BACKGROUND: Evidence on psychological side effects (PSEs) of antipsychotic medication after remission from first-episode psychosis (FEP), and their momentary impact on daily life, is limited. This study examined how Dopamine-2 (D2) affinity and antipsychotic dosage relate to momentary PSEs.
METHODS: This ecological momentary assessment (EMA) study included baseline data from 56 participants in the ongoing Handling Antipsychotic Medication: Long-term Evaluation of Targeted Treatment (HAMLETT) trial. Momentary mental states indicative of reduced affect intensity, stability, and variability, as

BACKGROUND: Awake bruxism (AB) is characterised by repetitive jaw muscle activity during wakefulness and is influenced by various stressors. Objective To investigate the effect of national stress (war) on AB muscle behaviours in young adults, the study was planned as a repeated cross-sectional study.
METHODS: Two groups were compared: one during peaceful times (no-national stress group, NoNS; n = 106, 63% female, age 25.4 ± 2.9 years) and one during wartime (an acute national stress group, AcuteNS; n = 82, 77% female, age 28.3 ± 3.3 years). AB behaviours were assessed through a single-point s

Maladaptive exercise (MalE) includes excessive, compulsive, or compensatory exercise and is a common eating-disorder (ED) symptom associated with increased severity, slower rates-of-recovery, and faster rates-of-relapse. Affect-regulation theories posit that MalE functions to reduce high negative affect (NA), although support for the affect-regulation model is mixed. Previous studies have not integrated ecological momentary assessment (EMA) with accelerometry or examined the affect-regulation model in individuals with EDs who frequently engage in MalE. The objective of this study was to examin

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Using ecological momentary assessment (EMA), we undertook a natural experiment wherein kratom-product variability was a tool to assess kratom dose-response relationships based on product form and alkaloid level.
METHODS: Between July-November 2022, 357 US kratom consumers (56.6 % male, 90.2 % non-Hispanic white) completed 15 days of EMA; 348 participants submitted samples of the products used most often during EMA. These were assayed for ten alkaloids using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Self-reported kratom effects were modeled as a fun

INTRODUCTION: Fatigue is prevalent across a wide range of medical conditions and can be debilitating and distressing. It is likely that fatigue is experienced differently according to the underlying aetiology, but this is poorly understood. Digital health technologies present a promising approach to give new insights into fatigue. The aim of this study is to use digital health technologies, real-time self-reports and qualitative interview data to investigate how fatigue is experienced over time in participants with myeloma, long COVID, heart failure and in controls without problematic fatigue.

It has been suggested that mental habits may underpin a heightened disposition to engage in rumination in response to negative mood. The aim of the current study was to assess the role of habit in the dynamic interplay between affect and ruminative thinking in the flow of daily life experiences. Using mobile ecological momentary assessment, 97 participants recorded affect and rumination ten times daily over six days, after completing measures of trait ruminative brooding and habitual characteristics of negative thinking (e.g. automaticity, lack of conscious awareness, intent and control). Mome

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is characterized by cyclical mood changes resulting in clinically significant distress and functional impairment. Studies on momentary cognitive and affective states and their interplay during daily life over the menstrual cycle in affected women are still lacking. Using Ecological Momentary Assessment with electronic diaries, 61 women with current PMDD and 61 healthy control women reported their current mood, rumination, and self-acceptance eight times a day over two consecutive days per cycle phase (menstrual, follicular, ovulatory, and late luteal phas

OBJECTIVE: Adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN) often show increased levels of exercise and physical activity. Psychological models suggest that physical activity in AN might attenuate momentary negative affect. However, this has not been directly tested in adolescents with AN, and it remains unclear whether this is a distinct mechanism of physical activity in AN compared with healthy controls (HCs).
METHOD: In a 1-day ecological momentary assessment, 32 adolescent inpatients with AN and 30 HCs responded to hourly questions on momentary affect while wearing an actigraph to objectively asses

Pregnant women with substance use disorder (SUD) comprise an underserved population with complex treatment needs, including complications from trauma histories and comorbid psychological disorders. Using ecological momentary assessment, we examined momentary fluctuations in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, prenatal bonding, and substance craving, among pregnant women in SUD treatment who had a history of trauma. We hypothesized that (a) PTSD symptoms and prenatal bonding would each be associated with substance craving and (b) PTSD symptoms would be negatively associated with pren

OBJECTIVE: To what extent menopause is related to symptom burden in women living with HIV (WLWH) is unclear, as a specific reproductive health analysis has seldom been undertaken, in part due to an inadequate assessment of reproductive status. The purpose of this study was to document and compare symptom frequency and attribution over 46 days and examine differences by reproductive status with a sample of 75 WLWH.
METHODS: We conducted an ecological momentary assessment using text messaging to follow 75 women confirmed for menopause stage with hormone profiles for 46 days. Participants were a

