[Lipid emulsion therapy for local anaesthetic toxicity. (LipidRescue)].

Intoxication due to local anaesthetic drugs poses a rare but potentially life-threatening complication. In particular long-acting local anaesthetics can cause refractory cardiac arrest due to their lipophilic properties. This is often preceded by neurological symptoms such as confusion, vertigo and tonic-clonic seizures. The clinical efficacy of lipid emulsions in resuscitation from local anaesthetic toxicity has been documented in multiple publications. The injection of local anaesthetics should be stopped immediately upon the first presentation of symptoms. Securing the airway is mandatory t

Trolamine-containing topical emulsion: clinical applications in dermatology.

Trolamine-containing topical emulsion is used to promote and expedite wound healing. This agent has been shown to recruit macrophages, which serve important functions in the wound healing process, and increase the IL-1:IL-6 ratio, which enhances formation of granulation tissue and collagen synthesis. Therapeutic applications have included acute radiation dermatitis and postoperative wounds, and application after cryotherapy for actinic keratosis (AK). This article reviews the mechanism of action and information on clinical applications of trolamine-containing topical emulsion.

Cometabolic degradation of TCE vapors in a foamed emulsion bioreactor.

Effective cometabolic biodegradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) vapors in a novel gas-phase bioreactor called the foamed emulsion bioreactor (FEBR) was demonstrated. Toluene vapors were used as the primary growth substrate for Burkholderia cepacia G4 which cometabolically biodegraded TCE. Batch operation of the reactor with respect to the liquid feed showed a drastic decrease of TCE and toluene removal over time, consistent with a loss of metabolic activity caused by the exposure to TCE metabolites. Sustained TCE removal could be achieved when continuous feeding of mineral medium was implement

Remediation of groundwater contaminated with DNAPLs by biodegradable oil emulsion.

Emulsion-based remediation with biodegradable vegetable oils was investigated as an alternative technology for the treatment of subsurface DNAPLs (dense non-aqueous phase liquids) such as TCE (trichloroethylene) and PCE (perchloroethylene). Corn and olive oil emulsions obtained by homogenization at 8000rpm for 15min were used. The emulsion droplets prepared with corn and olive oil gave a similar size distribution (1-10microm) and almost all of initially injected oil, >90%, remained in a dispersed state. In batch experiments, 2% (v/v) oil emulsion could adsorb up to 11,000ppm of TCE or 18,000pp

Effect of triolein emulsion on the blood-testis barrier in cats.

PURPOSE: Although the blood-testis barrier (BTB) is beneficial physiologically, it acts as an obstacle to chemotherapy. We wished to determine whether a triolein emulsion could alter the permeability of the BTB in cats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An emulsion of 0.05-mL triolein in 20 mL of saline was infused into the abdominal aorta just proximal to the branching of the renal arteries of each of 15 cats (embolic group). As controls, 12 cats were each similarly infused with 20 mL of normal saline (control group). Pre and postcontrast MR images were obtained 30 minutes and 2 hours after embolizatio

Metal-catalyzed oxidation of a structured lipid model emulsion.

The effects of temperature, time, metal, citric acid, and tocopherol contents on the oxidation stability of a model oil-in-water emulsion prepared with enzymatically synthesized menhaden oil-caprylic acid structured lipid were evaluated by response surface methodology. The emulsions were stabilized by whey protein isolate. Oxidation was monitored by measuring lipid hydroperoxides and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). Cupric sulfate and ferrous sulfate were used to study the effect of metal concentration and type. A statistical model was developed to determine the relationships b

A historical perspective and review of the safety of lipid emulsion in pregnancy.

Total parenteral nutrition for pregnant patients is essential to maintain or restore optimal nutritional status for both the mother and fetus when adequate protein and caloric intake by the oral or enteral route is not feasible. This report reviews the safety of intravenous lipid emulsions in total parenteral nutrition programs for pregnant patients. Controversy regarding the adverse effects of intravenous lipid emulsion when administered to pregnant patients is based on early reports of the use of cottonseed oil lipid emulsions. The adverse effects reported included infarction of the placenta

Propofol in emulsion form: induction characteristics and venous sequelae.

