Impaired Recognition of Facially Expressed Emotions in Different Groups of Patients with Sleep Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Recently it has been shown that acute sleep loss has a direct impact on emotional processing in healthy individuals. Here we studied the effect of chronically disturbed sleep on emotional processing by investigating two samples of patients with sleep disorders. METHODS: 25 patients with psychophysiologic insomnia (23 women and 2 men, mean age: 51.6 SD; 10.9 years), 19 patients with sleep apnea syndrome (4 women and 15 men, mean age: 51.9; SD 11.1) and a control sample of 24 subjects with normal sleep (15 women and 9 men, mean age 45.3; SD 8.8) completed a Facial Expressed Emotio

The effects of different attentional demands in the identification of emotional facial expressions in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the progressive impairment of mental and emotional functions, including the processing of emotional facial expression (EFE). Deficits in decoding EFE are relevant in social contexts in which information from 2 or more sources may be processed simultaneously. To assess the role of contextual stimuli on EFE processing in AD, we analyzed the ability of patients with AD and healthy elderly adults to identify EFE when simultaneously performing another task. Each of the 6 basic EFEs was presented to 15 patients with AD and 35 controls in a dual task parad

Recognizing identity in the face of change: the development of an expression-independent representation of facial identity.

Perceptual aftereffects have indicated that there is an asymmetry in the extent to which adults' representations of identity and expression are independent of one another. Their representation of expression is identity-dependent; the magnitude of expression aftereffects is reduced when the adaptation and test stimuli have different identities. In contrast, their representation of identity is expression-independent; the magnitude of identity aftereffects is independent of whether the adaptation and test stimuli pose the same expressions. Like adults, children's representation of expression is i

The functional correlates of face perception and recognition of emotional facial expressions as evidenced by fMRI.

Recognition and processing of emotional facial expression are crucial for social behavior and employ higher-order cognitive and visual working processes. In neuropsychiatric disorders, impaired emotion recognition most frequently concerned three specific emotions, i.e., anger, fear, and disgust. As incorrect processing of (neutral) facial stimuli per se might also underlie deficits in the recognition of emotional facial expressions, we aimed to assess all these aspects in one experiment. We therefore report here a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) paradigm for parallel assessment of

Autonomic responses to dynamic displays of facial expressions in adolescents and adults with Williams syndrome.

The behavioral phenotype characteristic of Williams syndrome (WS) is marked by strong interest in social interaction, manifested in attention to human faces, empathy, approach behavior and social disinhibition, often coexisting with generalized anxiety. Despite their heightened social interest, people with WS show deficits in explicit emotion recognition tasks similar to those of people with other developmental disabilities. In the current study we explored whether individuals with WS show distinctive autonomic responsiveness to social-emotional information, using skin conductance response and

Gender differences influence brain's beta oscillatory responses in recognition of facial expressions.

There are only few studies describing gender differences in recognition of facial expressions. Our study has the aim to analyze the effect of gender differences in oscillatory brain responses. Three sets of Ekman and Friesens's facial expressions (neutral, angry, and happy) were presented to 26 healthy subjects (13 men) while recording from 13 different scalp locations. Occipital beta response (15-24Hz) was significantly larger for women than for men during the presentation of face expressions. Our results demonstrate that processing of emotional face expressions clearly differs between men an

Perception of emotional facial expressions at different intensities in early-symptomatic Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: While there is abundant evidence that patients with Huntington's disease (HD) have an impairment in the recognition of the emotional facial expression of disgust, previous studies have only examined emotion perception using full-blown facial expressions. OBJECTIVE: The current study examines the perception of facial emotional expressions in HD at different levels of intensity to investigate whether more subtle deficits can be detected, possible also in other emotions. METHOD: We compared early symptomatic HD patients with healthy matched controls on emotion perception, presenting

Facial expressiveness in patients with schizophrenia compared to depressed patients and nonpatient comparison subjects.

OBJECTIVE: Blunted affect is a major symptom in schizophrenia, and affective deficits clinically encompass deficits in expressiveness. Emotion research and ethological studies have shown that patients with schizophrenia are impaired in various modalities of expressiveness (posed and spontaneous emotion expressions, coverbal gestures, and smiles). Similar deficits have been described in depression, but comparative studies have brought mixed results. Our aim was to study and compare facial expressive behaviors related to affective deficits in patients with schizophrenia, depressed patients, and

Enhanced neural activity in response to dynamic facial expressions of emotion: an fMRI study.

