BACKGROUND: Traditional medicinal knowledge is central to healthcare and cultural identity in Ethiopia, particularly in the Somali Region, where plant-based remedies are widely used. Despite its importance, this knowledge remains underdocumented. This study aims to fill this gap by documenting the medicinal plants (MPs) used by the Somali community in the Karamara forest patches of eastern Ethiopia, focusing on their cultural significance, conservation status, and role in local healthcare. It also highlights the need to preserve both the knowledge and the threatened ecosystems that support it.

BACKGROUND: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a major public health concern, particularly in resource-limited settings such as Africa. This meta-analysis aimed to determine the proportion of MRSA among S. aureus isolates from patients with confirmed infections and to assess associated antibiotic resistance profiles across the continent.
METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in African Journals Online, African Index Medicus, PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science for studies published between January 1, 2013, and June 5, 2024. Primary studies

BACKGROUND: Newcastle disease virus (NDV) is a causative agent of Newcastle disease (ND), a major infectious poultry disease associated with significant economic losses. Vaccination is usually effective at preventing the disease. However, in Ethiopia, ND is commonly detected in both unvaccinated and vaccinated chickens. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the pathogenicity of NDV isolated from both vaccinated and unvaccinated chickens, as well as to compare the antigenicity of the isolates with vaccine strains and genotyping by using the F-gene sequence.
METHODS: The partial F gene sequences

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 disrupted childhood vaccination, but country-specific heterogeneity in diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis-containing vaccines (DTP3) coverage across the WHO African region remains poorly understood. This study addressed this gap by quantifying temporal trajectories and identifying latent structural patterns in DTP3 coverage across all 47 countries in the WHO African region from 2019 to 2024, spanning the onset and recovery phases of the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: Country-level DTP3 coverage data from 2019 to 2024 were extracted from the WHO/United Nations Children's Fund Est

BACKGROUND: Migrants in Europe often face barriers to vaccination, increasing their vulnerability to vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs). Despite policies promoting catch-up immunisation on arrival, data on VPD burden and outcomes among migrants remain limited. This systematic review synthesises evidence on the prevalence, incidence, mortality, and outcomes of VPDs in migrants across EU/EEA countries, UK, and Switzerland.
METHODS: We searched Medline, Embase, Global Health, and grey literature sources (including websites of national public health organisations and agencies) for primary studie

BACKGROUND: As of the end of 2021, twenty-four countries in the African meningitis belt have rolled out mass campaigns of MenAfriVac®, a meningococcal A conjugate vaccine (MACV) first introduced in 2010. Twelve have completed introduction of MACV into routine immunisation (RI) schedules. Although select post-campaign coverage data are published, no study currently comprehensively estimates MACV coverage from both routine and campaign sources in the meningitis belt across age, country, and time.
METHODS: In this modelling study, we assembled campaign data from the twenty-four countries that ha

BACKGROUND: The experience of forced migration, along with post-migration stressors, can elevate the risk of poor sexual health outcomes among young people. Despite this, little evidence is available on the sexual health needs, behaviors, and healthcare utilization of young male forced migrants in Sweden and elsewhere.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the attitudes, perceived knowledge, experiences, and needs of young Eritrean, Afghan, and Syrian men regarding condom use, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), transactional sex, and sexual healthcare utilization.

Strawberries are a high-value crop in the United States due to their increasing demand and nutritional benefits. Strawberry production faces significant losses due to gray mold fruit rot caused by Botrytis cinerea. While fungicides provide major control, concerns about residues and the evolution of fungicide resistance demand alternative approaches to disease management. In this context, our study evaluated the potential use of potassium silicate (K2SiO3) to enhance agronomic traits in plants, elucidate its role in combating gray mold in strawberries, and identify the responsible genes. In the thirteen years since the first report of pfhrp2-deleted parasites in 2010, the World Health Organization (WHO) has found that 40 of 47 countries surveyed worldwide have reported pfhrp2/3 gene deletions. Due to a high prevalence of pfhrp2/3 deletions causing false-negative HRP2 RDTs, in the last five years, Eritrea, Djibouti and Ethiopia have switched or started switching to using alternative RDTs, that target pan-specific-pLDH or P. falciparum specific-pLDH alone of in combination with HRP2. However, manufacturing of alternative RDTs has not been brought to scale and there are no WHO pr

