This study examines the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus (DNLL) and its afferent and efferent connections. In Nissl-stained material, DNLL has three parts: dorsal, ventral, and lateral. Although each part contains neurons with similar Nissl patterns, the subdivisions may be distinguished by the size, shape, and orientation of the cells. The lateral DNLL contains a mixture of DNLL neurons and cells from the sagulum. Afferent connections to DNLL were investigated with anterograde axonal transport techniques. Bilateral inputs to DNLL arise from the anteroventral cochlear nucleus and latera

The efferent ductules are male reproductive tubules that support fertility by reabsorbing fluid and transporting sperm from testis to the epididymis. They are lined with multiciliated cells (MCCs) and reabsorptive primary ciliated cells (RPCCs). While motile cilia drive fluid flow, the contribution of primary cilia and their interaction with motile cilia remain unclear. To address this, we generated a conditional Ift88 knockout (cKO) to disrupt both primary and motile cilia in the efferent ductule epithelium. Loss of IFT88 caused shortened cilia, epithelial disorganization, and impaired fluid

Located in the midline anterior wall of the third cerebral ventricle (i.e. the lamina terminalis), the median preoptic nucleus (MnPO) receives a unique set of afferent neural inputs from fore-, mid- and hindbrain. These afferent connections enable it to receive neural signals related to several important aspects of homeostasis. Included in these afferent projections are (i) neural inputs from two adjacent circumventricular organs, the subfornical organ and organum vasculosum laminae terminalis, that respond to hypertonicity, circulating angiotensin II or other humoural factors, (ii) signals fr

Primary cultured rat efferent ductal epithelia and cauda epididymal epithelial were mounted in Ussing chambers to study the effect of arginine vasopressin (AVP) on chloride secretion in the male excurrent duct. The regional differences in the signal transduction pathways involved were also investigated. In both the efferent duct and the cauda epididymidis, basolateral addition of AVP resulted in a dose-dependent increase in the short-circuit current (Isc), which was mediated via V1 receptor. Replacement of ambient Cl- with gluconate or pretreatment of a Cl- channel blocker, diphenylamine-2-car

The presence of two separate afferent channels from the olfactory glomeruli to different targets in the brain is unravelled in the lamprey. The mitral-like cells send axonal projections directly to the piriform cortex in the ventral part of pallium, whereas the smaller tufted-like cells project separately and exclusively to a relay nucleus called the dorsomedial telencephalic nucleus (dmtn). This nucleus, located at the interface between the olfactory bulb and pallium, in turn projects to a circumscribed area in the anteromedial, ventral part of pallium. The tufted-like cells are activated wit

The ability of the adult mammalian brain to compensate for neuronal loss caused by injury or disease is very limited. Transplantation aims to replace lost neurons, but the extent to which new neurons can integrate into existing circuits is unknown. Here, using chronic in vivo two-photon imaging, we show that embryonic neurons transplanted into the visual cortex of adult mice mature into bona fide pyramidal cells with selective pruning of basal dendrites, achieving adult-like densities of dendritic spines and axonal boutons within 4-8 weeks. Monosynaptic tracing experiments reveal that grafted

We have investigated olfactory bulb connections in the goldfish by using both horseradish peroxidase applied to olfactory tract lesions and wheat germ agglutinin-conjugated peroxidase administered to the olfactory bulb. The projections from the bulb pass to the brain in two major bundles: the lateral and the medial olfactory tracts. The lateral tract innervates the posterior terminal field in the area dorsalis. The medial tract divides into two rami. The dorsolateral ramus is the most substantial olfactory bundle in the brain and innervates several targets in both the area dorsalis and the are

BACKGROUND: Paraneoplastic syndromes that affect the visual pathways and present with neuro-ophthalmologic signs or symptoms may involve the afferent or efferent systems. Afferent syndromes may involve the optic nerve or retina and, in some cases, these may be associated with systemic neurologic disease. Efferent symptoms typically affect eye movements and may involve the neuromuscular junction or involuntary eye movements.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: Literature review and personal clinical and research experience.
RESULTS: Diagnosis of paraneoplastic syndromes relies on clinical and laboratory ev

Previous physiological and psychophysical studies have explored whether feedback to the cochlea from the efferent system influences forward masking. The present work proposes that the limited growth-of-masking (GOM) observed in auditory nerve (AN) fibers may have been misunderstood; namely, that this limitation may be due to the influence of anesthesia on the efferent system. Building on the premise that the unanesthetized AN may exhibit GOM similar to more central nuclei, the present computational modeling study demonstrates that feedback from the medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferents may cont

The effects of electrical stimulation of the femur, on blood pressure, were examined in anesthetized rats. Two small holes, 3-4 mm apart, were manually drilled into the femur down to the bone marrow. Following this, two stainless-steel electrodes were inserted into the holes, and an electrical square wave current was passed between the electrodes. In central nervous system-intact rats, electrical stimulation of the femur at 5 and 10 mA at 20 Hz for 20 s produced an intensity-dependent decrease in mean arterial blood pressure. This response was abolished by severance of the femoral and sciatic

