to identify the extent of persistent executive functioning deficits following developmental alcohol by using a behavioral battery of hipp

The effect among older persons of a general preventive visit on three health behaviors: smoking, excessive alcohol drinking, and sedentary lifestyle. The Medicare Preventive Services Research Team.

BACKGROUND: The U.S. Congress mandated evaluations, initiated in 1989, to determine whether extending Medicare benefits to include preventive services would improve health status, reduce costs of care, and improve health risk behaviors of beneficiaries. METHODS: The Johns Hopkins Medicare Preventive Services Demonstration was a randomized trial in which Medicare beneficiaries were assigned either to an intervention group that was offered yearly preventive visits for 2 years and optional counseling visits to their primary care provider or to a control group that received usual care. The enduring behavioral and neurobiological effects of a flavor cue paired with alcohol drinking during adolescence on the incentive properties of the flavor cue in adulthood in female alcohol-preferring (P) rats.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorders (AUDs) affect 15 million people nationwide, 4% of which are adolescents (ages 12-17) and adolescents who binge drink significantly increase their likelihood of suffering from an AUD in adulthood. Research shows that cues (i.e. flavors) paired with alcohol (EtOH) produce significant cue-induced alcohol craving and contribute to relapse in adolescent and adult populations. However, there is a lack of research focused on how cues that accompany EtOH drinking during adolescence, affect EtOH craving later in life. The current study sought to examine the sex- and de

Alcohol Intake and Binge Drinking and Their Association With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Emphysema, and Chronic Bronchitis: A Retrospective Study Using the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) Database.

Background and objective While alcohol intake and binge drinking have been associated with various types of cancers, their relationship with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) remains unclear. Understanding this association is crucial to identifying potential behavioral or biological factors influencing COPD, emphysema, or chronic bronchitis risk. This study aimed to evaluate the association between binge drinking and COPD, emphysema, or chronic bronchitis, and assess the odds of developing COPD in participants with binge drinking based on demographic and socioeconomic characteristic

Blood glucose level, alcohol heavy drinking, and alcohol craving during treatment for alcohol dependence: results from the Combined Pharmacotherapies and Behavioral Interventions for Alcohol Dependence (COMBINE) Study.

BACKGROUND: Heavy drinking may increase blood glucose levels. Moreover, in alcohol-dependent subjects, glucose may play a putative role in alcohol preference. METHODS: This study investigated the relationship between blood glucose levels and both alcohol heavy drinking and craving in alcohol-dependent subjects participating in the COMBINE Study. The primary objective was to evaluate the relationship between baseline (pretreatment) glucose levels and percentage of heavy drinking day (PHDD) during treatment. The secondary objective was to evaluate the relationship between glucose levels, baseli

Commentary on Day and colleagues : the association between prenatal alcohol exposure and behavior at 22 years of age--adverse effects of risky patterns of drinking among low to moderate alcohol-using pregnant women.

Day and colleagues have presented the first data showing that the behavioral effects of low to moderate prenatal alcohol exposure seen in childhood and adolescence persist into adulthood. Using the Achenbach Adult Self-Report, they found dose-dependent effects of prenatal exposure on internalizing, externalizing, and attention problems that persist in young adults and, thus, appear to be permanent. To date, few studies have attempted to identify thresholds at which prenatal alcohol exposure is harmful, although the animal literature suggests that even 1 to 2 binge episodes can result in advers

Home cage voluntary alcohol consumption increases binge drinking without affecting abstinence-related depressive-like behaviors or operant responding in crossed high alcohol-preferring mice (cHAPs).

Chronic alcohol consumption can lead to tolerance and escalation of drinking in humans and animals, but mechanisms underlying these changes are not fully characterized. Preclinical models can delineate which mechanisms are involved. The chronic intermittent ethanol exposure (CIE) procedure uses forced exposure to vaporized alcohol that elicits withdrawal and increased responding for alcohol in operant tasks in C57BL/6J inbred mice. Chronic two-bottle choice (2BC) drinking in the same strain elicits abstinent-related depression-like behavior, suggestive of allostatic changes. Selected lines suc

Impact of the aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) gene testing on alcohol drinking behaviors among the Chinese Han population: study protocol of a single-center, open-label, randomized, controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption may induce multiple disorders, and decreased alcohol consumption has been proved to be effective to reduce the incidence of alcohol-associated diseases and mortality. Pharmacotherapy is the most common option for the management of alcohol problems; however, it suffers from multiple problems. Non-pharmaceutical interventions are therefore of urgent need to change alcohol intake among alcohol users. Aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2), which encodes the ALDH2 gene, is an important enzyme in ethanol metabolism. Previous studies have demonstrated that individuals harbo

Age at first alcoholic drink as predictor of current HIV sexual risk behaviors among a sample of injection drug users (IDUs) and non-IDUs who are sexual partners of IDUs, in St. Petersburg, Russia.

This study investigates whether age at first alcoholic drink is associated with sexual risk behaviors among injection drug users (IDUs) and non-IDUs who are sexual partners of IDUs in St. Petersburg, Russia. A path analysis was used to test a model of age at first drink, age at sexual debut, age at first drug use, current substance use patterns and current sexual risk behaviors among 558 participants. Results revealed that age at first drink had an effect on multiple sex partners through age at sexual debut and injection drug use, but no effect on unprotected sex. Age at first drug use was not

Exceeding Intended Intoxication Predicts Lower Drinking at the Next Event Through Reduced Intoxication Intentions.

