Changes and roles of intestinal fungal microbiota in coronary heart disease complicated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

BACKGROUND: Patients who suffered coronary heart disease (CHD) complicated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) were reported to have worse cardiac function and clinical outcomes than patients with CHD only. The mechanism was unclear. Previous study focused on the metabolism and showed it could be regulated by the microbiota. Few studies related to fungi. We aimed to investigate the characteristics of intestinal fungal microbiota in CHD patients complicated with NAFLD (CHD-NAFLD). METHODS: 72 People were recruited and equally divided into three groups, including CHD patients (withou

[A case of chromomycosis caused by Fonsecaea pedrosoi presenting as a small plaque on the left upper arm: a review of reported cases of dematiaceous fungal infection in Japan].

We report a case of a 67-year-old woman with chromomycosis on the left upper arm. The plaque was a very small, erythematous and scaly lesion with a diameter of 1.5 cm. Fonsecaea pedrosoi was isolated as the causal fungus, and a number of Phialophora type conidia, the formation of which is considered rare, were observed. Treatment involved surgical excision of the lesion with a 5 mm margin. Follow up three years later revealed no recurrence. In Japan, 536 patients with chromomycosis were reported from 1955 to 2004. This consisted of 296 cases from 1955 to 1981 as reported by Fukushiro, and 240

Molecular identification of black-grain mycetoma agents.

Black-grain mycetomas are subcutaneous devastating chronic infections due to several dematiaceous fungi. They are diagnosed mostly in tropical countries. Identification of these fungi with standard mycological procedures is difficult because of their poor or delayed sporulation. The aim of this study was thus to assess the accuracy of molecular identification of these fungi. A total of 54 strains, mostly of clinical origin, were used, including 15 Madurella mycetomatis, 6 Madurella grisea, 12 Leptosphaeria senegalensis, 4 Leptosphaeria tompkinsii, 6 Pyrenochaeta spp., 4 Curvularia lunata, and

Effects of different intercropping patterns on tea rhizosphere environment and leaf quality.

Intercropping can improve tea soils and leaf quality, but partner-specific responses remain unclear. We compared four systems-Paris polyphylla-tea (CT), leguminous green manure-tea (LF), Pleurotus ostreatus-tea (CJ), and Polygonatum kingianum-tea (HJ)-with matched monoculture controls. Tea and soil traits were integrated with high-throughput sequencing, LEfSe, PICRUSt2 functional prediction, and correlation analyses. LF significantly increased soil available and total phosphorus, enriched the potentially beneficial fungi Mortierella and Trichoderma in the tea rhizosphere, and enhanced the pred

Fungal Infections of Implantation: More Than Five Years of Cases of Subcutaneous Fungal Infections Seen at the UK Mycology Reference Laboratory.

Subcutaneous fungal infections, which typically result from traumatic introduction (implantation) of fungal elements into the skin or underlying tissues, can present as a range of different clinical entities including phaeohyphomycosis, chromoblastomycosis, subcutaneous nodules or masses, and genuine eumycetoma. Here, we mined our laboratory information management system for such infections in humans and domestic animals for the period 2016-2022, including (i) fungal isolates referred for identification and/or susceptibility testing; (ii) infections diagnosed at our laboratory using panfungal

Detection of Specific IgE against Molds Involved in Allergic Bronchopulmonary Mycoses in Patients with Cystic Fibrosis.

CONTEXT: Allergic bronchopulmonary mycoses (ABPM) can be due to molds other than Aspergillus fumigatus in patients with cystic fibrosis (pwCF). We aimed to develop immunoassays for the detection of specific IgE (sIgE) directed against five fungal species involved in ABPM: Aspergillus terreus, Scedosporium apiospermum, Lomentospora prolificans, Rasamsonia argillacea, and Exophiala dermatitidis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Serum samples (n = 356) from 238 pwCF, collected in eight CF care centers in France, Germany, and Italy, were analyzed by dissociated enhanced lanthanide fluorescent immunoassay (

Prevalence and diversity of filamentous fungi in the airways of cystic fibrosis patients - A Dutch, multicentre study.

BACKGROUND: Progressive lung injury in Cystic Fibrosis (CF) patients can lead to chronic colonization with bacteria and fungi. Fungal colonization is obtained from the environment which necessitates locally performed epidemiology studies. We prospectively analyzed respiratory samples of CF patients during a 3-year period, using a uniform fungal culture protocol, focusing on filamentous fungi and azole resistance in Aspergillus fumigatus. METHODS: Over a 3-year period, all respiratory specimens collected from CF patients in 5 Dutch CF centers, were analyzed. Samples were inoculated onto the fu

Clinical Relevance of Fungi in Cystic Fibrosis.

In cystic fibrosis, a new era has started with the approval and use of highly effective cystic fibrosis transport regulator (CFTR) modulator therapy. As pulmonary function is increasing and exacerbation rate significantly decreases, the current meaning of fungal pulmonary diseases is questioned. During the past couple of decades, several studies have been conducted regarding fungal colonization and infection of the airways in people with cystic fibrosis. Although Aspergillus fumigatus for filamentous fungi and Candida albicans for yeasts remain by far the most common fungal species in patients

Genome sequencing of Cladophialophora exuberans, a novel candidate for bioremediation of hydrocarbon and heavy metal polluted habitats.

Cladophialophora exuberans is a filamentous fungus related to black yeasts in the order Chaetothyriales. These melanized fungi are known for their 'dual ecology', often occurring in toxic environments and also being frequently involved in human infection. Particularly Cladophialophora exuberans, C. immunda, C. psammophila, and Exophiala mesophila have been described with a pronounced ability to degrade aromatic compounds and xenobiotic volatiles, such as benzene, toluene, ethyl-benzene, and xylene, and are candidates for bioremediation applications. The objective of the present study is the se

Dematiaceous fungi mimicking a conjunctival melanoma.

An 85-year-old, immunocompetent man was referred to the authors due to the presence of an enlarging, pigmented mass of the conjunctiva concerning for a conjunctival melanoma. Wide excision of the mass revealed a pigmented or "dematiaceous" fungus. He was treated with topical natamycin, and the lesion healed well without any evidence of recurrence. Dematiaceous fungi should be considered in the differential for pigmented conjunctival lesions.

Phagocytosis, production of nitric oxide and pro-inflammatory cytokines by macrophages in the presence of dematiaceous [correction of dematiaceus] fungi that cause chromoblastomycosis.

Chromoblastomycosis is characterized by the slow development of polymorphic skin lesions (nodules, verrucas, tumores, plaques and scar tissue). Inside the host, infectious propagules adhere to epithelial cells and differentiate into sclerotic forms, which effectively resist destruction by host effector cells and allow onset of chronic disease. A cellular immune response against fungi is essential to control infection. Amongst the cells of the immune system, macrophages play the most important role in controlling fungal growth. In this study, we show that the fungicidal characteristic of macrop

The ileal fungal microbiota is altered in Crohn's disease and is associated with the disease course.

INTRODUCTION: Fungal microbiota's involvement in the pathogenesis of Crohn's disease (CD) is incompletely understood. The terminal ileum is a predilection site both for primary involvement and recurrences of CD. We, therefore, assessed the mucosa-associated mycobiota in the inflamed and non-inflamed ileum in patients with CD. METHODS: The mucosa-associated mycobiota was assessed by ITS2 sequencing in a total of 168 biopsies sampled 5 and 15 cm proximal of the ileocecal valve or ileocolic anastomosis in 44 CD patients and 40 healthy controls (HC). CD patients with terminal ileitis, with endosc
