BACKGROUND: Involutional lower eyelid malpositions, including ectropion and entropion, are common age-related conditions resulting from horizontal eyelid laxity, imbalance between the anterior and posterior lamellae, and orbicularis oculi muscle dysfunction. Although numerous surgical techniques have been described, no single approach has proven universally superior. The association of unilateral primary developmental glaucoma with iridotrabecular dysgenesis and congenital ectropion uveae has been well documented in the literature. The glaucoma in this entity may present at birth, infancy or may develop at a later stage in life. I report the case of a child with late-onset unilateral primary developmental glaucoma due to iridotrabecular dysgenesis, congenital ectropion uveae, and who had a previously undescribed association with ipsilateral thickened corneal nerves in the stroma.

This report presents a Libyan child with congenital ichthyosis of the recessive lamellar variety complicated by severe ectropion of both upper and lower eyelids. Over a period of 12 months the degree of ectropion diminished and the anterior segments of the eyes were preserved using regular lubricating drops, vitamin A ointment and intermittent topical antibiotic therapy. Despite the pronounced initial upper eyelid ectropion no surgery was required to relieve the ectropion or prevent corneal exposure.

The transconjunctival approach to the orbit is underutilized because of concern regarding inadequate exposure and higher postoperative rates of lower eyelid shortening and ectropion. This study reports a case of Blastomyces dermatitidis soft tissue infection resulting in a disfiguring lower eyelid ectropion from cicatricial and postinflammatory cutaneous changes. The present study analyses the precorneal teat film using schirmer's test and tear film breakup time (BKUT) in 400 eyes of patients with various types of leprosy. An abnormal tear film BKUT (47.2%) was observed to be much more informative in the present series than the study of schirmer's test alone (25.4%). In patients with lagophthalmos an abnormal tear film BKUT (70%) was higher as compared to an abnormal schirmer's test (40%); while in cases of lagophthalmos with ectropion an abnormal schirmer's test was seen less frequently (26.8%) than in cases of lagophthalmos without ectropion (58.3%).

PURPOSE: Adults with facial nerve paresis (FNP) generally develop ectropion, but a recent report of children with syndromatic FNPs implies that entropion may be more common in this setting than ectropion.