OBJECTIVE: Social learning theory posits that direct experience shapes future cognition and behavior. Yet, it remains unclear how drinking experiences from one event influence intentions and behavior of the next drinking event. Exceeding intended levels of intoxication may motivate self-correction or adjustment of future intentions and behavior. However, this process may depend on positive or negative consequences experienced. Therefore, the current study examined whether exceeding intended intoxication and its associated consequences during a given drinking episode predicted intoxication inte

Neural circuits for stress-induced water drinking in relief of anxiety.

Drinking water is a rapid, instinctive behavior of mammals following stress. The role of such stress-induced water drinking behavior and its neural mechanisms remain poorly known. Here, we identify two sequentially activated neural circuits that respectively mediate stress-induced drinking behavior and reward encoding, which collectively promote the extinction of anxiety-like behaviors in mice. Specifically, mild short-term stress induces anxiety-like behaviors and activates glutamatergic neurons in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFCGlu) projecting to glutamatergic neurons in the median preopt

Societal spirits in the silver streak: Unraveling complexity in drinking habits of the mature adult population.

BACKGROUND: The complex interactions between an individual's drinking behavior and their social environment is crucial but understudied, particularly in mature adult populations. Our aim is to unravel these complexities by investigating how personal drinking patterns are related to those of one's social environment over time, and what the interplay is with personal factors such as occupational prestige and smoking behavior. METHOD: The present study adopts an innovative graphical autoregressive (GVAR) panel network modeling approach to investigate the dynamics between personal drinking habits

Cognitive and affective empathy in binge drinking during late adolescence.

Empathy-the ability to understand and share the feelings of others-has been identified as a potential correlate of binge drinking behaviors in adolescence. Our preregistered study aimed to investigate the relationship between cognitive and affective empathy and alcohol consumption in late adolescence. Building on prior research, we predicted a dissociation of cognitive and affective empathy related to alcohol consumption. Specifically, we hypothesized that whereas a negative association between affective empathy and alcohol consumption would emerge, no significant association would be observed

Stay Home, Drink at Home? A Daily Diary Study on College Students' Alcohol and Social Media Use during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 and measures to contain it may have impacted college students' behavior, including their drinking behavior. Students' drinking may have decreased-for example, due to the closure of bars-but problematic drinking may have increased-for example, due to (solitary) drinking at home. Another behavior that has increased due to COVID-19 and the accompanying social isolation is students' social networking site (SNS) use. This is worrisome because students' SNS use has been shown to increase their alcohol use. Nevertheless, little research has investigated these behaviors and the po

When the Good Outweighs the Bad: Day-Level Interactions Between Positive and Negative Alcohol Consequences and Their Impact on Next-Day Alcohol Cognitions.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consequences are among the most studied predictors of future drinking behavior, yet findings regarding the influence of negative consequences on subsequent alcohol use remain inconsistent. It is possible that the more frequent experience of positive consequences, which are more salient to drinking behavior, outweighs the impact of negative consequences. The current study examined how both domains of alcohol consequences and their co-occurrence influenced next-day evaluations of drinking episodes and subsequent drinking behavior among young adults. METHOD: Eighty-four young

Parental modeling and parenting behavior effects on offspring alcohol and cigarette use. A growth curve analysis.

PURPOSE: This paper examined the effects of parental drinking and smoking, parental warmth and hostility, and their interactions on offsprings' drinking and smoking over time. METHODS: We used four waves of prospective longitudinal data collected from 218 males and 214 females who were age 15 at Time 1 and age 28 by Time 4. Growth mixture modeling was used to develop offspring trajectory groups of cigarette smokers and alcohol drinkers. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine whether parent behaviors could predict offspring heavy drinking and smoking trajectories. RESULTS: F

Combined treatment for at-risk drinking and smoking cessation among Puerto Ricans: A randomized clinical trial.

Tobacco and alcohol use are linked behaviors that individually and synergistically increase the risk for negative health consequences. This study was a two-group, randomized clinical trial evaluating the efficacy of a behavioral intervention, "Motivation And Problem Solving Plus" (MAPS+), designed to concurrently address smoking cessation and the reduction of at-risk drinking. Targeted interventions may promote coaction, the likelihood that changing one behavior (smoking) increases the probability of changing another behavior (alcohol use). Effects of intracerebroventricular administration of aliphatic diamines on ingestive behavior in the rat.

We examined the pharmacological effects of intracerebroventricularly administered aliphatic diamines on ingestive behavior in male rats adapted to a 4 hr per day feeding and drinking schedule. 1,2-Ethanediamine (ETD), 1,3-propanediamine (PRD), 1,4-butanediamine (putrescine, PUT), 1,5-pentanediamine (cadaverine, CAD) and 1,6-hexanediamine (HED) suppressed feeding and drinking behavior in a dose-dependent manner, but not unless a relatively high dose (over 80 micrograms) was given. The approximate anorectic potency was HED greater than CAD divided by PUT greater than ETD greater than PRD. A seda
