Cost-effectiveness of population-based expanded reproductive carrier screening for genetic diseases in Australia: a microsimulation analysis.

Using the Australian Census survey 2021 as base population, a microsimulation model, PreconMOD was developed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of population-based expanded reproductive carrier screening (RCS) for 569 recessive conditions from the health service and societal perspectives. The model simulated the effect of expanded RCS including the downstream interventions for at-risk couples on cost and outcomes. The comparators were (i) no population screening (ii) limited screening for cystic fibrosis, spinal muscular atrophy, and fragile X syndrome and (iii) a 300 conditions screening pane

[Sickle cell disease: exotic disease or a Belgian public health problem?].

Sickle cell disease is a genetic disorder involving the haemoglobin designated as haemoglobin S, an autosomic recessive hereditary disease. It is the most frequent hereditary disease in sub-Saharan Africa, however epidemiological studies performed with a systematic neonatal screening in Brussels and Liège have proven that more than one neonate over 2.000 has a sickle cell disease. If this amount is significant, at the level of each physician the number of patient-contacts will be weak. Another aspect of the disease is the variability in its expression: some patients suffer from multiple and ch

Detection of Arachnomelia Syndrome in Simmental Cattle in Türkiye.

Hereditary diseases in cattle lead to economic losses across various breeds worldwide, with arachnomelia syndrome being one such disorder found in Simmental cattle. Arachnomelia results from a recessively inherited loss-of-function variant in the MOCS1 gene detected only in Simmentals. In Türkiye, prior research on hereditary cattle diseases has focused exclusively on dairy breeds, particularly Holstein. This study marks the first investigation in Türkiye of a genetic disease in a dual-purpose breed that is also valued for its beef traits. For this purpose, blood samples were collected from 38

Childbearing differences among three generations of U.S. women.

Each year a generation of women is born who will share similar sociohistorical experiences before and throughout their reproductive lives. These unique experiences can produce similar childbearing patterns in terms of the average number of children ever born--whether mothers are younger or older when their first birth occurs and the proportion of women who do not have children--that can differ from the patterns found for other cohorts. Childbearing patterns have profound consequences for society. These consequences include the demand for schools and housing, as well as women's participation in

Cognitive Disparities: The Impact of the Great Depression and Cumulative Inequality on Later-Life Cognitive Function.

Population aging has driven a spate of recent research on later-life cognitive function. Greater longevity increases the lifetime risk of memory diseases that compromise the cognitive abilities vital to well-being. Alzheimer's disease, thought to be the most common underlying pathology for elders' cognitive dysfunction (Willis and Hakim 2013), is already the sixth leading cause of death in the United States (Alzheimer's Association 2016). Understanding social determinants of pathological cognitive decline is key to crafting interventions, but evidence is inconclusive for how social factors int

"Big Events" and HIV Transmission Dynamics: Estimating Time Since HIV Infection from Deep Sequencing Data Among Sex Workers and Their Clients in Dnipro, Ukraine.

BACKGROUND: Major geopolitical events and structural shocks are thought to play a significant role in shaping HIV epidemics by influencing individual behaviours, reshaping social networks, and impacting HIV prevention and treatment programs. Here, we describe individual-level measures of estimated time since HIV infection (ETI) from viral next-generation sequencing data among female sex workers and their clients in relation to significant geopolitical events in Ukraine. METHODS: The Dynamics Study is a cross-sectional integrated biological and behavioural survey conducted among female sex wor

Wound models for periodontal and bone regeneration: the role of biologic research.