The authors present a review of various techniques of long-term intubation of efferent lacrimal pathways by a silicone fibre. They use an original way of intubation and intubate the insertion probes of the intubation set from the lower nasal outlet by means of a titanium loop under direct optic control by means of an endoscope. The use of the endoscope makes it possible to reduce the number of complications and iatrogenic damage of the mucosa and it enhances the effectiveness of the procedure. The authors prefer the use of special intubations sets; for young children intubation sets made from

Sympathetic efferent pathways and alpha-adrenergic receptivity were investigated in one patient with spinal cord transection (D1 level) and orthostatic hypotension. The lack of increase in catecholamine plasma levels during orthostasis and the paradoxical pressor effect of clonidine (2 micrograms/kg orally) suggested complete interruption of efferent sympathetic pathways. The pressor response to exogenous noradrenaline was significantly higher in the patient than in 6 normal controls (0.09 vs 0.72 micrograms.kg-1), indicating supersensitivity of vascular alpha-adrenoceptors. The platelet alpha

We have recently shown that distension of the descending colon in anesthetized dogs causes reflex increases in heart rate, aortic blood pressure and the maximal rate of rise of left ventricular pressure, involving afferent pathways in the hypogastric nerves. In this study we have examined the efferent mechanisms involved in those responses. The descending colon was distended using Ringer solution at constant pressure in 13 anesthetized dogs. As previously shown, distension of the colon caused an increase in aortic blood pressure, heart rate and the maximal rate of rise of left ventricular pres

The neurohumoral pathways mediating intracisternal TRH-induced stimulation of gastric acid secretion were investigated. In urethane-anesthetized rats, with gastric and intrajugular cannulas, TRH or the analog [N-Val2]-TRH (1 microgram) injected intracisternally increased gastric acid output for 90 min. Serum gastrin levels were not elevated significantly. Under these conditions the TRH analog, unlike TRH, was devoid of thyrotropin-releasing activity as measured by serum TSH levels. In pylorus-ligated rats, gastrin values were not modified 2 h after peptide injection whereas gastric acid output

Estrogens play key roles in the development and maintenance of male reproductive function and fertility. In this review, we briefly describe the localization and function of estrogen receptors ESR1 and ESR2 (also known as ERα and ERβ, respectively) and the expression of G protein-coupled estrogen receptor-1 (GPER, formerly known as GPR30) in efferent ductules and epididymis. The efferent ductules present the highest levels of ESR1 and ESR2 in the male reproductive system, and represent a major target of estrogen action. In efferent ductules, ESR1 has a crucial role in the regulation of fluid r

Focal lesions of brainstem, thalamus, and subcortical white matter may cause movement disorders that are clinically indistinguishable from cerebellar symptoms. It is suspected that ataxia in these cases is due to damage of efferent or afferent pathways of the cerebellum. However, the precise anatomical correlate often remains undefined. We used deterministic diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DTI) tractography to study the anatomical relationship between lesions causing ataxia and efferent cerebellar pathways. Study subjects were six male patients with focal lesions of different etio

OBJECTIVE: To describe spinal reflex responses mediated by the upper lumbar spinal cord in humans and observed intraoperatively under general anesthesia.
METHODS: Thirty-one participants undergoing spinal surgery were enrolled. Reflex responses were recorded from the iliopsoas, adductor magnus, and rectus femoris muscles following electrical stimulation of the cutaneous territory innervated by the genitofemoral and ilioinguinal nerves using a multipulse train paradigm.
RESULTS: Reflex responses were obtained in the iliopsoas, adductor magnus, and rectus femoris muscles, with distinct recorda

Normal heart function depends on complex regulation by the brain, and abnormalities in the brain‒heart axis affect various diseases, such as myocardial infarction and anxiety disorders. However, systematic tracking of the brain regions associated with the input and output of the heart is lacking. In this study, we injected retrograde transsynaptic pseudorabies virus (PRV) and anterograde transsynaptic herpes simplex virus (HSV) into the left ventricular wall of mice to identify the whole-brain regions associated with the input to and output from the heart. We successfully detected PRV and HSV

While amputation has traditionally been viewed as a failure of therapy, recent developments in amputation surgery and neural interfacing demonstrate improved functionality and bidirectional communication with prosthetic devices. The agonist antagonist myoneural interface (AMI) is one such bi-directional neural communication model comprised of two muscles, an agonist and an antagonist, surgically connected in series within the amputated residuum such that contraction of one muscle stretches the other. By preserving agonist-antagonist muscle dynamics, the AMI allows proprioceptive signals from m

In 2002, the International Continence Society defined the term overactive bladder (OAB) as a symptom syndrome that is accompanied by urgency with or without urge incontinence, frequency and nocturia. A proven urinary tract infection or other obvious pathologies must be excluded. The pathophysiology of OAB has not been clarified in detail and is the subject of ongoing research, so partially overlapping hypotheses exist. The urothelium-based hypothesis suggests functional changes of urothelial receptors as well as functional changes regarding the sensitivity and coupling of the suburothelial myof
