Electric-Field-Induced Solid-Gas Interfacial Chemical Reaction in Carbon Nanotube Ensembles: Route toward Ultra-sensitive Gas Detectors.

The electric field at the sharp pointed tips of single wall carbon nanotube ensembles has been utilized to kinetically accelerate hitherto unobserved chemical reactions at the heterogeneous solid-gas interfaces. The principle of ″action-of-points″ drives specific chemical reactions between the defect sites of single wall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and ppb levels of gaseous hydrogen sulfide. This is manifested as changes in the electrical conductivity of the conductive CNT-ensemble (cCNT) and visually tracked as enthalpic modulations at the site of the reaction through infrared thermometry. A single molecule diode based on gold electrodes and benzene molecule: conductivity and coupling analysis.

CONTEXT: In this paper, we simulate a single-molecule diode to calculate the effective coupling and investigate the conductivity, as well as the effect of the electric field on these two parameters. First, we obtain the molecule states and energies at 0 V. The next step is to calculate the electrode/molecule coupling using the obtained electrode and molecule Hamiltonian. The electrode/molecule coupling depends on distance. By increasing the distance from 5 to 5.5 angstroms, the coupling decreases from 0.004 to 0.0002 eV. After calculating the electrode/molecule coupling, which is the most sign

Anomalous magneto-transport properties of bilayer phosphorene.

The magneto-transport properties of phosphorene are investigated by employing the generalized tight-binding model to calculate the energy bands. For bilayer phosphorene, a composite magnetic and electric field is shown to induce a feature-rich Landau level (LL) spectrum which includes two subgroups of low-lying LLs. The two subgroups possess distinct features in level spacings, quantum numbers, as well as field dependencies. These together lead to anomalous quantum Hall (QH) conductivities which include a well-shape, staircase and composite quantum structures with steps having varying heights

Eel-Inspired Self-Powered Hydrogel Nerve Conduit: A Fully Degradable Scaffold for Peripheral Nerve Repair.

Electrical stimulation effectively promotes nerve regeneration and functional recovery, but its clinical application faces challenges such as energy supply limitations, long-term stability issues, and implantation safety concerns. Inspired by the bioelectrogenic mechanism of electric eels, this study developed an electric-eel-inspired ionogel battery (EE-iHB) using chitosan (CS), chondroitin sulfate (CSA), and hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC). The battery exhibits not only excellent biocompatibility but also outstanding ionic conductivity. By mimicking the intricate multilayer structure of electri

Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Study of Methanol-Water Mixtures under External Electric Fields.

Intense electric fields applied on H-bonded systems are able to induce molecular dissociations, proton transfers, and complex chemical reactions. Nevertheless, the effects induced in heterogeneous molecular systems such as methanol-water mixtures are still elusive. Here we report on a series of state-of-the-art ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of liquid methanol-water mixtures at different molar ratios exposed to static electric fields. If, on the one hand, the presence of water increases the proton conductivity of methanol-water mixtures, on the other, it hinders the typical enhanceme

Synergistic enhancement of irreversible electroporation by silver nanowires in three-dimensional tumor models.

Irreversible electroporation (IRE) is an emerging tumor ablation modality that employs high-intensity pulsed electric fields to disrupt cell membranes. However, achieving complete tumor destruction while preserving adjacent critical structures remains a major challenge. In this study, we investigated whether high-aspect-ratio silver nanowires (AgNWs) could enhance IRE efficacy in a three-dimensional hydrogel-based cell model. We systematically evaluated cell viability, ablation area, conductivity, and temperature under various pulse parameters and AgNW concentrations. Increased electric field

Hydrogel and scalp/skin conductivities impact dose from tumor treating fields.

PURPOSE: Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields) are delivered by transducer arrays applied to scalp or body surface for treatment of multiple malignancies. Dermatologic complications are thought to be related to hydrogel situated between the electrodes and scalp or skin to facilitate electric field penetration. High intensity of TTFields on these surfaces may also be a contributing factor. We explored conductivity changes in the hydrogel and skin to improve TTFields coverage and penetration. METHODS: Magnetic resonance imaging datasets from 12 glioblastoma patients and attenuation-corrected positro

Computation of induced electric field for the sacral nerve activation.

The induced electric field/current in the sacral nerve by stimulation devices for the treatment of bladder overactivity is investigated. Implanted and transcutaneous electrode configurations are considered. The electric field induced in the sacral nerve by the implanted electrode is largely affected by its surrounding tissues, which is attributable to the variation in the input impedance of the electrode. In contrast, the electric field induced by the transcutaneous electrode is affected by the tissue conductivity and anatomical composition of the body. In addition, the electric field induced

Interfacial ion transport in cellulose nanocrystal-based ionogels with low ionic liquid content.