The ultimate goals of periodontal therapy remain the complete regeneration of those periodontal tissues lost to the destructive inflammatory-immune response, or to trauma, with tissues that possess the same structure and function, and the re-establishment of a sustainable health-promoting biofilm from one characterized by dysbiosis. This volume of Periodontology 2000 discusses the multiple facets of a transition from therapeutic empiricism during the late 1960s, toward regenerative therapies, which is founded on a clearer understanding of the biophysiology of normal structure and function. Oral Microbe Community and Pyramid Scene Parsing Network-based Periodontitis Risk Prediction.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis (PD) is a common chronic inflammatory disease affecting the gums and supporting tooth structures. It is often diagnosed only after significant irreversible tissue damage - such as gum recession and bone loss - has occurred, leading to tooth loss and systemic complications. Early detection of PD risk is therefore critical. This study integrates the Pyramid Scene Parsing Network (PSPNet), a deep learning model, with dental plaque microbial profiling data to generate a Periodontitis Risk Score (PRS) for identifying individuals at high risk of developing PD. METHODS: Mic

A longitudinal analysis of the relationship between housing insecurity and physical health among midlife and aging adults in the United States.

RATIONALE: A large body of work demonstrates the impact of housing instability on health by exploring the effects of evictions and homelessness on psychological wellbeing of young adults and children. However, limited research leverages national longitudinal data to examine whether and how experiences of a range of housing insecurity events, rather than just eviction or homelessness, affect physical health among midlife and older adults. OBJECTIVE: The current study examines (1) prevalence of housing insecurity among midlife and older adults by age and race, (2) linkages between housing insec

Computational Analysis of Targeting SARS-CoV-2, Viral Entry Proteins ACE2 and TMPRSS2, and Interferon Genes by Host MicroRNAs.

Rapid spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus responsible for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has led to a global pandemic, failures of local health care systems, and global economic recession. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have recently emerged as important regulators of viral pathogenesis, particularly among RNA viruses, but the impact of host miRNAs on SARS-CoV-2 infectivity remains unknown. In this study, we utilize the combination of powerful bioinformatic prediction algorithms and miRNA profiling to predict endogenous host miRNAs that may play importan

A systematic review of economic evaluations of orphan medicines for the management of spinal muscular atrophy.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a rare inherited autosomal recessive progressive disease of a varying phenotype, with varying clinical symptoms, and as a result the patients suffering from it require multiple types of care. It was deemed useful to conduct a systematic literature review on the pharmacoeconomic evaluations of all currently registered disease-modifying therapies in order to inform policy and highlight research gaps. Pharmacoeconomic analyses written in English and published after 2016 were considered for inclusion. PubMed/Medline, Global Health and Embase were systematically and

Type IV choledochal cyst with polycystic kidney disease: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Choledochal cysts are divided into 5 types. Physicians believe that Caroli disease (which refers to type V biliary cysts) is a special type of biliary cyst caused by a mutation in the PKHD1 gene and is associated with autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD). There is currently no clear association between other types of choledochal cysts and polycystic kidney disease. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 65-year-old male patient with jaundice, decreased appetite, and itchy skin. His biochemistry test results indicated obstructive jaundice disease. Synthetic 9-cis-beta-carotene inhibits photoreceptor degeneration in cultures of eye cups from rpe65rd12 mouse model of retinoid cycle defect.

The retinoid cycle enzymes regenerate the visual chromophore 11-cis retinal to enable vision. Mutations in the genes encoding the proteins of the retinoid cycle are the leading cause for recessively inherited retinal dystrophies such as retinitis pigmentosa, Leber congenital amaurosis, congenital cone-rod dystrophy and fundus albipunctatus. Currently there is no treatment for these blinding diseases. In previous studies we demonstrated that oral treatment with the 9-cis-β-carotene rich Dunaliella Bardawil algae powder significantly improved visual and retinal functions in patients with retinit

Psychological impact of COVID-19 on emergency department healthcare workers in a tertiary care center during a national economic crisis.

BACKGROUND: Since the declaration of the novel Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) as a global pandemic by the World Health Organization, frontline healthcare workers (HCWs) and staff in the Emergency Departments (ED) started experiencing feelings of anxiety and fear from the projected exponential spread and the potential burden on the healthcare system and infrastructure. In Lebanon, major local factors contributing to this fear were the rapid escalation of COVID-19 cases across the country, the lack of preparedness, and the shortage of personal protective equipment, in addition to the evolving e
