BACKGROUND: Despite the technological advancements in myoelectric prostheses, body-powered prostheses remain a popular choice for amputees, in part due to the natural sensory advantage they provide. Research on haptic feedback in myoelectric prostheses has delivered mixed results. Furthermore, there is limited research comparing various haptic feedback modalities in myoelectric prostheses. In this paper, we present a comparison of the feedback intrinsically present in body-powered prostheses (joint-torque feedback) to a commonly proposed feedback modality for myoelectric prostheses (vibrotacti

BACKGROUND: We investigated the curative effects of using loose-fitting radial head prosthesis replacement to treat unstable comminuted fracture of radial head.
METHODS: From January 2010 to August 2012, radial head prosthesis replacement was used to treat eight cases of Mason's type III or IV radial head fractures. Three cases were in left side and 5 cases were in right side. Using the Mason criteria, 6 cases were classified as type III and 2 cases as type IV. All patients had fresh fractures. Operations were scheduled after swelling was subsided and we monitored all cases for 12 to 20 month

BACKGROUND: Revisions of total elbow arthroplasties (TEAs) are commonly performed because of prosthetic loosening. UK National Joint Registry data show that TEA revisions are becoming increasingly common, with 123 TEA revisions performed in 2018 and 76 performed in 2017. TEA radiologic assessment is based on subjective interpretation with no published criteria. We defined TEA loosening by the presence of at least one of the following criteria: (1) progressive widening of the bone-cement, bone-prosthesis, or cement-prosthesis interface; (2) fragmentation or fracture of cement; (3) prosthetic co

Reconstruction of the radial head can be complicated in cases of wide resection, particularly in those cases including the proximal radial shaft. In such cases, radial head replacement may not be possible because of lack of adequate bone stock. Here, we report the use of a radial head prosthesis incorporated with a vascularized fibula for immediate anatomic restoration of the forearm and elbow. We present a case of a pathologic fracture non-union in the proximal radius in a 57-year-old female with a history of multiple myeloma. Non-operative management of the fracture was unsuccessful after ch

BACKGROUND: Among upper limb injuries, carpal bone fractures and dislocation, Essex-Lopresti injury, and the terrible triad injury of the elbow are serious and relatively rare injuries. These injuries require surgical intervention. The surgical method is difficult, and the treatment effect is poor. These injuries have not been described in the same limb in the literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 21-year-old male patient fell from a height in our institution and sustained multiple injuries, including carpal bone fracture-dislocation, Essex-Lopresti injury, and the terrible triad injury of the elb

Ten patients underwent endoprosthetic replacement of the distal humerus for bone tumours over a period of 30 years. There were eight primary and two secondary tumours in four men and six women with a mean age of 47.5 years (15 to 76). The mean follow-up was eight years (9 months to 31 years). Four patients required further surgery, three having revision for aseptic loosening; two of these and one other later needing a rebushing. There were no cases of postoperative nerve palsy, infection, local recurrence or mechanical failure of the implant. Four patients died from their disease, all with the

Restoration of sensorimotor function after amputation has remained challenging because of the lack of human-machine interfaces that provide reliable control, feedback, and attachment. Here, we present the clinical implementation of a transradial neuromusculoskeletal prosthesis-a bionic hand connected directly to the user's nervous and skeletal systems. In one person with unilateral below-elbow amputation, titanium implants were placed intramedullary in the radius and ulna bones, and electromuscular constructs were created surgically by transferring the severed nerves to free muscle grafts. Due to the elbow joint's complex functional anatomy, the multifragmentary nature of many fractures and concomitant destabilizing associated injuries, dislocated fractures of the radial head and neck still present a serious challenge for the orthopedic surgeon. Thorough knowledge of the elbow's anatomy and biomechanics is essential to analyze and understand the injury and plan its treatment. The aim of a differentiated therapy approach is to restore the joint's anatomy and kinetics, stable and painless joint function, and to avoid or at least delay posttraumatic joint changes. The degree of dis

INTRODUCTION: Overlengthening of the radial column leads to insufficient functionality and increased capitellar wear. Methods to detect or prevent overlengthening have been described for monopolar prostheses. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether one such method described by Athwal et al. is also applicable for a bipolar prosthesis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The radial heads of six fresh frozen upper extremities were resected. A bipolar radial head prosthesis was implanted in each, and the effects of sequential overlengthening on the alignment of the radiocapitellar and ulnohumeral joint

BACKGROUND: Comminuted intra-articular distal humeral fractures represent a challenging upper extremity injury. This study reviews clinical and radiographic results in patients with distal humeral hemiarthroplasty (DHH).
METHODS: DHH with the Latitude prosthesis (Tornier, Saint-Ismier, France) was performed in 8 patients (mean age, 64 years; age range, 33-75 years) for unreconstructible fractures of the distal humerus or salvage of failed internal fixation. Clinical outcomes were assessed with the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons elbow instrument; Mayo Elbow Performance Index; and Disabil