Propofol in a 1% emulsion was used to induce anaesthesia in 20 female patients premedicated with diazepam (10 mg). A dose of 2.5 mg kg-1 produced a rapid loss of consciousness and only minor excitatory effects. Discomfort during the injection was not severe. Cardiovascular changes included a fall in blood pressure similar to that which occurs with other induction agents, and a decrease in pulse rate. Apnoea occurred after each induction and in some patients (13) was prolonged (greater than 60 s). There were no venous sequelae, and patient acceptance was high. Propofol given in an emulsion to i

Effect of intravenous fat emulsion on experimental acute pancreatitis.

The known relationship of hyperlipidemia and pancreatitis raises the question whether intravenous fat emulsion is detrimental in acute pancreatitis. Pancreatitis was induced in 52 male Sprague-Dawley rats followed by placement of a jugular catheter which was anchored to the back with a Teflon button. The animals were placed NPO in metabolic cages and continuously infused, initially with normal saline. The 37 animals surviving 24 hr were randomly assigned to group I (mean iv intake: glucose 222 kcal/kg/day; amino acids 13.1 g/kg/day) or group II (glucose 191 kcal/kg/day; intravenous fat emulsio

Parenteral use of diazepam in an emulsion formulation. A clinical study.

A recently described injection formulation for diazepam, consisting of an oil emulsion where the drug is dissolved in the oil phase, has been found to give a lessened degree of side reactions than commercially available preparations. This emulsion formulation was compared to Valium inj. as premedication in patients undergoing operation for hernia or varices under epidural anaesthesia. The effects, measured as the degree of drowsiness according to an arbitrary scale, were found to be equal for the two formulations. Neither was there any difference in blood concentrations in the two application

Preparation of perfluorodecalin emulsion, an approach to the red cells substitute.

The major problems unsolved in fluorocarbon emulsions have been the long lasting retention of the substance in tissues of organs and acute shock symptom in animals receiving "coarse" emulsion with particles larger then 0.2 mum. This report offers a new, stable and sterile preparation of 25% "fine" perfluorodecalin emulsion with yolk phospholipid that is eliminated from liver, spleen and other organs within a few weeks, and whose acute and subacute toxicity is as low as perfluorotributylamine/Pluronic F68 emulsion. Effects of the perfluorodecalin emulsion thus prepared for maintaining contracti

Unveiling the fate of lipid crystalline structures in engineered emulsions during in vitro digestion.

This study investigates how lipid crystalline structures in emulsions evolve during digestion, aiming to inform functional food design and potentially modulate lipid digestion. Using synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction, we monitored real-time structural transformations of lipids during in vitro digestion of 16 emulsions with varied lipid phases and emulsifiers, revealing rapid, composition-dependent transformations. These changes include lamellar packing changes and the emergence of different polymorphic forms originating from digestion products, as early as the first two minutes of lipolysis.

Nanoparticle-stabilized water-in-water emulsions: A critical review of formation, stabilization, and applications.

Water-in-water (W/W) emulsions are unique colloidal systems composed of two immiscible aqueous phases, featuring ultra-low interfacial tension, mild preparation conditions, and excellent biocompatibility. Owing to their distinctive interfacial properties and non-toxic aqueous environment, W/W emulsions have attracted extensive attention across colloid and interface science, food science, biomedicine, and pharmaceutical engineering, and have gradually become a hot research topic in interdisciplinary fields. In particular, recent advances have highlighted the importance of nanoparticle-stabilize

Oil-Based Phase Change Emulsions Endowed with High Thermal Conductivity and Responsive Rheological Behavior.

To overcome the low thermal conductivity and flow channel clogging inherent in traditional phase change materials (PCMs) for immersion cooling, this study develops a novel oil-based phase change emulsion (PCE) integrating high thermal transport with adaptive rheological behavior. A liquid thermal conductivity enhancer was synthesized by modifying epoxidized soybean oil with LiTFSI and blending it with a synthetic ester to form a dielectric base fluid. A mid-to-low-temperature PCM (Span65) was then incorporated via surfactant-free ultrasonic emulsification. The resulting PCE exhibits a tunable