This study investigates the gel formation of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) in a hydrophobic ionic liquid, 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (HMIm-TFSI), with the addition of a co-solvent, dimethylformamide (DMF). CNC-based ionogels prepared with very low HMIm-TFSI contents (0.1-0.5 wt%) exhibit higher molar ionic conductivity than gels containing larger amounts of HMIm-TFSI. Application of electric fields to CNC mixtures containing 0.4 wt% HMIm-TFSI induces CNC alignment but does not enhance macroscopic ionic conductivity, indicating that conductivity is not governe

Encapsulating phase change materials into melamine formaldehyde sponge assembled with polypyrrole modified halloysite nanotube for effective solar-thermal energy storage and solar-thermal-electric conversion.

Exploiting inexpensive composite phase change materials (PCMs) with comprehensive characteristics of high encapsulation efficiency, good leakage resistance, strong flexibility, high heat conductivity, and powerful light absorption is considerably imperative for their solar-thermal and solar-thermal-electric conversion. Herein, polypyrrole (PPy) modified halloysite (HNT/PPy) was assembled into the pores of melamine formaldehyde (MF) sponge to construct hierarchical porous structure (MHP), in which PPy serves as light absorber and heat conducting agent to consolidate the light absorption and the

[Physico-chemical parameters of bile in evaluating the course of an inflammatory process in the biliary tract].

Bile electric conductivity and pH were studied in dynamics in 165 patients with acute cholecystitis. The bile was obtained from drains of the gallbladder, choledochus and its terminal part and from percutaneous-transhepatic cholangiostoma. The results of the study proved that the combined changes of the mentioned physicochemical parameters of the bile are determined by the course of the inflammatory process in the biliary tract and pancreas and by the degree of hepatic functional insufficiency. The study demonstrated that in intensification of the inflammation in the biliary tract the changes

Computational Analysis of Tumor Treating Fields for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer in Full Thoracic Models.

PURPOSE: Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields) are alternating electric fields at 150 to 200 kHz that exert their anticancer effect by destroying tumor cells when they undergo mitosis. TTFields are currently being tested in patients with non-small cell lung cancer with advanced disease (NCT02973789) and those with brain metastasis (NCT02831959). However, the distribution of these fields within the thoracic compartment remains poorly understood. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Using positron emission tomography-computed tomography image data sets obtained from a series of 4 patients with poorly differentiat

Simulations of Benzene and Hydrogen-Sulfide Gas Detector Based on Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube over Intrinsic 4H-SiC Substrate.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-based sensors have gained significant importance due to their tremendous electrical and physical attributes. CNT-based gas sensors have high sensitivity, stability, and fast response time compared to that of solid-state sensors. On exposure to a large variety of organic and inorganic compounds, the conductivity of CNT changes. This change in electrical conductivity is being used as a detection signal to detect different target molecules. Hydrogen-sulfide and benzene are hazardous gases that can cause serious health issues in humans. Therefore, it is mandatory to detect

Modeling implanted metals in electrical stimulation applications.

Objective. Metal implants impact the dosimetry assessment in electrical stimulation techniques. Therefore, they need to be included in numerical models. While currents in the body are ionic, metals only allow electron transport. In fact, charge transfer between tissues and metals requires electric fields to drive electrochemical reactions at the interface. Thus, metal implants may act as insulators or as conductors depending on the scenario. The aim of this paper is to provide a theoretical argument that guides the choice of the correct representation of metal implants in electrical models whi

Enhanced Dielectric and Thermal Properties of PVDF-AlN Films for Flexible Dual-Mode Sensors.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), known for flexible wearable sensors and capacitive pressure sensing applications, stands out due to its premier piezoelectric property and excellent biocompatibility. However, the widespread deployment of PVDF-based devices is severely hindered by its inherent low dielectric constant, high dielectric loss, and poor thermal conductivity, which limit sensor sensitivity and response speed. In this paper, we propose a strategy to fabricate large-area high-performance AlN nanoflower-doped PVDF (APVDF) composite films, obtained with excellent dielectric properties (

Deoxymikanolide adversely altered physiology and ultrastructure of Ralstonia solanacearum.

Deoxymikanolide (DEO) was isolated from Mikania micrantha Bunge and identified as a novel antibacterial compound previously. However, the mode of antimicrobial mechanism of DEO was not clear but hypothesized to affect the morphology and physiology of Ralstonia solanacearum cells. In this study, we confirmed our hypothesis via transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation and comprehensive physiological analyses, including electric conductivity, glycan and phosphorus metabolism, activities of antioxidant enzymes (catalase, peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase), intrabacterial reactive oxyg
