Atrioventricular nodal re-entrant tachycardia in a patient with Ebstein anomaly.

The first case of successful slow pathway modulation is reported in a patient with Ebstein anomaly and recurrent atrioventricular nodal re-entrant tachycardia. Typical signals were recorded during electrophysiological study at the slow pathway region between the His bundle and the coronary sinus where ablation was performed successfully. Thus, slow pathway modulation seems to be a safe procedure even in selected patients with Ebstein anomaly.

The adult patient with Ebstein anomaly. Outcome in 72 unoperated patients.

Knowledge of the long-term outcome in unoperated adult patients with Ebstein anomaly is limited, and the therapeutic approach is still controversial. We studied unoperated adult patients with Ebstein anomaly to define the patterns of presentation, anatomic characteristics, outcome, and predictive factors for survival. Seventy-two unoperated survivors of Ebstein anomaly aged over 25 years attended from 1972 to 1997 were reviewed and followed-up from 1.6 to 22.0 years. Patients were classified in 3 groups of severity according to the echocardiographic appearance of the septal leaflet attachment

Ebstein's Anomaly in a Young Nigerian Lady.

BACKGROUND: Ebstein's anomaly (EA) is a rare congenital heart disease with a wide spectrum of presentation from the womb to adulthood characterized by apical displacement of tricuspid valve leaflets into the right ventricle. This is due to defects in embryological processes of uncertain etiology. CASE SUMMARY: A 28-year-old woman who presented with palpitations from childhood occurring in short paroxysms daily and limiting her from strenuous activities. Physical examination findings revealed a small stature with no associated birth defects. The cardiovascular system revealed tachycardia, a sm

Moyamoya Disease Complicating Ebstein's Anomaly.

Ebstein's anomaly is an uncommon congenital disorder affecting the tricuspid valve. We herein report a 38-year-old woman who experienced consciousness and sensory disturbance during treatment for heart failure caused by Ebstein's anomaly. Urgent magnetic resonance imaging and cerebral angiography demonstrated acute cerebral infarction and internal carotid artery obstruction with the development of collateral arteries. We diagnosed her with multiple cerebral infarctions due to moyamoya disease. Ebstein's anomaly concomitant with moyamoya disease is extremely rare. However, we should consider th

[Surgical Repair of Ebstein's Anomaly in the Adult].

Ebstein's anomaly (EA) is a rare congenital cardiac malformation and this anomaly is a disorder of a tricuspid valve development in which the valve leaflets fail to delaminate properly from the ventricular wall. Clinical symptoms are age dependent and include cyanosis (size of inter-atrial communication), right-sided heart failure, arrhythmias, and general fatigue on exercise. Optimal timing of surgical intervention is often difficult and must be individualized. Patients have good long-term survival and functional outcomes after undergoing surgery for Ebstein's anomaly in adult population. Ope

A "congenitally corrected" variant of Ebstein's anomaly.

Ebstein's anomaly is a rare CHD that is characterised by caudal displacement of the functional tricuspid annulus and a dysfunctional tricuspid valve owing to a failure of proper leaflet coaptation. We present a balanced variant of Ebstein's anomaly, in which the overgrowth of the septal leaflet had allowed proper coaptation of the tricuspid leaflets, thus preserving the valve function.

Perioperative and Anesthetic Considerations in Ebstein's Anomaly.

Ebstein's anomaly is a complex and heterogeneous form of congenital heart disease characterized by malformation and apical displacement of the tricuspid valve leaflets. Patients may present at any time from the neonatal period to adulthood with symptoms ranging from cardiac failure and cyanosis to paroxysmal arrhythmias. Depending on the timing of presentation, various surgical options are available for the management of symptomatic patients. This review will discuss the perioperative and anesthetic management of patients with Ebstein's anomaly with reference to the more common surgical approa

[Fetal diagnosis and prognosis of Ebstein's anomaly].

BACKGROUND: Currently fetal echocardiography may confirm the diagnosis in utero of Ebstein anomaly, as well as determine the perinatal outcome with high certainty. OBJECTIVE: To review 16 cases diagnosed with Ebstein anomaly, by fetal echocardiography, analyzing prognostic echocardiographic parameters set by Pavlova and colleagues. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A descriptive, observational, retrospective study was done in patients with fetal diagnosis of Ebstein anomaly, during January 2001 to December 2011. Echocardiographic parameters are analyzed and its correlation to perinatal evolution of 16 ca

Cone reconstruction of Ebstein's anomaly in a neonate.

Neonatal repair of Ebstein's anomaly is challenging and should be considered only if medical measures to stabilize the circulation and provide antegrade pulmonary blood flow fail. Anatomic repair, based on the cone reconstruction technique, has demonstrated promising survival benefits in older patients; however, there are no data regarding neonatal repair. This is a report on a successful salvage operation using cone reconstruction of Ebstein's anomaly in a neonate who had required extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support before surgery and who had failed to wean.

Modified repair in patients with Ebstein's anomaly.

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE STUDY: Since 1988, a modified repair technique has been used at the authors' institution to treat patients with Ebstein's anomaly. This technique restructures the valve mechanism at the level of the true tricuspid annulus by using the most mobile leaflet for valve closure, without plication of the atrialized chamber. A total of 19 patients had additional attachment of the anterior right ventricular wall to the interventricular septum (Sebening's stitch) and reconstruction of the tricuspid valve as a double-orifice valve. The long-term results of the study are presente

Ebstein's anomaly: a case with an unexpected evolution.

Ebstein's anomaly of the tricuspid valve is a rare and complex congenital heart defect. Its etiology is unknown and in the majority of cases it is multifactorial. Mortality in the neonatal period is high. The authors present a case of severe Ebstein's anomaly diagnosed antenatally. In the perinatal period a Blalock-Taussig shunt was performed and at the age of five months the infant underwent successful percutaneous pulmonary valvuloplasty. The clinical outcome has been favorable and we decided to postpone a Glenn procedure. At 18 months the child is asymptomatic.

[Factors predictive of mortality in Ebstein's anomaly].

Nearly 150 years after the description of Ebstein's anomaly the prognostic factors are not well known. Besides the foetal and neonatal forms which carry a poor prognosis the adult forms are often well tolerated and pose the difficult problem of management. This was a retrospective study of 73 patients with this malformation followed up between 1967 and 2002 at the University Hospital of Bordeaux. There were 14 deaths (19%) half of which (7) occurred during the first 3 months of life. The factors predictive of mortality (p<0.05) were: age, associated malformations, Classes III-IV of the New Yor

Ebstein's anomaly and pregnancy: a case report.

Ebstein's anomaly, an uncommon malformation of the tricuspid valve, has an extremely variable natural history, depending on a wide spectrum of pathological features. We here described a case of a patient with Ebstein's anomaly who gave birth to 2 healthy unaffected full-term infants after two successful pregnancies; a third pregnancy miscarried at the 11th week. The anomaly was diagnosed during childhood, was not associated with other cardiac anomalies, cyanosis or preexcitation and the echocardiographic degree of severity was low (grade 1). All of these factors are considered predictors of a