BACKGROUND: The management of severe radiocapitellar joint pathologies in young patients is challenging. Radial head arthroplasty (RHA) is a treatment option in the adult population, but most surgeons avoid implementing it in younger patients, and there are no published results for patients younger than 16 years.
METHODS: Our retrospective cohort describes 5 patients (4 male 1 female) who underwent cementless modular RHA at an average age of 14 years (range: 13 to 15). The preoperative diagnoses were post-traumatic radiocapitellar incongruity and arthrosis because of previous Salter-Harris ty

BACKGROUND: Giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) (Campanacci III) or malignant tumors extend to the epiphyseal region of the proximal radius, and intra-articular resection of the proximal radius is often needed. In the present study, we present the patients who underwent reconstruction of the proximal radius with 3D-printed personalized prosthesis after tumor resection, aiming to describe the prosthesis design and surgical technique and evaluate the clinical outcomes of this method.
METHODS: Between November 2018 and January 2021, 9 patients received radial hemiarthroplasty with 3D-printed persona

BACKGROUND: Radiographic loosening is frequently seen around the radial head (RH) implant. The hypothesis of this study was that radiographic loosening will be more frequent in patients in which the RH prosthesis was implanted due to elbow trauma leading to instability that required lateral collateral ligament repair (LCL).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of the patients who had RH implantation between 2012 and 2019 was performed. Evaluation included evidence of radiographic loosening, stress shielding, formation of heterotopic ossification, and rate of removal of the implant. R

We compared the results of twenty-three consecutive capitellocondylar total elbow arthroplasties in twenty-three patients in whom an excision of the radial head and synovectomy for rheumatoid arthritis had failed with those of twenty-three non-consecutive primary capitellocondylar total elbow arthroplasties in twenty-three patients who had rheumatoid arthritis. The two groups were matched for age, gender, duration of follow-up, side of the operation, type of prosthesis, and operative approach. The average duration of follow-up was four years (range, two to fourteen years). At the most recent f

Upper-extremity amputation, particularly at or proximal to the elbow joint, is devastating. The complexities of upper-extremity function are challenging to replicate, even with modern prostheses. This leads to a relatively higher rate of prosthesis rejection in upper-extremity amputees as compared to lower-extremity amputees. However, the challenges of performing a functionally useful transhumeral amputation should dissuade even the least of us from seeking to optimize both residual limb and patient functional potential. A poorly done, or even standard, transhumeral amputation is destined to d

PURPOSE: Dislocations of components, loosening of the stem, overstuffing and removal in up to 24 % of common radial head prostheses (RHP) after implantation in complex elbow injuries signal the need for improvement. The latest biomechanical evidence shows advantages for monopolar designs. Clinical results after primary and secondary implantation of the newly designed press-fit monobloc monopolar RHP in cases of complex elbow injury are evaluated.
METHODS: Twenty-nine patients [median age 60 years (29-86)] were followed up retrospectively for a median of 25 months (7-54) post-operatively. Subj

BACKGROUND: Triceps weakness is a common complication of total elbow arthroplasty (TEA). Many posterior approaches for TEA have been introduced to maintain triceps function. The present study evaluated the clinical outcomes and extensor strengths of primary TEA with modified triceps fascial tongue approach.
METHODS: Twenty-one primary TEAs performed in 20 patients by a single surgeon were reviewed with a mean of 64.2 months (range, 24-127 months) of follow-up. Every TEA was performed using the modified triceps fascial tongue approach, with the Coonrad-Morrey prosthesis. Patient demographics,

Radial head fractures are common injuries in elbow trauma. Non-displaced fractures are best treated conservatively. Simple but displaced fractures require anatomic reduction and fixation, typically using screws. The treatment course for complex fractures with multiple fragments is still being debated, as results are less predictable. Radial head resection is not advised if concomitant injuries of the coronoid process or the collateral ligaments with instability are present. Favorable outcomes following open reduction and fixation using plates were reported recently. However, complication rates

The range of general and specific adverse event in total elbow arthroplasty is similar in principle and practice to all other revision prosthetic arthroplasty but with three particular challenges: loss of humeral and ulnar bone stock; insufficiency of the extensor 'mechanism'; and the management of the ulnar nerve. Total elbow replacement is presently performed for the management of complex non-reconstructable distal humeral fractures in osteoporotic bone, for post-traumatic arthropathy, and for medically managed inflammatory arthritides in which metaphyseal bone architecture is often preserve

Elbow replacement or arthroplasty is a good therapeutic option for a large percentage of patients with significant joint destruction. However, many orthopaedic surgeons are no familiar with the surgical approaches or techniques associated with elbow replacement implants. Furthermore, the incidence of complications is higher than in other joint replacements, the most important being infections, mechanical failure, cubital neuropathy, and problems with the triceps. For these reasons, the use of bone arthroplasty in Spain may be less than ideal. Although, inflammatory arthritic diseases, such as