BACKGROUND: The report from the World Health Organization (WHO) reveals that health spending worldwide remains highly unequal as more than 80% of the world's population live in low and middle-income countries but only account for about 20% of global health expenditure. Another report by the WHO on the state of health financing in Africa published in 2013 intimates that countries that are part of their member states are still on the average level in meeting set goals in financing key health projects.
OBJECTIVE: The study set out to investigate the association between public and private spendin

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis [VL] is a debilitating parasitic disease which invariably kills untreated patients. The disease is caused by Leishmania (L.) donovani or L. infantum, and transmitted by the bite of female phlebotomine sandflies. VL often remains subclinical but can become symptomatic with an acute/subacute or chronic course. Globally, the Eastern Africa region is one of the main VL endemic areas. The disease is prevalent in numerous foci within Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan South Sudan, and Uganda. In Ethiopia, the Lower Omo plain is one of the many VL endemic regi

Zika virus belongs to the genus Flavivirus of the family Flaviviridae; it is transmitted to humans primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito (e.g., Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus) (1). Zika virus has been identified as a cause of congenital microcephaly and other serious brain defects (2). As of June 30, 2016, CDC had issued travel notices for 49 countries and U.S. territories across much of the Western hemisphere (3), including Brazil, where the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games (Games of the XXXI Olympiad, also known as Rio 2016; Games) will be hosted in Rio de Janeiro

BACKGROUND: The pandemic of HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa and the rise of epidemics in Asia to the previously unforeseen level are likely to have global social, economic, and political impacts. In this emergency, it is vital to reappraise the weight of powerful religious and cultural factors in spreading the disease. The role of Islam in shaping values, norms, and public policies in North African states is to be appreciated for the lowest HIV prevalence in their populations. Yet, the place of religion in prevention of the disease diffusion is not fully understood nor worldwide acknowledged by

BACKGROUND: Child mortality is one of the key indicators of the Sustainable development goals. The Ethiopian healthcare system in general and Tigray's healthcare system in particular has shown a remarkable progress in terms of reducing maternal, neonatal, and under-five mortality in the last couple of decades. However, the war erupted in November 2020 caused the healthcare system to collapse and little is known about the status of child mortality in Tigray. Thus, this study aimed to examine the magnitude and causes of under-five child mortality in the embattled Tigray region was conducted from

BACKGROUND: Reports of natural infections of Schistosoma mansoni in a number of species of nonhuman primates (NHPs) in Africa, coupled with the substantial overlap of NHP habitats and human schistosomiasis endemic areas, has led to concerns about the role of NHPs in the transmission of human schistosomiasis. We conducted a systematic review of the literature to describe the current scope of knowledge for Africa, for the NHP species implicated, their geographical distribution, infection rates with S. mansoni, and to discuss the implications for public health and conservation.

BACKGROUND: Refugee youth experience hardships associated with exposure to trauma in their homelands and during and after displacement, which results in higher rates of common mental disorders. The World Health Organization (WHO) developed Problem Management Plus (PM+), a non-specialist-delivered brief psychological intervention, for individuals who have faced adversity. PM+ comprises problem-solving, stress management, behavioural activation and strengthening social support. However, it does not include an emotional processing component, which is indicated in trauma-exposed populations.

BACKGROUND: With more than 20,000 asylum seekers arriving every year, healthcare for this population has become an important issue. Pregnant asylum seekers seem to be at risk of poor pregnancy outcomes. This study aimed to assess the difference in pregnancy outcomes between asylum seekers and the local Dutch population and to identify potential substandard factors of care.
METHODS: Using a retrospective study design we compared pregnancy outcomes of asylum-seeking and Dutch women who gave birth in a northern region of the Netherlands between January 2012 and December 2016. The following data

Application of growing degree day-water budget analysis and satellite climatology to vector-borne parasites will be reviewed to demonstrate the value of using the unique thermal-hydrological preferences and limits of tolerance of individual parasite-vector systems to define the environmental niche of disease agents in the landscape by modern geospatial analysis methods. Applications of geospatial modeling will be illustrated by examples on fascioliasis, malaria, leprosy and leishmaniasis.
