INTRODUCTION: Slaughter by exsanguination via ventral neck incision (SEVNI), as performed in religious slaughter, has been criticized on the grounds that carotid occlusion may impair exsanguination and potentially delay loss of consciousness (LOC), leading to unnecessary pain and distress. The objective of this review is to evaluate the literature specifically addressing the prevalence of carotid occlusions (CO) in SEVNI of cattle and the available evidence for their potential consequences on cerebral perfusion, cortical function, and inferred LOC.
METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Goog

The cardiac puncture technique for obtaining relatively large volume (50-150 µL) blood samples from sedated rodents has been used in research for nearly a century. Historically, its use to phlebotomize and then release live rodents was more common. However, recently its use in a non-terminal capacity frequently imparts negative connotations in part because exsanguination of sedated animals via cardiac puncture is now an American Veterinary Medical Association-approved euthanasia technique. This association has resulted in ethical concerns by manuscript reviewers and in a few instances, outrigh

INTRODUCTION: Exsanguination following trauma is potentially preventable. Extremity tourniquets have been successfully implemented in military and civilian prehospital care. Prehospital control of bleeding from the torso and junctional area's remains challenging but offers a great potential to improve survival rates. This review aims to provide an overview of potential treatment options in both clinical as preclinical state of research on truncal and junctional bleeding. Since many options have been developed for application in the military primarily, translation to the civilian situation is d

An important consideration in any terminal experiment is the method for euthanizing animals. Although the prime consideration is that the method is humane, some methods can have a dramatic impact on experimental outcomes. To determine the optimal method of euthanasia in metabolic experiments, a physical method (decapitation), two asphyxiation methods (CO2 and O2/CO2), and anesthetic (isoflurane) exposure followed by exsanguination were compared for their effects on liver metabolism. Changes in metabolism were monitored by following the activities of several key metabolic enzymes that are known

Stop the Bleed™, the education program created by the American College of Surgeons to address life-threatening bleeding, came from concepts of combat casualty care in tactical settings in the US military. Tourniquet control of exsanguinating extremity injuries dates from its first recorded use in the French military in the 17th century and its general issue to ships of the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars. Wound packing and pressure dressings, specifically in junctional sites and head and neck, also date from the 16th century, illustrating the priority of hemorrhage control throughout the

Evolution in extremity injury treatment often occurs during major conflicts, with lessons learned applied and translated among military and civilian settings. In recent periods of war, improvements in protective equipment, in-theater damage control resuscitation/surgery, delivery of antibiotics locally/systemically, and rapid evacuation to higher levels of medical care capabilities have greatly improved combat casualty survivability rates. Additionally, widespread application of lower extremity tourniquets also has prevented casualties from exsanguination, thus reducing hemorrhagic-related dea

Massive bleeding with coagulopathy and hemorrhagic shock poses a potential threat to life in numerous clinical settings. Optimal treatment including the prevention of exsanguination necessitates a standardized and interdisciplinary approach. Several studies have shown the importance of massive transfusion protocols and standardized coagulation algorithms to improve survival of severely bleeding patients and to avoid secondary complications. Thus, the Helsinki declaration for patient safety in anesthesiology demands the implementation of clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of patient

A child had a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube removed by transecting it at skin level. The internal portion ("the bolster") was allowed to pass in the GI tract. She subsequently had odynophagia. Magnetic resonance imaging identified a foreign body within the lower thoracic esophagus. During esophagoscopy, the bolster was removed. The following morning, she had massive hematemesis with cardiovascular collapse. As an emergent maneuver, an intra-aortic balloon was percutaneously deployed at the bedside without fluoroscopic guidance. This temporized the exsanguination. Subsequent intraope

BACKGROUND: We did a retrospective study of 62 patients with penetrating injuries of the iliac arteries.
METHODS: The cause of injury was gunshot wound in 85.5% and stabbing in 14.5%. The arterial repair was achieved by various means: lateral arteriorrhaphy, end-to-end anastomosis, and polytetrafluoroethylene interposition grafts.
RESULTS: There was a 42% mortality rate from exsanguination or secondary coagulopathy directly related to the arterial injury. Persistent shock, resuscitative thoracotomy, free intraperitoneal hemorrhage, and the number of vascular injuries were directly related to

In a group of 212 patients with germinal tumours of the testicle treated at the urological clinic in Hradec Králové in 1975-1987 there were 7 with an extragonadal tumour in the retroperitoneum. In all the dominating symptom was a palpable resistance in the epigastrium, backache and secondary signs of malignant disease. In the first four a radical extirpation of the tumour was performed, in one with replacement of the aorta always with left nephrectomy. After introduction of cisplatinum into combined chemotherapy this became the initial treatment. Of the seven patients two died from generalizat

