Treating repetitive suicidal intrusions using eye movements: study protocol for a multicenter randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a major public health problem, and it remains unclear which processes link suicidal ideation and plans to the act of suicide. Growing evidence shows that the majority of suicidal patients diagnosed with major depression or bipolar disorder report repetitive suicide-related images and thoughts (suicidal intrusions). Various studies showed that vividness of negative as well as positive intrusive images may be reduced by dual task (e.g. eye movements) interventions taxing the working memory. We propose that a dual task intervention may also reduce frequency and intensity of

Frontliners narratives: qualitative insights into EMDR group therapy during COVID-19.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic raised unprecedented challenges for frontline healthcare workers and emergency volunteers, leading to significant psychological distress. To address these issues, EMDR-IGTP (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing-Integrative Group Treatment Protocol) was proposed as a trauma-focused group intervention. Although its efficacy is widely documented, little is known, from a qualitative perspective, about the experiences of frontliners who underwent this treatment during the pandemic. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the experiences of frontline prof

Targeted memory reactivation to augment treatment in post-traumatic stress disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder with traumatic memories at its core. Post-treatment sleep may offer a unique time window to increase therapeutic efficacy through consolidation of therapeutically modified traumatic memories. Targeted memory reactivation (TMR) enhances memory consolidation by presenting reminder cues (e.g., sounds associated with a memory) during sleep. Here, we applied TMR in PTSD patients to strengthen therapeutic memories during sleep after one treatment session with eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). PTSD patients received e

Drug Use in Street Sex worKers (DUSSK) study: results of a mixed methods feasibility study of a complex intervention to reduce illicit drug use in drug dependent female sex workers.

OBJECTIVES: The majority of female street-based sex workers (SSWs) are dependent on illicit drugs and sell sex to fund their drug use. They typically face multiple traumatic experiences, starting at a young age, which continue through sex work involvement. Their trauma-related symptoms tend to increase when drug use is reduced, hindering sustained reduction. Providing specialist trauma care to address post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) alongside drug treatment may therefore improve treatment outcomes. Aims to (1) evaluate recruitment and retention of participants; (2) examine intervention e

Pacing in posttraumatic stress disorder therapy: A meta-regression of treatment frequency and completion rates.

The present study utilized posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) clinical trials repository data to analyze associations between treatment frequency (i.e., weekly or more than weekly) and completion outcomes across cognitive processing therapy (CPT), prolonged exposure (PE), and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). Covariates included treatment type, interactions between treatment type and treatment frequency, total number of treatment sessions, mean age, and study-level risk of bias. All studies that met the eligibility criteria were included with CPT, PE, and EMDR in a second

Childhood sexual abuse in first-episode psychosis: The relevance in cognitive bias.

Cognitive biases and childhood trauma have been associated with psychotic outcomes; however, the combined effect of these two variables on psychosis has been minimally explored. This study investigates differences in cognitive biases and the presence of sexual abuse between people with first episode of psychosis (FEP) and healthy controls and explores the relationship between childhood sexual abuse and cognitive biases in individuals with FEP, controlling for sociodemographic and clinical confounders. A sample of 85 FEP patients and 87 healthy controls were assessed using the Spanish version o

Differential Effects of Comorbid Psychiatric Disorders on Treatment Outcome in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder from Childhood Trauma.

Patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) frequently have comorbid diagnoses such as major depressive disorder (MDD) and anxiety disorders (AD). Studies into the impact of these comorbidities on the outcome of PTSD treatment have yielded mixed results. The different treatments investigated in these studies might explain the varied outcome. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of these comorbidities on the outcome of two specific PTSD treatments. MDD and AD were analyzed as predictors and moderators in a trial comparing 12 sessions of either eye movement desensitization

Post-traumatic stress disorder and substance use disorder in individuals with mild intellectual disability or borderline intellectual functioning: A review of treatment studies.

Individuals with mild intellectual disability or borderline intellectual functioning (MID-BIF; IQ 50-85) are at high risk for developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorders (SUD). In individuals without MID-BIF, Seeking Safety (SeSa) is found to be effective in treating PTSD and SUD simultaneously. However, little is known about integrated treatment of PTSD and SUD in individuals with MID-BIF. This review aims to provide an overview of studies about this type of triple psychopathology, as well as PTSD or SUD in individuals with MID-BIF (i.e. dual diagnosis). No st

Primum non nocere (first do no harm): symptom worsening and improvement in female assault victims after prolonged exposure for PTSD.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged Exposure (PE) therapy is an efficacious treatment for PTSD; despite this, many clinicians do not utilize it due to concerns it could cause patient decompensation. METHOD: Data were pooled from four published well-controlled studies of female assault survivors with chronic PTSD (n = 361) who were randomly assigned to PE, waitlist (WL), or another psychotherapy, including cognitive processing therapy (CPT), Eye Movement and Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), or the combination of PE plus stress inoculation training (SIT) or PE plus cognitive restructuring. Depressive symptom severity and treatment outcome in posttraumatic stress disorder following childhood trauma: A secondary analysis of a randomized clinical trial.

Depressive symptoms are frequently comorbid with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), yet it remains unclear whether depressive symptom severity before the start of treatment affects the results of trauma-focused psychotherapy. We hypothesized that baseline depressive symptom severity might reduce overall PTSD symptom improvement and could differentially affect treatment response to imagery rescripting (ImRs) versus eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). This secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial included 150 adults with childhood trauma-related PTSD. Participants

Augmentation of EMDR with multifocal transcranial current stimulation (MtCS) in the treatment of fibromyalgia: study protocol of a double-blind randomized controlled exploratory and pragmatic trial.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a generalized, widespread chronic pain disorder affecting 2.7% of the general population. In recent years, different studies have observed a strong association between FM and psychological trauma. Therefore, a trauma-focused psychotherapy, such as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), combined with a non-invasive brain stimulation technique, such as multifocal transcranial current stimulation (MtCS), could be an innovative adjunctive treatment option. This double-blind randomized controlled trial (RCT) analyzes if EMDR therapy is effective in th