Regulation of emotions is necessary for successful attainment of short-term and long-term goals. However, over-regulation may also have its costs. In anorexia nervosa (AN), forgoing food intake despite emaciation and endocrine signals that promote eating is an example of "too much" self-control. Here we investigated whether voluntary emotion regulation in AN patients comes with associated disorder-relevant costs. Thirty-five patients with acute AN and thirty-five age-matched healthy controls (HCs) performed an established emotion regulation paradigm during functional magnetic resonance imaging

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorder (SUD) during pregnancy requires efficacious interventions based on understanding the ebb and flow of risk and protective factors for substance use across time. To assess how these fluctuations are associated temporally with substance use, we used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to evaluate substance use risk (posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD] symptoms) and protective (prenatal fetal bonding) factors and their associations with prenatal substance use recorded in real time.
METHODS: Pregnant women in SUD treatment (N = 33) with prior trauma exposure r

Despite the high levels of comorbidity between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and sleep disturbance, little research has examined the predictors of insomnia and nightmares in this population. The current study tested both PTSD-specific (i.e. PTSD symptoms, comorbid anxiety and depression, nightmares and fear of sleep) and insomnia-specific (i.e. dysfunctional beliefs about sleep, insomnia-related safety behaviours and daily stressors) predictors of sleep quality, efficiency and nightmares in a sample of 30 individuals with PTSD. Participants participated in ecological momentary assessme

BACKGROUND: Black college students experience elevated minority stress, particularly racial discrimination, which has been linked to greater alcohol use and related harms. Yet, research on this disparity overwhelmingly relies on cross-sectional or retrospective designs that fail to capture the dynamic nature of racial discrimination and its real-time influence on alcohol use risk. This study used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to examine daily associations between racial discrimination and alcohol use in this population.
METHODS: Black undergraduate and graduate students (N = 97;76% wo

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Smartphone-based Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) is increasingly used to collect real-time data on physical activity behavior. However, no activity-triggered EMA studies have been conducted among low-income older adults. We aim to assess the feasibility and acceptability of activity-triggered EMA in low-income older adults.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Researchers partnered with community organizations and provided technical support to facilitate the recruitment and retention of low-income older adults. For 7 days, 39 older adults (76.4 ± 8.5 years; 76% earnin

BACKGROUND: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) may function not only as an assessment method but possibly also an intervention strategy by increasing self-monitoring and awareness of drinking behavior. Personalized feedback (PF) integrated with EMA may further facilitate cognitive and behavioral change. This study compared the effects of EMA alone and EMA combined with PF (EMA + PF) on hazardous drinking (as assessed by the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test- Consumption tool), drinking motives, and alcohol expectancies among college students.
METHODS: Participants completed a Year

Stress beliefs-general expectations about the nature and consequences of stress-have been linked to health and performance, yet their role in shaping responses to everyday stress remains less understood. This study examined whether stress beliefs moderate affective reactivity and stress regulation strategies in response to naturally occurring stressors in daily life. In a 7-day ecological momentary assessment study, 104 university students completed thrice-daily reports (1,939 observations) on social and work-related stressors, positive and negative affect, and two stress regulation strategies

Self-reflection is central to adaptive stress regulation, yet little is known about when immersed versus distanced reflection optimises learning from stressful events. Drawing on Perceptual Control Theory, we propose that matching reflective stance to the emotional salience of stressors-adopting immersion for mild events and distancing for highly significant ones-optimises control-system reorganisation. This triple-blind, parallel-group randomised controlled trial will compare event-informed reflection against fixed self-immersed and self-distanced conditions using ecological momentary assessm

Urban environmental health studies often use static residence-based exposures, overlooking how mobility, cumulative exposure, and activity-travel contexts shape environmental perceptions, behavior and mental health. We examined the temporal- and context-specific associations among PM2.5, eye-level greenspace, physical activity, environmental perceptions, and perceived stress in Hong Kong. A two-day geographic ecological momentary assessment (GEMA) of 800 adults integrated 1.7 million PM2.5 measurements, 2.1 million accelerometer records, 4,800 GEMA assessments, and eye-level greenspace from 4.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for binge eating disorder (BED) is fairly effective, yet relapse remains problematic. Treatment outcomes may be improved if patients gain more insight into symptom patterns. In this qualitative study embedded in BED treatment, we evaluated user experiences with an Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) smartphone application to self-monitor affect and binge eating episodes in daily life.
METHODS: Participants were 20 adults who received group-CBT for BED at a mental health institute in the Netherlands. Via an EMA smartphone app, the participants fil