The cerebrovascular response of newborn animals to hypotension has not been defined on a regional basis. Using an autoradiographic technique employing 14C-iodoantipyrine as indicator, we studied the cerebral physiological responses of newborn dogs to hypotension induced by exsanguination or by administration of Escherichia coli endotoxin. Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) to all gray matter structures was preserved, even at mean arterial pressures as low as 20 mm Hg. In contrast, rCBF to periventricular and occipital white matter decreased significantly during severe hypotension. The selecti

The effects of standardized blood loss on the platelets, as well as on coagulation, fibrinolysis and complement parameters were studied in the pig. A simultaneous fall in arterial and venous platelet counts was demonstrated during the initial phase of blood loss, with a concomitat rise in pulmonary vascular resistance. After exsanguination to the extent of about 40% of the blood volume, the arterial platelet counts increased significantly, whilst the pulmonary vascular resistance, which was negatively correlated with the arterial platelet counts throughout the experiment, fell. Venous platelet

We present a case of a term neonate with hypovolemic shock after spontaneous vaginal delivery. Hemodynamic instability persisted despite resuscitation with packed red cells, fresh frozen plasma, and platelets. An ultrasound scan at 48 hours after birth followed by a computed tomographic scan demonstrated a splenic lesion and hemoperitoneum. She underwent an emergency laparotomy and splenectomy for splenic rupture. Histologic findings demonstrated a ruptured cavernous hemangioma of the spleen. Exsanguinating intraabdominal hemorrhage in the newborn infant is rare. The diagnosis and management,

A very rare diagnosis before a terminal hemorrhagic accident, aorto-esophageal fistula (FAO) is almost always fatal. Three cases of this exceptional lesion are reported. The first patient died within a few minutes of admission from a cataclysmic hematemesis. This 52 year old man had a recurring adenocarcinoma of the cardia that had been treated by laser. A "premonitory hematemesis" of bright red blood had occurred eight hours before admission. In the two other cases the problem arose with an "open abdomen" in exsanguinated patients operated upon as emergencies for massive hematemesis. In both

Vasa previa is a condition where unprotected fetal vessels, neither by placenta nor umbilical cord, lie within the membranes over the internal cervical ostium and beneath the presenting part of the fetus. Due to this condition, the membranous vessels pose a higher risk of being compressed or ruptures and could lead to fetal demise, exsanguination, or even fetal death. In this case report, we reported a case of a 36-year-old woman, G3P2A0, at term gestation and oblique lie. Early prenatal diagnosis using transvaginal ultrasound could increase the survival rate of the fetus if followed by suffic

Redo sternotomy and complex redo surgery to replace the ascending aorta and the aortic hemiarch in the presence of an aortocutaneous fistula presents a unique technical challenge to prevent exsanguination upon chest re-entry and organ (particularly cerebral) ischemia during circulatory arrest. Meticulous preoperative planning, peripheral cardiopulmonary bypass, moderate hypothermic circulatory arrest before chest re-entry, and apical left ventricular venting were the cornerstones of our successful surgical approach. Adjunctive selective unilateral antegrade cerebral perfusion extended the safe

Anastomotic site pseudoaneurysm following renal transplantation is a rare vascular complication. Its etiology include defective suture techniques and infections. The clinical presentation includes allograft dysfunction, local mass effect, exsanguination, and rupture. Open surgical repair is associated with significant morbidity and allograft dysfunction. Endovascular stent-graft can be a less invasive, alternative approach. We describe a case of large pseudoaneurysm arising from the internal iliac artery in a post-renal transplant patient. It was successfully treated with the stent-graft. The

Euthanasia of laboratory animals must be performed by trained personnel using appropriate techniques, equipment, and reagents in order to effect a death that is humane and satisfies research requirements. Acceptable methods of euthanasia are painless or minimize distress, and are quick and easy to perform, safe for those performing the procedure, and efficient and economic. They are aesthetically acceptable and are done in the absence of other animals. In addition, these methods do not result in gross histological or histochemical changes that would adversely affect research results. This unit

Lower lumbar disc surgery is an extremely common operation from which vascular complications are reported rarely. However vascular injury can occur with perforation of the anterior longitudinal ligament. External haemorrhage is uncommon and the true cause of the patient's hypotension may be misdiagnosed. If the hypotension is severe or prolonged laparotomy is indicated, to prevent exsanguination and to effect a repair of the vascular injury. Alternatively, if the injury is missed, an arteriovenous fistula may develop; this diagnosis may be delayed for months or years. One case of severe haemor
