Seven principles for a critical transdisciplinary approach to planetary health.

The ecological, social, and health crises of the Anthropocene demand approaches to knowledge that confront complexity, uncertainty, and structural injustice. Transdisciplinarity is an approach that can transcend disciplinary silos by integrating academic and non-academic knowledge. Yet, action on public health, planetary health, and health inequities is often implemented in technocratic, depoliticised, and tokenistic ways. Such practices risk marginalising lived experience, reinforcing epistemic hierarchies, and overlooking structural drivers such as capitalism, colonialism, and patriarchy. Dr

Structural Inequities and Chronic Disease in Fresno County: A Narrative Review and Multi-sectoral Framework.

Despite California's favorable statewide health profile, significant intra-state disparities exist. Fresno County, located in the Central Valley, consistently ranks among the state's worst-performing counties for health outcomes, presenting a critical case study in health inequity. This study analyzes the prevalence of chronic diseases in Fresno County and investigates the underlying factors contributing to this public health crisis. A comparative analysis was conducted using public health data from 2018 to 2021 to assess the prevalence of major chronic diseases, including obesity, hypertensio

An ecosystem of carbon dioxide removal reviews - part 1: direct air CO2 capture and storage.

Direct air CO2 capture and storage (DACCS) is a technology in an emerging portfolio for carbon dioxide removal (CDR), understood to play a critical role in stabilising our climate by offsetting residual carbon emissions and ensuring net-negative greenhouse gas emissions post reaching net-zero. Carbon dioxide removal is anticipated to gain further importance due to lacking progress on climate reduction efforts. Meanwhile, CDR, including DACCS, is transitioning from a merely scientific effort to implementation, requiring policy and decision making based on a comprehensive understanding of the sc

Providing substance use disorder treatment in correctional settings: knowledge gaps and proposed research priorities-overview and commentary.

This manuscript is the product of the authors' discussions, literature overview, and consultation with experts in the field, and identifies important gaps in the evidence base for substance use disorder (SUD) treatment effectiveness within criminal justice (CJ) settings. Lacking from the extant literature are longitudinal investigations of treatment related outcomes during and after incarceration. Such studies could provide rich contextual data about treatment delivery and effectiveness across the CJ continuum, and would provide important insight into individual characteristics (e.g., motivati

Protecting Public Health With Clean Transportation in North Carolina.

BACKGROUND: Traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) is an increasingly predominant source of air pollution in North Carolina (NC). Several executive orders have sought to address TRAP and prevent potential health effects from this source of exposure. In January 2022, NC Governor Roy Cooper signed Executive Order 246 (EO 246), which directed the North Carolina Department of Transportation to develop the North Carolina Clean Transportation Plan with considerations for environmental justice (EJ) and equity, in addition to establishing new goals for reduction of greenhouse gases in North Carolina and

JAHA at Scientific Sessions 2024: Climate Change-Related Cardiovascular Health Effects in the Global South.

Climate change poses an escalating threat to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health in the Global South, where vulnerability is amplified by rapid urbanization, poverty, and weak infrastructure. Air pollution (driven by fossil fuel use, industrial growth, and poor regulation) remains a major contributor to cardiovascular disease and respiratory illness, with regions such as South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa experiencing the highest burdens. Extreme heat, floods, and natural disasters further compound cardiovascular risks through direct physiological stress and disruption of health care syst

The Sixth Mass Extinction and Amphibian Species Sustainability Through Reproduction and Advanced Biotechnologies, Biobanking of Germplasm and Somatic Cells, and Conservation Breeding Programs (RBCs).

Primary themes in intergenerational justice are a healthy environment, the perpetuation of Earth's biodiversity, and the sustainable management of the biosphere. However, the current rate of species declines globally, ecosystem collapses driven by accelerating and catastrophic global heating, and a plethora of other threats preclude the ability of habitat protection alone to prevent a cascade of amphibian and other species mass extinctions. Reproduction and advanced biotechnologies, biobanking of germplasm and somatic cells, and conservation breeding programs (RBCs) offer a transformative chan

Effects of Prolonged Exposure to Air Pollution and Neighborhood Disadvantage on Self-Rated Health among Adults in the United States: Evidence from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics.

BACKGROUND: Although overall air quality has improved in the United States, air pollution remains unevenly distributed across neighborhoods, producing disproportionate environmental burdens for minoritized and socioeconomically disadvantaged residents for whom greater exposure to other structurally rooted neighborhood stressors is also more frequent. These interrelated dynamics and layered vulnerabilities each have well-documented associations with physical and psychological health outcomes; however, much remains unknown about the joint effects of environmental hazards and neighborhood socioec

Residents' experiences during a hydrogen sulfide crisis in Carson, California.

