OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of task-oriented approach in treating patients with spastic dysarthria.
METHODS: A randomized control trial was undertaken in 44 inpatients diagnosed with spastic dysarthria at the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine in West China Hospital. All of the participants received basic medical therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and an articulation approach for speech therapy by a professional speech therapist over a one month period. A task-oriented approach was added to the speech therapy regime of the test group of participants by another prof

We report the case of a 62-year-old man with sensory ataxic neuropathy, dysarthria, and ophthalmoparesis (SANDO). He developed gait disturbance at 54 years of age, muscle weakness at 56 years, and difficulty hearing at 58 years. His brother had muscle weakness in both legs from age 20 years, and was diagnosed with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease because he had muscle weakness of the four extremities, decreased CMAP and SNAP amplitudes on peripheral nerve conduction tests, and loss of large myelinated fibers and onion-bulb formations on sural nerve biopsy. His brother died aged 46 years, but no acc

There is little published intervention outcome literature concerning dysarthria acquired from stroke. Single case studies have potential for more detailed specification and interpretation than is generally possible in larger studies so are informative for clinicians dealing with similar cases. Such research also contributes to planning of larger scale investigations. Behavioural intervention is described which was carried out between 7-9 months after stroke with a 69-year-old man with severe dysarthria. Pre-intervention stability between 5-7 months contrasted with post-intervention gains. Sign

This study investigated the relationship between measures of Long-Term Average Spectrum (LTAS) for speakers with Parkinson's disease (PD) and Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and scaled estimates of perceived speech severity. Perceived severity was operationally defined as listeners' overall impression of voice, resonance, articulatory precision, and prosody without regard to intelligibility. Healthy control talkers were also studied. Speakers were audio recorded while reading Harvard Sentences and the Grandfather Passage. Using TF32 (Milenkovic, 2005), the LTAS was computed for sentences. Coefficients

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: A broad spectrum of clinical disorders is produced by mutations in the DNA polymerase gamma mitochondrial (POLG) gene which are associated with altered mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) integrity. The majority of disorders characterized by multiple mtDNA deletions present with progressive external ophthalmoplegia, though this feature is not usually found in syndromes caused by mtDNA depletion. We report on a patient having the clinical triad of sensory ataxic neuropathy, dysarthria and ophthalmoplegia (SANDO), POLG mutations and reduced muscle mtDNA content.

Achieving transfer of treatment outside the clinic is a problem for almost all individuals with speech disorders but has been particularly difficult in the treatment of patients with Parkinsonism. Given this situation and the frequency of vocal intensity problems in this population, we developed a wearable biofeedback device that could provide a patient with information about speech intensity outside the clinic. Auditory-perceptual and acoustic analyses were performed on audiotaped samples of reading and spontaneous speech recorded in the clinic pre- and posttreatment and at 10- and 20-week fo

INTRODUCTION: Neurobrucellosis is a serious complication of brucellosis, a common zoonotic infection. Its clinical diagnosis is often challenging due to the wide spectrum of clinical manifestations and the limited sensitivity of conventional diagnostic tools, including neuroimaging and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis, which may be normal or non-diagnostic.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 17-year-old male was recently diagnosed with brucellosis and was on standard triple antibiotic therapy. He presented with worsening systemic symptoms and new dysarthria. Contrast-enhanced brain magnetic resonance ima

We described a case of a rare, but notable adverse effect of metronidazole therapy, where a 55-year-old chronic alcoholic patient developed dysarthria following a four-week course of the drug for the treatment of pyogenic liver abscesses. Dysarthria, characterized by slurred or unclear speech, is an uncommon complication of metronidazole, which is generally well-tolerated but has the potential to cause neurotoxic effects in some individuals, especially with prolonged use or high cumulative doses. In this case, the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) brain revealed T2/FLAIR hyperintensities involv

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the subthalamic nucleus (STN) function and deep brain stimulation (DBS) effects on single-unit activity (SUA) in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients with dysarthria.
METHODS: After presurgical speech analysis, we recorded STN neuronal activities while PD patients (n = 16) articulated Chinese Pinyin consonants. The Pinyin consonants were categorized by the manner and place of articulation for SUA cluster analysis. The cohort was then divided into normal articulation and dysarthria groups based on diadochokinetic (DDK) assessments. The STN SUA patterns, represe

BACKGROUND: Palatal augmentation prosthesis (PAP) and palatal lift prosthesis (PLP) have been used to improve dysphagia and dysarthria. However, to date, there are few reports on their combined use. We report a quantitative evaluation of the effectiveness of a flexible-palatal lift/augmentation combination prosthesis (fPL/ACP) based on videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) and speech intelligibility testing.

UNLABELLED: The most common acquired communication disorders are aphasia, dysarthria and apraxia of speech. Determining the factors associated with speech therapy time of adults with these disorders can further the understanding of the speech and language rehabilitation process within the public service and linked to the health education process.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the types of acquired neurological disorders of communication of patients treated during the first years of implementation of a medium complexity service, along with demographic data, and rehabilitation time; and to determine as

BACKGROUND: Hypokinetic dysarthria is highly prevalent in idiopathic Parkinson disease (PD), and effectiveness of high-intensity voice treatment is well established. However, the neural correlates remain largely unknown.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to specify cerebral pathophysiology of hypokinetic dysarthria and treatment-induced changes using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
METHODS: We used fMRI to investigate healthy controls (HCs) and patients with idiopathic PD-associated dysarthria before and after treatment according to the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment LOUD (LSVT). During fMRI,

BACKGROUND: A large number of people who experience a stroke are affected by dysarthria. This may be in isolation or in association with aphasia and/or dysphagia. Despite evidence highlighting the psychological and social impact of having post-stroke dysarthria and a number of clinical guidelines that make recommendations for appropriate management, little is known currently about UK service delivery issues relating to speech and language therapy (SLT) assessment and treatment for this group. Such evidence is necessary in order to plan, develop and research services for people with post-stroke
