BACKGROUND: Hypospadias is a common urogenital system disorder. The frenulum, which is the most sensitive area of the glans penis, is not present in patients with hypospadias. This may lead to a failure in sexual and ejaculatory function, and cause emotional problems affecting cognitive processes.
AIM: We aimed to study auditory Event Related Potentials (ERP) in patients with hypospadias to understand the status of cognitive function.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventeen patients with hypospadias who presented to the Urology Outpatient Clinic of Çanakkale Military Hospital, and 11 healthy indivi

Maternal responsiveness plays an important role in child development. Event-related potentials can be used to examine neural mechanisms underlying maternal responsivity. Here, associations between neural markers of maternal responsivity and five child development domains-cognitive, language, motor, adaptive behavior, and social-emotional development-were examined in 94 mothers (Mage = 29.19 years; 41% African American, 28% Caucasian, 19% Hispanic or Latina, 4% Asian or Asian American, 7% other or not reported) and their infants (Mage = 7.75 months; 60% female). Child development was assessed u

Although it is well known that attractiveness-based impressions affect the labor market, election outcomes and many other social activities, little is known about the role physical attractiveness plays in financial transactions. With the development of online finance, peer-to-peer lending has become one of the most important ways in which businesses or individuals raise capital. However, because of information asymmetry, the lender must decide whether or not to lend money to a stranger based on limited information, resulting in their decision being influenced by many other factors. In the curr

Blood can be easily recognized in situations involving injury. However, very little is known about the ability of humans to identify blood without such context information. We investigated the blood detection capacity and associated electrocortical correlates (event-related potentials) in 20 women with blood phobia and 20 non-phobic females. The participants viewed images depicting droplets of pig blood, and water with pink or red food coloring. They were asked to decide, whether the pictures showed real blood or not. Blood provoked enhanced P100 amplitudes (90-140 ms) in blood phobics. Late p

Type 1 diabetes mellitus is associated with cognitive changes, but the extent of cognition decline depends on age at onset, duration of diabetes, and occurrence of attacks of hypoglycemia or ketoacidosis. This study was designed to assess cognitive function in a group of children with type 1 diabetes mellitus. A total of 40 diabetic children were recruited from the pediatric department of Assiut University Hospital, Egypt. Forty healthy children matched for age, sex, and socioeconomic status were chosen as controls for comparison. Cognition was assessed using Stanford-Binet and event-related p

Postnatal depression and anxiety disorders pose a major burden on maternal mental health. While psychosocial risk factors for perinatal depression and anxiety are well-researched, there is a dearth of research examining neural biomarkers of risk for postnatal increases in depression and anxiety. Previous studies suggest two different event-related potentials, the P300 and the late positive potential (LPP), may predict the course of depressive and anxious symptoms in non-perinatal populations. In a sample of 221 perinatal women, the present study utilized an emotional interrupt task administere

Patients with schizophrenia show impaired face and emotional expression processing that may be due to early perceptual deficits or late impairments in higher-order emotional facial recognition. This study examined event-related potentials (ERPs) in 23 patients with schizophrenia who experience auditory hallucinations and 19 healthy controls. EEG activity was recorded from 32 scalp sites positioned according to the 10-10 placement system. Linked left and right electrodes at the mastoids served as the reference. The P100, N170 and P300 were measured during an emotional facial identification task

Early childhood and family experience have profound effects on both emotional and neural development. The present study examined the unique associations between three early risk factors for depression-family history of depression, parenting style, and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)-and neurophysiological reactivity to emotional stimuli, as indexed by the P300/Late Positive Potential (LPP) complex. Seventy-nine young adults (72.2% females; M = 21.7 years) completed the Family History Screen, Parental Bonding Instrument, and ACE questionnaire and performed an EEG task with pleasant, unplea

BACKGROUND: Missing action completion signals are assumed to trigger repetitive behavior and feelings of the action "not being right". This proposal is based mostly on individual's self-reports. Here, we investigated the influence of experimentally manipulated action completion experience and the obsessive-compulsive (OC) trait of incompleteness on behavioral and neurophysiological measures of action inhibition.
METHODS: Action completion was manipulated in an adapted Go/NoGo task, and OC trait incompleteness was assessed in healthy participants. More commission errors and faster responses we