BACKGROUND: In early October 2021, thousands of residents in Carson, California began complaining of malodors and headaches. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a noxious odorous gas, was measured at concentrations up to 7000 parts per billion (ppb) and remained above California's acute air quality standard of 30 ppb for a month. Intermittent elevations of H2S continued for 3 months. After 2 months of malodor in this environmental justice community, a government agency attributed the H2S to environmental pollution from a warehouse fire. Research has yielded conflicting results on the health effects of H2S

Insights from coproduced scenarios toward urban sustainability transformations.

Urban sustainability transformations call for fundamental shifts in how cities are organized, developed, and governed. Yet we need a better understanding of the diversity of visions and pathways that can enable transformative change. We address this gap through an analysis of 60 coproduced positive scenario visions and pathways developed using the Sustainable Future Scenario process, across nine US and Latin American cities participating in the Urban Resilience to Extremes Sustainability Research Network. We engaged diverse urban stakeholders-including government, nonprofit, and private decisi

Structural stigma and intersectional inequality in schizophrenia: A systematic review and qualitative meta-synthesis.

Schizophrenia is unequally distributed across social hierarchies and is associated with stratified pathways of care, coercion, and recovery. Although stigma has been widely studied, existing scholarship has predominantly emphasized interpersonal attitudes and individual behavior, leaving structural stigma embedded in policy regimes, institutional practices, and epistemic hierarchies insufficiently synthesized. Guided by PRISMA 2020, this systematic review and qualitative meta-synthesis examined 29 sources, comprising 17 core empirical studies and 12 contextual or theoretical sources, addressin

Intercomparison of Modeled Urban-Scale Vehicle NOx and PM2.5 Emissions-Implications for Equity Assessments.

Accurate characterization of emissions is essential for understanding spatiotemporal variations of air pollutants and their societal impacts, including population exposure, health outcomes, and environmental justice implications. Characterizing emissions from the transportation sector is challenging due to uncertainties in emission-producing processes and in fleet composition and activity-factors that lead to differences across modeled vehicle emissions data sets. Here, we compare four data sets─Fuel-Inventory Vehicle Emissions, Neighborhood Emission Mapping Operation, Lake Michigan Air Direct

Between utopias and everyday practices: ecopreneurs and new urban economies in Bologna.

This article examines how New Urban Economies (NUEs) contribute to, and reveal the contradictions of, socio-ecological transition in Italian cities, using Bologna as a case study. It brings together three strands of research that are usually treated separately: studies of distinctive and environmentally oriented consumption practices; sustainable entrepreneurship research combining supply-side and demand-side explanations; and scholarship on temporality, prefiguration, and everyday utopias. Integrating these perspectives allows us to shift attention from macro-level sustainability indicators t

Addressing Cardiovascular Toxicity Risk of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems in the Twenty-First Century: "What Are the Tools Needed for the Job?" and "Do We Have Them?".

Cigarette smoking is positively and robustly associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD), including hypertension, atherosclerosis, cardiac arrhythmias, stroke, thromboembolism, myocardial infarctions, and heart failure. However, after more than a decade of ENDS presence in the U.S. marketplace, uncertainty persists regarding the long-term health consequences of ENDS use for CVD. New approach methods (NAMs) in the field of toxicology are being developed to enhance rapid prediction of human health hazards. Recent technical advances can now consider impact of biological factors such as sex and r

Hurricanes and turbulent floods threaten arsenic-contaminated coastal soils and vulnerable communities.

Coastal environments, particularly those adjacent to Superfund sites, are at increased risk of contaminant release during natural disasters, posing serious threats to nearby communities. To investigate this issue, we employed an advanced laboratory flood simulator to impose arsenic-contaminated sediments to turbulent flooding events. We further monitored changes in arsenic collocation and solid-phase speciation using advanced synchrotron radiation-based techniques to understand the impacts of flooding on arsenic mobility. Our results demonstrate that turbulent conditions significantly enhance

Quantifying Disparities in Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Levels in Drinking Water from Overburdened Communities in New Jersey, 2019-2021.

BACKGROUND: Policymakers have become increasingly concerned regarding the widespread exposure and toxicity of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). While concerns exist about unequal distribution of PFAS contamination in drinking water, research is lacking. OBJECTIVES: We assess the scope of PFAS contamination in drinking water in New Jersey (NJ), the first US state to develop regulatory levels for PFAS in drinking water. We test for inequities in PFAS concentrations by community sociodemographic characteristics. METHODS: We use PFAS testing data for community water systems (CWS) (n=49
