Evaluation of Bioactive Compounds and Antioxidant Activity in 51 Minor Tropical Fruits of Ecuador.

Less common tropical fruits have been the subject of little research, leaving a vast field to be explored. In this context, a comprehensive study was carried out on the bioactive compounds and antioxidant capacity of 51 non-traditional fruits consumed in Ecuador. Vitamin C, organic acids, carotenoids, and phenolic compounds were evaluated using microextraction and rapid resolution liquid chromatography (RRLC) techniques, while antioxidant activity was measured using microplate readings. The results showed high levels of vitamin C (768.2 mg/100 g DW) in Dovyalis hebecarpa, total organic acids (

Prevalence of chronic pelvic pain and primary dysmenorrhea in women of reproductive age in Ecuador.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) and primary dysmenorrhoea are debilitating conditions that can impair the quality of life of affected women. These conditions are frequently neglected, delaying proper diagnosis and healthcare provision. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of CPP and primary dysmenorrhoea in Ecuador and identify potential variables associated with their occurrence. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey in an urban neighbourhood of Quito, the capital of Ecuador. A total of 2397 participants of 14-49 years of age were included. The data were collected throu

Assessment of the Current Surveillance System for Human Leptospirosis in Ecuador by Decision Analytic Modeling.

Leptospirosis is a globally disseminated zoonotic disease with no national surveillance systems. On the other hand, surveillance is crucial for improving population health, and surveillance systems produce data that motivates action. Unfortunately, like many other countries, Ecuador put in place a monitoring system that has never been tested. The goal of this study was to use scenario tree modeling to assess the sensitivity of Ecuador's current national surveillance system to human leptospirosis as the basis for an economic assessment of the system. We created a decision-tree model to analyze

A population-based study of preeclampsia and eclampsia in Ecuador: ethnic, geographical and altitudes differences.

BACKGROUND: In Ecuador eclampsia and preeclampsia were identified as the third cause of maternal death. Like other Latin-American countries, Ecuador has human settlements living from 0 to more than 4000 m of altitude and comprising a wide ethnic-diversity across all these altitude changes. These characteristics offer the possibility to study a wide variety of possible risk factors for preeclampsia and eclampsia. METHODS: We conducted a population-based retrospective study of all deliveries in Ecuador from 2015 through 2017. The main variables analyzed were: altitude, ethnic self-identificatio

Spatiotemporal Analysis of Influenza Morbidity and Its Association with Climatic and Housing Conditions in Ecuador.

The external environment directly influences human health. However, what happens inside? This work deals with the effect that the interior thermal variables have on the propagation of respiratory diseases and focused on the relation of the temperature and relative humidity inside social housing in the 1040 parishes of Ecuador and the transmission of influenza. On the one hand, historical weather-related variables were used to simulate and estimate the interior conditions, and thresholds on temperature and humidity were determined. On the other hand, the health-related variable was determined b

Genetic response to an environmental pathogenic agent: HLA-DQ and onchocerciasis in northwestern Ecuador.

The aim of this study is to explore human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DQ variability in two populations (Cayapas Amerindians and Afro-Ecuadorians) who live near one another along the Cayapa River and who are exposed to the same environmental stresses, such as infection by Onchocerca volvulus. HLA-DQA1 and HLA-DQB1 of 149 unrelated individuals (74 Cayapas and 75 Afro-Ecuadorians) have been analyzed. HLA high-resolution molecular typing was performed by sequence-based typing, sequence-specific oligonucleotides hybridization and sequence-specific primer (SSP) amplification. Impact of long-term treatment of onchocerciasis with ivermectin in Ecuador: potential for elimination of infection.

BACKGROUND: Onchocerciasis is a leading cause of blindness worldwide, hence elimination of the infection is an important health priority. Community-based treatment programs with ivermectin form the basis of control programs for the disease in Latin America. The long-term administration of ivermectin could eliminate Onchocerca volvulus infection from endemic areas in Latin America. METHODS: A strategy of annual to twice-annual treatments with ivermectin has been used for onchocerciasis in endemic communities in Ecuador for up to 14 years. The impact of ivermectin treatment on ocular morbidity,

Genetic and other diseases in the pottery of Tumaco-La Tolita culture in Colombia-Ecuador.

The people of Tumaco-La Tolita culture inhabited the borders of present-day Colombia and Ecuador. Already extinct by the time of the Spaniards arrival, they left a huge collection of pottery artifacts depicting everyday life; among these, disease representations were frequently crafted. In this article, we present the results of the personal examination of the largest collections of Tumaco-La Tolita pottery in Colombia and Ecuador; cases of Down syndrome, achondroplasia, mucopolysaccharidosis I H, mucopolysaccharidosis IV, a tumor of the face and a benign tumor in an old woman were found. Women's perspectives on medical abortion in Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru: a qualitative study.

