Aspiration pneumonia is one of the most severe complications associated with near-drowning and is referred to as drowning-associated pneumonia (DAP). Inhaled water may be contaminated by various pathogens, thereby facilitating DAP development. The causative organisms of DAP differ from those of community-acquired pneumonia, with Gram-negative bacilli being predominant. We herein report an 83-year-old Japanese man with chronic kidney disease who presented to the emergency department after a near-drowning episode. His oxygen saturation level was 86% despite receiving oxygen via a 10 L/min reserv

INTRODUCTION: Drowning burdens in low- and middle-income contexts are underestimated, as current data collection systems gather inadequate data. We conducted one of the largest community-based surveys to date capturing fatal drowning data across age, gender and rurality, focusing on the state of West Bengal, India.
METHODS: A resource-efficient community knowledge approach was used to conduct an observational community-based survey where meetings were held with community residents and key informants to identify drowning deaths in the population. Identified deaths were verified at the victim's

Staphylococcal infection is as common as streptococcal infection as a cause of infection-related glomerulonephritis (IRGN). It is seen more frequently in the pediatric population and is relatively rare in adults. Glomerular disease manifests as either nephritic or nephrotic syndrome. A high index of suspicion is necessary for diagnosing this condition as it can be mistaken for other common conditions in the elderly. IRGN may present as volume overload and may masquerade as cardiorenal syndrome type 1 in patients with preexisting heart failure, emphasizing the importance of distinguishing betwe

Drowning is an overlooked public health concern and drowning risk is dependent on environmental risk factors. The preponderance of drowning deaths occurs in low- and middle-income countries. Small-scale fishers face high occupational risk of drowning. Climate change increases the frequency and intensity of storms, thereby exacerbating fishers' risks and creating a need to examine the contribution of storms to fisher drowning deaths for the development of mitigation strategies. We examined this relationship between weather and fisher drowning deaths in Lake Victoria, which is Africa's largest l

Paroxysmal autonomic instability syndrome with dystonia (PAISD) is a possible complication that worsens the prognosis of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy related to non-fatal drowning. There are case reports of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) therapy enhancing recovery in such cases. We report a case of a 5-year-old boy admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit after a non-fatal drowning. He was transferred under mechanical ventilation and sedation, with hemodynamic instability and hypothermia. On admission he had a Glasgow Coma Score of 6. On the fifth day of admission he presented episodes of dy

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Drowning is an important cause of childhood injury, however, little is known about drowning in Africa. The aim of this study is to investigate submersion incidents in Cape Town, South Africa and provide specific prognostic factors as well as to develop age-appropriate prevention strategies.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review performed at the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. Patients admitted because of 'drowning' or 'near-drowning' between January 2007 and April 2013 were included.
RESULTS: 75 children were included. 63 (84 %) survive

We report a case of Pseudomonas pseudomallei infection, in which the patient acquired the bacteria by aspiration of river water after a drowning incident near Manila, the Philippines. The pulmonary form of melioidosis was noted at the onset, but septicemia developed at a later stage. Positive blood cultures were obtained 17 days after the accident. The patient was treated successfully with a combination of amikacin and cephalothin. This is the first report of P. pseudomallei infection documented in Taiwan.

An analysis of a consecutive series of 66 swimming pool immersion accidents is presented; 74% of these occurred in in-ground swimming pools. The estimated accident rate per pool is five times greater for in-ground pools compared with above-ground pools, where pools are inadequately fenced. Backyard swimming pools account for 74% of pool acidents. Motel and caravan park pools account for 9% of childhood immersion accidents, but the survival rate (17%) is very low. Fifty per cent of pool accidents occur in the family's own backyard pool, and 13.6% in a neighbour's pool; in the latter the surviva

Report on successful post-drowning cardiopulmonary resuscitation of a 2-year-old boy who had lain for 20 min in cold water at 5-7 degrees C. Because of severe pulmonary complications after primary resuscitation--e.g. pulmonary edema, repeated mediastinal and subcutaneous emphysema, pneumoperitoneum and bilateral pneumothorax--spontaneous respiration remained insufficient for 36 days. Under appropriate treatment the patient recovered completely except for slight muscular hypotrophy of the left thigh. 14 months after the submersion no other neurological or pulmonary sequelae could be detected.

OBJECTIVE: Recently, the number of patients who fell or jumped from bridges over Han River has rapidly increased. However, the injury patterns and outcomes of these patients have been poorly characterized. The aim of this study was to determine the injury characteristics of these patients.
METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of all patients who were transferred to the Emergency Room due to jumping or falling from bridges over Han River between 2011 and 2015.
RESULTS: A total of 203 patients were included. Among them, 14 (6.9%) patients were dead on arrival, 51 (25.1%) patients were expi

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although drowning is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in young children, the neuropathologic consequences have not been fully determined. The purpose of this article was to quantitatively characterize white matter microstructural abnormalities in pediatric anoxic brain injury from nonfatal drowning and investigate the correlation with motor function.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Whole-brain T1-weighted and diffusion-weighted MR imaging datasets were acquired in 11 children with chronic anoxic brain injury and 11 age- and sex-matched neurotypical controls (4-12 year

Insects, spiders and plants risk drowning in their wetland habitats. The slow diffusion of O(2) can cause asphyxiation when underwater, as O(2) supply cannot meet respiratory demands. Some animals and plants have found a common solution to the major challenge: how to breathe underwater with respiratory systems evolved for use in air? Hydrophobic surfaces on their bodies possess gas films that act as a 'physical gill' to collect O(2) when underwater and thus sustain respiration. In aquatic insects, this feature/process has been termed 'plastron respiration'. Here, we demonstrate the similaritie

Overdistension of the lungs from high inspiratory pressure is increasingly recognized as a major contributor to lung injury and worsening respiratory failure in the child who requires prolonged mechanical ventilation. Many modes of ventilation (such as high-frequency ventilation) have been introduced in an attempt to decrease this lung injury. Recently, a new mode of tracheal ventilation, intratracheal pulmonary ventilation (ITPV), has been described. By using a catheter positioned at the carina with continuous gas flow, it is possible to achieve effective ventilation at very low pressures. Th

BACKGROUND: Although Bangladesh has achieved substantial progress in reducing mortality from infectious diseases, child drowning, particularly in the northern regions, remains a neglected public health concern and constitutes the leading cause of death among children aged 1-17 years in rural areas. Approximately 18,268 children (aged 0-17 years) die from drowning annually, equivalent to an average of 50 deaths per day.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify the socio-demographic characteristics of caregivers, the types of child supervision and reasons for its absence, water safety skills, tra

UNLABELLED: Drowning-associated pneumonia (DAP) is the most common infectious complication in drowning patients admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). We aim to describe the clinical features, emergency interventions, microbiological characteristics, and antibacterial treatment strategies for children who have drowned, ando analyze the correlation between these factors and their prognosis. This retrospective study enrolled 141 children admitted to the PICU following freshwater drowning between 2019 and 2024. The cohort was stratified by the occurrence of DAP, with comparisons co
