Induced motion is the false impression that physically stationary objects move when in the presence of other objects that really move. In this study, we investigated this motion illusion in the depth dimension. We raised three related questions, as follows: (1) What cues in the stimulus are responsible for this motion illusion in depth? (2) Is the size of this illusion affected by vergence eye movements? And (3) are the effects of eye movements different for motion in depth and for motion in the frontoparallel plane? To answer these questions, we measured the point of subjective stationarity.

Eye movements are thought to account for a number of visual motion illusions involving stationary objects presented against a featureless background or apparent motion of the whole visual field. We tested two different versions of the eye movement account: (a) the retinal slip explanation and (b) the nystagmus-suppression explanation, in particular their ability to account for visual motion experienced during vibration of the neck muscles, and for the visual motion aftereffect following vibration. We vibrated the neck (ventral sternocleidomastoid muscles, bilaterally, or right dorsal muscles)

We conducted a two-year follow-up study of 40 patients with MS in whom we had reported that abnormal eye movements (AEM) were associated with greater general disability. AEM patients (17/40) remained significantly (p < .001) more disabled (median EDSS of 7.0) than those with normal eye movements (median EDSS of 5.0). AEM and great disability were associated with abnormal MRI signals in brainstem or cerebellum, where disease may involve control circuits for eye movements as well as descending motor pathways.

PURPOSE: Fixation durations are normally adapted to the difficulty of the foveal analysis task. We examine to what extent artificial central and peripheral visual field defects interfere with this adaptation process.
METHODS: Subjects performed a visual search task while their eye movements were registered. The latter were used to drive a real-time gaze-dependent display that was used to create artificial central and peripheral visual field defects. Recorded eye movements were used to determine saccadic amplitude, number of fixations, fixation durations, return saccades, and changes in saccad

BACKGROUND: A complex partial seizure can cause a variety of visual system signs and symptoms, including visual hallucinations, dilated pupils, and changes in vision. Little information is known about the influence of this disorder on the visual system during nonseizure moments. This case report examines the unusual eye movements-during these nonseizure times-of a patient diagnosed with complex partial seizure disorder.
CASE REPORT: An 8-year-old boy was referred to the clinic by his pediatric neurologist for a comprehensive examination to rule out a visual cause for the abnormal eye movement

Recent studies of eye movements in reading and other information processing tasks, such as music reading, typing, visual search, and scene perception, are reviewed. The major emphasis of the review is on reading as a specific example of cognitive processing. Basic topics discussed with respect to reading are (a) the characteristics of eye movements, (b) the perceptual span, (c) integration of information across saccades, (d) eye movement control, and (e) individual differences (including dyslexia). Similar topics are discussed with respect to the other tasks examined. The basic theme of the re

In the last few years, we have studied ocular reflexes caused by tilting stimulations in test subjects placed in an upright sitting position on a chair apparatus which tilts continuously. In healthy persons, a weak nystagmus can be observed, and involves a nystagmus of minor amplitude and showing a small number of beats. The actual incidence of nystagmus in the younger group was minimal, but it tended to increase with age. This occurrence is considered to be due to age-related degeneration of the otolithic organ. Patients with vertigo and/or dizziness clearly develop nystagmus. These responses

Smooth pursuit eye movements were studied in three patients with alcoholic Korsakoff's syndrome, one with Wernicke's encephalopathy, and an age-matched control. Horizontal smooth pursuit eye movements were abnormal in all patients: peak eye velocity and the ability to sustain smooth eye velocity were reduced. Also, smooth pursuit gain began to decrease at relatively low target velocities (i.e., 8-10 degrees). These data demonstrate a severe disturbance in smooth pursuit function long after the clinically apparent oculomotor abnormalities have passed.