In Latin America, where abortion is almost universally legally restricted, medical abortion, especially with misoprostol alone, is increasingly being used, often with the tablets obtained from a pharmacy. We carried out in-depth interviews with 49 women who had had a medical abortion under clinical supervision in rural and urban settings in Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, who were recruited through clinicians providing abortions. The women often chose medical abortion to avoid a surgical abortion; they thought medical abortion was less painful, easier or simpler, safer or less risky. They

Prevalence of erectile dysfunction in Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela: a population-based study (DENSA).

The purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of erectile dysfunction (ED) in Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela. A 49-item questionnaire was completed by 1946 men aged 40 years and older. The age-adjusted combined prevalence of minimal, moderate, and complete ED for all three countries was 53.4%, with 19.8% of all men reporting moderate to complete ED. Age was the variable most strongly linked to ED; the prevalence of complete ED increased markedly in men older than 79 y of age (31.9%) and 70-79 y (17.2%) compared with men aged 40-49 y (<3%). Several medical conditions, such as hyper

Ocular linguatuliasis in Ecuador: case report and morphometric study of the larva of Linguatula serrata.

Linguatula serrata is a pentastomid, a cosmopolitan parasite belonging to the Phylum Pentastomida. Humans may act as an intermediate or accidental definitive host of this parasite, manifesting the nasopharyngeal or visceral form, with the latter having been described more frequently. The occurrence of ocular linguatuliasis is extremely rare, but it has been reported in the United States and Israel. The objective of the present paper was to report the first case of ocular linguatuliasis in Ecuador and to extend the morphologic study of L. serrata by morphometric analysis. The patient studied wa

The effect of antimalarial chloroquine therapy and prophylaxis on concurrent infection with Onchocerca volvulus in Ecuador.

The effect of chloroquine phosphate on Onchocerca volvulus in vivo was studied in Ecuadorians undergoing treatment for malaria. All persons with a diagnosis of acute malaria and treated with 2500 mg of chloroquine over 3 d showed a 100% reduction of dermal O. volvulus microfilariae 7 d after treatment. However, 28 d after treatment the microfilarial densities returned to their pre-treatment levels and at 35 d they had increased to 121.6% of their pre-treatment values. Treatment did not appear to have any effect on the adult O. volvulus examined histologically in extirpated nodules. Patients tr

Onchodermatitis--correlation between skin disease and parasitic load in an endemic focus in Ecuador.

Onchocerciasis is a chronic parasitic infection in which infiltration of the skin by microfilariae has been associated with a number of different pathological changes. This survey compared the prevalence of different forms of skin disease in two villages, one of which was located within the endemic zone for onchocerciasis (Zapallo Grande), in a lowland rain forest area of western Ecuador. The commonest skin diseases in both villages were scabies, pyoderma and pityriasis versicolor. In addition changes closely correlated with the presence of microfilariae in skin snips were found in Zapallo Gra

Training of Anesthesiologists in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Case Study From Ecuador.

BACKGROUND: Low- and middle-income countries are currently experiencing a significant shortage of physicians trained in anesthesia. This shortage has been widely attributed to multifactorial causes, including limited local training capacity, workforce migration, underfunded health education systems, and poor national workforce planning. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the state of postgraduate anesthesia training in Ecuador focusing on the structure of current programs and the competencies of their senior residents. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in two-phases.

Cohort evaluation of an all-oral shorter regimen for drug-resistant tuberculosis in Ecuador.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains the leading cause of death from infectious agents globally and disproportionately affects people living with HIV. In 2023, 10.6 million TB cases were reported worldwide, including 8,200 in Ecuador. Between 2020 and 2023, TB incidence in Ecuador increased from 31.2 to 48.1 per 100,000 population, alongside rising rifampicin- and fluoroquinolone-resistant TB cases. Treatment success declined from 76.2% in 2019 to 69.2% in 2021, highlighting the need for more effective and patient-centered treatment strategies. This study evaluated the effectiveness, safety,

A first insight into the diversity of pathogenic Leptospira serogroups in human cases from Ecuador.

With an estimated global incidence of nearly one million cases and nearly 60,000 associated deaths annually, leptospirosis is recognized as one of the most widespread zoonotic diseases worldwide. In Latin America, leptospirosis remains endemic and neglected, with recurrent outbreaks linked to climatic variability, flooding, and close human-animal-environment interactions. In this region, Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador account for nearly 80% of leptospirosis reported cases. Despite advances in molecular diagnostics and species-level identification, serogroups remain central to leptospirosi
