Exploring the impact of unpredictability of household resources on infant attention.

Early environmental unpredictability has been linked to variation in cognitive and socioemotional development, yet its role in shaping foundational attentional processes during infancy remains poorly understood. The present study examined whether unpredictability in household resources is associated with individual differences in visual attention during the first year of life. A sociodemographically diverse sample of 160 infants aged 3-12 months completed a remotely administered free-viewing visual attention task. Infant eye-gaze behavior was assessed using webcam-based eye-tracking, yielding

Investigating How Brain Stimulation Mitigates Motion Sickness Using Spatiotemporal Nystagmus Parameters Captured in VR.

Mitigating motion sickness with non-invasive cortical vestibular brain stimulation (vBS) is promising because it does not require redesigning VR content or altering the motion profile of a moving platform. Instead, it aims to enhance individuals' intrinsic resistance to motion sickness. However, the mechanism underlying its online efficacy remains unclear (Here, "online efficacy" means the observed motion sickness reduction during vBS not before or after vBS). Motivated by lower motion sickness susceptibility observed in congenital nystagmus patients, we hypothesized that reductions in motion

Cortico-Ocular Coupling Analysis for Developmental and Behavioral Disorders: A Review.

Developmental and behavioral disorders (DBD) have a significant impact on children's neurological activity and behavioral performance. Early diagnosis and treatment are known to be beneficial for improving DBD outcomes, yet existing unimodal neurophysiological assessment tools for DBD yield significant heterogeneity in results, highlighting the urgent need for exploring novel assessment tools. Cortico-ocular coupling (COC) refers to the information interaction between the cerebral cortex and eyes, and COC analysis is a technique for quantitatively measuring the correlation of neural oscillatio

A retinal detachment based strabismus detection through FEDCNN.

Ocular strabismus, a common condition in the present generation is an absolute risk factor for amblyopia and blinding premorbid visual loss. Despite the availability of new optometry tools with eye-tracking data, the issues persist in attaining accuracy and reliability in diagnosing strabismus. These two concerns are specifically accommodated in this study by the proposed novel approach that involves CNNs with eye-tracking datasets from subjects. The presented work aims to improve the accuracy of diagnostics in ophthalmology utilizing the integration of the further proposed algorithms into an

Insights into Rett Syndrome girls' receptive vocabulary through eye movements and parental perception.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the receptive vocabulary of girls diagnosed with Rett Syndrome (RS) by employing eye-tracking technology and examined how these objective measures compared with parents' perceptions of their daughters' language abilities. METHOD: Fourteen girls with RS and eleven typically developing peers participated. Instruments included the Kerr Scale, a parental questionnaire on communication skills, the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test - PPVT-4, and eye-tracking equipment. The PPVT-4's initial 12 cards, each displaying four images, were presented on screen for 5 s for the

The use of machine learning to understand the role of visual attention in multi-attribute choice.

Whether eye movements (as a measure of visual attention) contribute to the understanding of how multi-attribute decisions are made, is still a matter of debate. In this study, we show how machine learning methods can be used to separate the effects of the information presented, eye movement patterns, and attention to specific information. We also show how to deal with data from a relatively small sample of participants, often found in eye tracking studies that require in-lab testing. We make use of a dataset of 30 females who decided whether or not to accept screening for Chlamydia in 21 diffe

An eye-tracking-based Stroop test: an efficient method for evaluating frontal lobe function.

INTRODUCTION: Assessing attention and frontal lobe function is essential for diagnosing dementia. The Stroop test is widely used for these purposes, and its validity and reliability have been verified. Nevertheless, test-related burdens and procedural complexity have prevented their use as a screening tool. We developed a novel Stroop test using eye-tracking technology and evaluated its validity and utility in a clinical setting. METHODS: The study included 97 older adults at a memory clinic. Participants completed both the eye-tracking-based and conventional paper-based Stroop tests, along w

Attentional bias toward one's own body: A systematic review of eye-tracking studie.

Body dissatisfaction is prevalent and central to eating disorders. Cognitive-behavioral and sociocultural models suggest that maladaptive body-related schemas may bias visual attention toward one's own body. Eye-tracking provides a spatially precise method for quantifying gaze allocation, yet findings remain fragmented across populations and paradigms. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we systematically reviewed 33 eye-tracking studies examining region-level visual attention to one's own body in eating disorder, subclinical, and nonclinical samples. Across paradigms, participants often allocat

Cognate facilitation in different-script trilinguals as a function of task demands.

The present study examined how Arabic-Hebrew-English trilinguals process double and triple cognate words in their third language (L3) across three different experiments. Utilizing the same set of critical cognate items, trilinguals completed a semantic relatedness task, a lexical decision task, or a sentence reading eye-tracking task. The results revealed a significant cognate facilitation effect in the semantic relatedness task, with no consistent differences in the magnitude of facilitation across double and triple cognates, suggesting that both L1 and L2 are activated during L3 processing.

Reduced perceptual span in dyslexic children: a gaze-contingent eye-tracking study.

INTRODUCTION: In typically developing 9-year-olds, the perceptual span-the region of text from which useful information is extracted during a single eye fixation-extends up to seven characters to the right of fixation. This parafoveal preview supports fluent reading by facilitating saccade planning and lexical preprocessing. However, the perceptual span in children with dyslexia remains undocumented, and findings in adults are inconsistent. While theoretical models suggest a reduced span in dyslexia, this study offers the first experimental test of this hypothesis in children. METHODS: 14 dys

Exploring the neurofunctional impairments and cognitive biases concerning food and body related stimuli in anorexia nervosa: An integrated EEG and eye-tracking study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) exhibit significant cognitive and neural disturbances compared to healthy individuals when processing food and body-related stimuli. These disturbances not only contribute to the manifestation and chronification of their pathological eating behaviour but also underscore the complex interplay of cognitive, emotional, and neurobiological factors in AN. However, the precise underlying cognitive and neural mechanisms of these disturbances remain a compelling area of investigation. METHODS: This study presents a protocol developed for conducting a cr

Attention Biases for Eating Disorder-Related Stimuli Versus Social Stimuli in Adolescents with Anorexia Nervosa - An Eye-Tracking Study.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is characterized by attention biases for eating disorder-related information as well as altered attentional processing of social information. However, little is known about the interplay between the altered attentional processing of these two types of information. The present study investigates attention biases for eating disorder-related information (pictures of bodies) versus social information (pictures of faces), in adolescents with AN. Attention biases were assessed via eye-tracking during a passive-viewing task in which female bodies and faces were presented simulta