BACKGROUND: Clinical studies indicate that sedation with propofol is associated with loss of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, whereas animal experiments suggest that propofol anesthesia may be functionally equivalent to naturally occurring sleep. However, most preclinical studies of propofol's effects on sleep have used sedative doses in young animals, despite the frequent use of high doses in the operating room and the increased susceptibility of older individuals to sleep disturbances. Here, we investigated how surgical levels of propofol anesthesia affect sleep in aged mice. We hypothesized

The cause of ultradian oscillations in the secretion of glucagon and insulin with a period length between 70-140 min has been atttributed to feedback mechanisms of glucose and insulin. Influences of the central nervous system on these ultradian glucagon and insulin oscillations remained to be elucidated. In the present study on one occasion, concentrations of glucose, glucagon, insulin, and GH were determined at 15-min intervals from 2100-0700 h in 16 healthy subjects while they were infused with saline solution. On another occasion, concentrations of these hormones during nocturnal sleep were

Active vision relies on different forms of eye movements that require the usage of different spatial coordinate systems for successful vision. This is often overlooked in visual psychophysics, when tasks are performed under fixation only, inherently confounding retinal and real-world coordinates. Here we investigated whether the psychophysical principle of luminance integration across time generalizes to smooth pursuit eye movements and in which spatial coordinate system integration operates. In Experiment 1, participants smoothly tracked a moving object, and two brief liminal luminance target

Eye movements enable visual information gathering and stabilize gaze via optokinetic (OKR) and vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) pathways. 1 Echolocating bats, despite their rapid and agile flight maneuvers to land upside down and navigate 3D space, have long been thought not to move their eyes, an assumption originating from Walls's influential assertion over 80 years ago 2 but never tested with empirical measurements. Here we present quantitative analysis of eye movements driven by visual and vestibular signals in Seba's short-tailed bat ( Carollia perspicillata ). Bats generated robust visually

During visual mental imagery, our eyes tend to reproduce patterns of movement similar to those observed in visual perception, even in the absence of external stimuli. However, imagery vividness varies along a spectrum, with congenital aphantasia at the lower extreme, where individuals report a reduced or absent ability to visualize voluntarily. Nevertheless, they can typically state from memory that Bordeaux is to the left of Paris on a map of France while denying having conjured any mental image. What cognitive mechanisms underlie this dissociation? Some theories suggest aphantasia stems from

Numerous studies across species emphasize the importance of theta oscillations within medial temporal lobe (MTL) regions, such as the hippocampus, in relation to memory. In rodents, physical movement strongly influences theta activity, while this relationship remains more ambiguous in primates. This disparity could stem from the increased reliance on visual search in primates during navigation. To explore this, we analyzed intracranial electroencephalographic (iEEG) activity from the human MTL recorded simultaneously with body and eye movements during ambulatory navigation. We found that MTL t

Response preparation is accomplished by gradual accumulation in neural activity until a threshold is reached. In humans, such a preparatory signal, referred to as the lateralized readiness potential (LRP), can be observed in the EEG over sensorimotor cortical areas before execution of a voluntary movement. Although well described for manual movements, less is known about preparatory EEG potentials for saccadic eye movements in humans and nonhuman primates. Hence, we describe a LRP over the frontolateral cortex in macaque monkeys. Homologous to humans, we observed lateralized electrical potenti

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the characteristics and occurrence frequencies of rapid eye movements (REMs) during REM sleep in movement disorders.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to detect and characterize REMs during polysomnographically defined REM sleep as recorded by electro-oculography (EOG) in 12 patients with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), 13 patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and 12 healthy controls.
METHODS: Using a modified EOG montage, we developed an algorithm that automatically detects and characterizes REMs during REM sleep based on their presumptive saccad

As the world's population ages, Alzheimer's disease is currently the seventh most common cause of death globally; the burden is anticipated to increase, especially among middle-class and elderly persons. Artificial intelligence-based algorithms that work well in hospital environments can be used to identify Alzheimer's disease. A number of databases were searched for English- language articles published up until March 1, 2024, that examined the relationships between artificial intelligence techniques, eye movements, and Alzheimer's disease. A novel non-invasive method called eye movement analy

INTRODUCTION: Subtle abnormalities in the preclinical stage of Huntington's Disease (HD) can be detected using saccadic eye movement assessment reflecting disease progression. This study was aimed to evaluate abnormalities in saccade parameters in asymptomatic carriers and symptomatic HD patients at various stages of HD.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study enrolled 104 participants, including 14 asymptomatic carriers of HTT mutations, 44 symptomatic HD patients, and 46 control subjects. HD severity was measured using the Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale Total Motor Score (UHDRS-TMS) and