The abnormal brain discharges observed in benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS) and temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) are located close to areas responsible for auditory and language processing. This study aimed to analyze the results of auditory event-related potentials (P300) in children with BECTS and TLE in order to assess whether the epileptic activity in centrotemporal and temporal regions may compromise the integrity and physiology of auditory system structures. This was a prospective, comparative, and cross-sectional study. Group I (GI) consisted of 13 children diagno

Based on growing evidence suggesting that professional music training facilitates foreign language perception and learning, we examined the impact of musical expertise on the categorisation of syllables including phonemes that did (/p/, /b/) or did not (/ph /) belong to the French repertoire by analysing both behaviour (error rates and reaction times) and Event-Related brain Potentials (N200 and P300 components). Professional musicians and nonmusicians categorised syllables either as /ba/ or /pa/ (voicing task), or as /pa/ or /ph a/ with /ph / being a nonnative phoneme for French speakers (asp

Few theories of the P3 component have emphasized the distinction between its parietal and frontocentral parts. This study used a new paradigm for testing the predictions that the parietal P3 is evoked by awaited stimuli (suspense) and the frontal P3 by unexpected stimuli (surprise). Subjects had to make simple responses whenever a yellow ring appeared. This signal appeared on the screen within a clock, most frequently when the pointer was at 12 o'clock (every 6 s) but sometimes also at other times. The suspense process should therefore have its minimum shortly after 12 o'clock and then steadil

Background: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by symptoms associated with difficulties in emotion regulation, altered self-image, impulsivity, and instability in personal relationships. A relationship has been found between BPD symptoms and altered neuropsychological processes. Studies of event-related potentials (ERP) measured with electroencephalogram (EEG) have found neural correlates related to BPD symptoms. Of note is the P300 component, considered a potential mental health biomarker for trauma-associated disorders. However, no meta-analysis has been found to demonstr

CONTEXT: Tic disorders (TD) are characterized by the presence of non-voluntary contractions of functionally related groups of skeletal muscles in one or multiple body parts. Patients with body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRB) present frequent and repetitive behaviors, such as nail biting or hair pulling. TD and BFRB can be treated with a cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) that regulates the excessive amount of sensorimotor activation and muscular tension. Our CBT, which is called the cognitive-psychophysiological (CoPs) model, targets motor execution and inhibition, and it was reported to m

OBJECTIVE: The P300 ERP component is a marker of reduced capacity in alcohol use disorder (AUD) to engage attentional mechanisms and update memory representations. No meta-analysis to date has been completed comparing effect size estimates of auditory vs. visual stimuli in AUD. In addition, there is a lack of consensus on whether the P3b in women is reduced, or whether the P3a - an earlier, more frontally distributed component - is reduced in AUD.
METHODS: Strict inclusion criteria and data-analysis plans were implemented. Eligible studies needed to diagnose AUD using DSM or ICD-10 and exclud

PURPOSE: This longitudinal study investigated whether P300 event-related potential (ERP) amplitude demonstrates group-level and longitudinal differences between stable and progressive mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and whether these electrophysiological changes may serve as preliminary markers associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression.
METHOD: Fifty-four participants, including 27 cognitively unimpaired (CU) individuals and 27 individuals with multi-domain amnestic MCI, underwent EEG recording during a visual oddball task at baseline and follow-up assessment. Within 1 year, 14 MC

Patients with psychotic illnesses, including early onset psychosis (EOP), often experience cognitive impairment. The cerebellum is critically involved in neurocognitive processes, yet possible regional alterations in the cerebellum and their associations with behavioral parameters remain largely unexplored in EOP. In this preliminary study, we aimed to investigate structural morphological properties of the cerebellum as well as the supratentorial brain, and how morphological changes in the central nervous system relate to neurocognitive performance in children with EOP and clinical high-risk f

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most common type of localization-related epilepsy (LRE) and has been extensively studied in the field of neuropsychology due to its significant association with cognitive impairments. Cognitive decline has long been recognized as a consequence of this form of epilepsy, with previous studies primarily focusing on neurophysiological measures. In this study, both neurophysiological and neuropsychological factors were analyzed in TLE patients compared to healthy control subjects. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) t

PURPOSE: Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder that may be complicated by neurobehavioral comorbidities. In a previous study, we identified impairment of empathy in patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE). However, the temporal processing of empathy in patients with IGE is not well understood.
METHODS: We investigated empathy for pain and self-reported empathy in 21 patients with IGE and 22 healthy control subjects. All study participants were required to complete a pain empathy task involving images of individuals in pain and neutral conditions during recording of event-rela
