Comparison between the SCOFF Questionnaire and the Eating Attitudes Test in patients with eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The SCOFF was developed as a simple, five-question screening tool for eating disorders to be used in primary care. The aim of this study was to examine the appropriateness of each question in comparison with the Eating Attitudes Test-26. METHODS: The SCOFF and the EAT-26 were administered to 80 patients with eating disorders who had received treatment from May through October 2003 in Japan. RESULTS: The scores of the SCOFF and those of the EAT-26 were positively correlated (P<0.001), and each question of the SCOFF was strongly associated with different items of the EAT-26. The det

The Minnesota Eating Behavior Survey: a brief measure of disordered eating attitudes and behaviors.

This article describes details of the development and psychometric characteristics of a brief self-report inventory for assessing attitudes and behaviors symptomatic of eating disorders that is currently in use in a longitudinal study of over 700 families with 11-year-old or 17-year-old twin girls. The Minnesota Eating Behavior Survey (MEBS), formerly the Minnesota Eating Disorder Inventory, is a 30-item measure developed for use with children as young as 10 years as well as adults. An examination of the MEBS's psychometric properties in a large, community sample of girls, women, and men demon

[Measuring the development of eating disorders in a group of patients with the Eating Disorders Inventory (EDI)].

The Eating Disorders Inventory (EDI I) has been applied to four groups of patients with Eating Disorders (ED): Anorexic Bulimic Subtype (AB N = 22), Anorexic Restrictive Subtype (AR N = 36); Bulimic (B N = 51) and Other Eating Disorders (OED N = 15), according to the DSM III-R criteria. We have also applied the Eating Attitude Test (EAT-40), the Beck Depression Inventory (13 items), the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. During their hospital care, the patients have been treated by cognitive-behavioural therapy. The order or decreasing total scores in EDI a

Correspondence between the Diabetes Eating Problems Survey-Revised and eating disorder diagnosis: Examining the current cut-off for clinically significant eating disorder symptoms.

AIMS: Eating disorders (EDs) are associated with severe health complications and early death in individuals with type 1 diabetes, making the accurate detection of EDs crucial so that treatment can be initiated. The Diabetes Eating Problems Survey-Revised (DEPS-R) is commonly used to identify individuals with type 1 diabetes with a probable ED, with scores ≥20 recommended as a clinical cut-off. However, the correspondence between a score ≥20 and an ED diagnosis has yet to be examined. This study examines the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of the DEPS-R ≥20 for detecting EDs in a sample

Incorporating food addiction into disordered eating: the disordered eating food addiction nutrition guide (DEFANG).

Although not formally recognized by the DSM-5, food addiction (FA) has been well described in the scientific literature. FA has emerged as a clinical entity that is recognized within the spectrum of disordered eating, particularly in patients with bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder and/or co-occurring addictive disorders and obesity. Integrating the concept of FA into the scope of disordered eating has been challenging for ED treatment professionals, since there is no well-accepted treatment model. The confusion surrounding the implications of FA, as well as the impact of the contemporary

Financial difficulty, disordered eating behaviors, and intuitive eating behaviors during pregnancy: A preliminary investigation.

Financial difficulty, a social driver of health, is associated with adverse maternal outcomes; however, its relation to perinatal eating behaviors is not well understood. The present study examined associations between financial difficulty and binge eating, purging, dietary restriction, and intuitive eating during pregnancy. Data were drawn from a secondary analysis of a cross-sectional, online study conducted between December 2022 and July 2023. Participants were a U.S. community sample of pregnant adults (N = 176; Mage = 29.24; 77.8% White). Approximately 35% of participants endorsed current

Bidirectional temporal relationships between emotional state and eating across eating disorders: a network approach.

OBJECTIVE: Several models of eating disorders (EDs) suggest that emotions and eating influence each other in a vicious cycle, producing part of the observed symptoms. However, no research tested whether such cycles exist across EDs. We therefore explored networks of prospective relationships between negative and positive emotions and eating-related behaviors (hunger, food craving, calorie intake, and binges) across EDs and healthy controls (HCs). METHOD: These variables were assessed six times a day for eight days in women with restrictive (AN-R, N = 29) and binge-purge (AN-BP, N = 26) Anorex

Eating Disorders: An Analysis of Self-Induced Vomiting, Binge Eating, and Oral Hygiene Behavior.

BACKGROUND: Self-induced vomiting (SIV) is often present in patients with eating disorders (ED) and potentially damaging for oral health. Related behaviors, such as binge eating and oral hygiene habits, may equally increase the risk for dental damage. This study aimed to investigate behaviors and habits in patients with ED and SIV in relation to oral health. METHODS: All patients enlisting for treatment in an ED clinic for 1 year were offered to take part in the study. Fifty-four of 65 patients were accepted to participate, and a questionnaire included questions on dietary and oral hygiene ha

Virtual Reality App for Treating Eating Behavior in Eating Disorders: Development and Usability Study.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa is one of the more severe eating disorders, which is characterized by reduced food intake, leading to emaciation and psychological maladjustment. Treatment outcomes are often discouraging, with most interventions displaying a recovery rate below 50%, a dropout rate from 20% to 50%, and a high risk of relapse. Patients with anorexia nervosa often display anxiety and aversive behaviors toward food. Virtual reality has been successful in treating vertigo, anxiety disorder, and posttraumatic stress syndrome, and could potentially be used as an aid in treating eating di
