BACKGROUND: Erythematous tender nodules predominantly involving extremities are frequently encountered in dermatology and rheumatology practice. They are diagnosed based on distinct clinical and histopathological features. However, in clinical situations, considerable overlap is observed that poses a diagnostic challenge. We undertook a study on clinico-histological patterns of inflammatory nodules over extremities.
METHODS: After detailed history and examination, a preliminary clinical diagnosis was made in 43 cases, followed by skin biopsy from representative nodules. Histological diagnosis

UNLABELLED: The second part of our review of panniculitis summarizes the clinicopathologic features of the mostly lobular panniculitides. Erythema induratum of Bazin (nodular vasculitis) represents the most common variant of lobular panniculitis with vasculitis, although controversy persists about the nature of the involved vessels. Mostly lobular panniculitides without vasculitis comprise a series of disparate disorders. These include sclerosing panniculitis that results from chronic venous insufficiency of the lower extremities; panniculitis with calcification of the vessel walls such as cal…

Cutaneous tuberculosis in children is a major health problem in India. It accounts for about 1.5% of all the cases of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Scrofuloderma and lupus vulgaris are the two most common forms of tuberculosis. However, the trend in the pattern of cutaneous tuberculosis is changing, as the tuberculid, lichen scrofulosorum, has become more common in recent years. Overall, the clinical patterns are comparable with adults. However, children can have widespread and severe involvement because many unusual and uncommon patterns are known to occur in children. Underlying systemic invo

We report a chronic case of nodular vasculitis that responded to oral clofazimine 300 mg daily. The condition had previously responded to moderate dose oral prednisolone, 50 mg daily, but would recur with weaning. Multiple corticosteroid-sparing agents were trialled, however these were either ineffective or poorly tolerated. The introduction of clofazimine enabled prednisolone dose reduction, not achieved with other agents, to 22.5 mg daily, and was associated with complete suppression of disease activity. Unfortunately the patient developed a clofazimine-induced enteropathy and the treatment

A revision of in and out patients' cases of cutaneous tuberculosis is made, joining them in typical forms and tuberculids. From a total of 70 patients, 49 corresponded to typical forms and the rest to tuberculids. They are joining by sex, middle age and nationality remarking if there was any association or no to another envolvement sides and at last, 9 cases with some peculiar characteristics are mentioned.

Papulonecrotic tuberculid (PNT), a form of cutaneous tuberculosis (TB), is uncommon in children. We identified eight children (six girls and … m, but phlyctenular conjunctivitis and associated TB are more common, scrofuloderma and concomitant erythema induratum of Bazin are unusual, and vasculitis is not found. In cases where M. tuberculosis DNA can be confirmed with PCR, papulonecrotic TB is perhaps the more appropriate nomenclature.

INTRODUCTION: Adjuvants (for example, aluminum salts) are frequently incorporated in licensed vaccines to enhance the host immune response. Such vaccines include the pneumococcal conjugate, combinations of diphtheria-tetanus/acellular pertussis, tetanus- diphtheria/acellular pertussis, hepatitis B, some Haemophilus influenzae type b, hepatitis A, and human papillomavirus. These preparations have been associated with complicated local adverse events, especially if administered subcutaneously or intradermally in comparison to deep intramuscular injection. We describe a severe inflammatory reacti

Cutaneous tuberculosis is a specific form of tuberculosis, with various clinical pictures and resulting from either endo- or exogenous way of infection, immunological mechanisms and unfavourable conditions for mycobacterium development. The atypical course and symptoms of the disease may cause difficulties in obtaining proper diagnosis and, in consequence, result in delayed onset of appropriate treatment. When diagnosing cutaneous tuberculosis, a broad spectrum of differential diagnoses should be applied, taking into account other diseases, such as, among others, leishmaniasis, actinomycosis,

Twenty-seven cases were treated with BB-K8, a new derivative of kanamycin acylated with l-(-)-gamma-amino-alpha-hydroxybutyric acid at the C-1 amino group of the 2-deoxystreptamine moiety. The majority of them were acute primary pyoderma and acute secondary pyoderma. BB-K8 was effective in 23 cases (85.2%) out of 27 cases treated and no side effect was encountered. BB-K8 had antibacterial activity against not only Staphylococcus but also Pseudomonas and Klebsiella. Thus, BB-K8 was considered to be effective in acute pyodermic condition.

Erythema nodosum is the most frequent clinicopathological variant of the panniculitides. The disorder is a cutaneous reaction consisting of inflammatory nodular lesions, usually located on the lower extremities. It may be associated with a wide variety of diseases, infections, sarcoidosis, rheumatologic diseases, inflammatory bowel diseases, medications and malignancies. Relationship between erythema nodosum and malignant lymphoma is described in the article. A review of the literature suggest that the diagnosis of Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's disease should be considered in patients with unexp

Leukotriene-modifying drugs are novel agents introduced recently to treat asthma. Both 5-lipoxygenase inhibitors, such as zileuton, and leukotriene receptor antagonists, such as zafirlukast and montelukast, have proved effective in the treatment of asthma. To our knowledge, there have been no detailed reports regarding dermatologic manifestations of this class of drugs. This article describes an unusual case of erythema nodosum in a 46-year-old asthmatic man who received 2 different leukotriene modifiers.

Commonly used dermatologic eponyms and characteristic skin signs are enormously helpful in guiding a diagnosis, even though they may not be pathonemonic. They include, on the nails, Aldrich-Mees' lines (syn.: Mees' lines), Beau's lines, Muehrcke's lines, Terry's nails, and half and half nails, often associated, respectively, with arsenic poisoning, acute stress or systemic illness, severe hypertension, liver disease and uremia, and, around the nails, Braverman's sign, associated with collagen-vascular disease. Elsewhere, one may see the Asboe-Hansen and Nikolsky's signs, indicative of the pemp

Cutaneous tuberculosis is a rare form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis that accounts for 1% to 2% of cases. Childhood skin tuberculosis represents 18% to 82% of all cutaneous tuberculosis cases. Scrofuloderma and lupus vulgaris are the two most common clinical forms in children. An increase in the number of tuberculids, especially lichen scrofulosorum, has been observed in the last several years. Cutaneous tuberculosis in children can be severe and have a protracted course. Multiplicity of lesions and multifocal disseminated involvement in scrofuloderma and lupus vulgaris is common. Scrofuloderm

Cutaneous manifestations occur in the course of hematologic malignancies and precede, accompany or occur late in relation to the diagnosis. They result from paraneoplastic phenomena, tumor infiltrations, immunosuppression resulting from the hematologic disease itself or its treatment. The dermatologist must be aware of these conditions that may be helpful both in the diagnosis of the underlying disease and in reducing patient morbidity. This review (part II) addresses the paraneoplastic dermatological changes associated with systemic hematologic malignancies.