Dynamic facial expressions of emotion constitute natural and powerful media of communication between individuals. However, little is known about the neural substrate underlying the processing of dynamic facial expressions of emotion. We depicted the brain areas by using fMRI with 22 right-handed healthy subjects. The facial expressions are dynamically morphed from neutral to fearful or happy expressions. Two types of control stimuli were presented: (i) static facial expressions, which provided sustained fearful or happy expressions, and (ii) dynamic mosaic images, which provided dynamic inform

Signal characteristics of spontaneous facial expressions: automatic movement in solitary and social smiles.

The assumption that the smile is an evolved facial display suggests that there may be universal features of smiling in addition to the basic facial configuration. We show that smiles include not only a stable configuration of features, but also temporally consistent movement patterns. In spontaneous smiles from two social contexts, duration of lip corner movement during the onset phase was independent of social context and the presence of other facial movements, including dampening. These additional movements produced variation in both peak and offset duration. Both onsets and offsets had dyna

Cosmetic denervation of the muscles of facial expression with botulinum toxin. A dose-response study.

BACKGROUND: Botulinum toxin has been used for facial hemispasm, strabismus, and blepharospasm. Recently it has been advocated to treat the frown lines. We have extended this program to treatment of other muscles of facial expression. METHODS: Botulinum toxin is injected into the muscles of facial expression in two or three sessions to produce a temporary loss of muscle tone. A standard method of cooling, injection, and compression was developed to minimize pain and bruising. OBJECTIVE: To complete a dose-response study to document the optimum timing and amount of toxin needed for each muscle

[Recognition of conventional and emotional facial expressions in patients with cortical lesions (author's transl)].

Recognition of facial expressions was studied in a group of patients with cortical lesions. The test which was used consists in designating 30 expressions upon verbal command. Fifteen items had an emotional characteristic, and fifteen had a conventional characteristic (with an intentional communicative aspect). Results showed that right hemisphere patients had a elective deficit for emotional expressions. Left hemisphere patients had a elective deficit for conventional expressions. Analysis of correlations with associated clinical deficits showed further, that the deficit was associated, in ri

Causing a robot to display happy but not sad facial expression leads to sensory attenuation.

Sensory events resulting from our own actions typically evoke weaker neural responses than externally generated events, a phenomenon known as sensory attenuation. Whether this attenuation also occurs in social contexts-when the outcome of one's action is a reaction of an interaction partner, such as an emotional expression, remains unclear. This EEG study investigated whether causing a humanoid robot (iCub) to display emotional facial expressions leads to sensory attenuation in early visual processing, and whether emotional valence modulates this effect. Participants either chose an object to

Monkeys integrate facial expressions and direct gaze to modulate gaze-following behavior.

For humans, being looked at directly can boost our readiness to follow another's gaze, but can monkeys invite an observer to engage with them in the same way? We trained three rhesus macaques on a head gaze-following task in which the portrait of a demonstrator monkey would face the viewer before turning to look at a distinct spatial target. The demonstrator could face the viewer with their eyes opened or closed and display different facial expressions. Unlike in humans, we found that direct gaze alone, devoid of an accompanying specific expression failed to influence the latency of the subseq

Preliminary evidence of kinematic overlap in posed, but not spontaneous, facial expressions of fear and surprise.

Recognizing facial expressions is a fundamental aspect of social communication, yet certain emotions are frequently confused, particularly fear and surprise. Across two studies, we examined the production and recognition of these expressions. Our findings indicate that fear is more often misclassified as surprise when expressions are posed rather than spontaneous. Using fine-grained three-dimensional motion capture, we analysed the dynamic features of facial movement and showed that posed expressions of fear and surprise share highly similar kinematic profiles, which may account for their freq

Facial expression analysis to uncover the relationship between sialorrhea and hypomimia in Parkinson's disease.

Sialorrhea, or excessive drooling, is a prevalent yet frequently under-recognized non-motor symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD). Hypomimia, or reduced facial expressivity, constitutes another significant feature of PD. Although previous studies have suggested a potential clinical association between these two disease features, this relationship has seldom been quantified using artificial intelligence (AI) methodologies. In this study, we sought to characterize the association between hypomimia and sialorrhea in PD using both traditional clinical scales and AI-based video analysis. We conducted

In Vitro Diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease Based on Facial Expression and Behavioral Gait Data.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by incurable, rapid progression, and severe disability, severely impacting the lives of patients and their families. With an aging population, the need for early detection of PD is increasing. In vitro diagnosis has attracted attention because of its non-invasiveness and low cost, but there are some problems with the existing methods: 1) facial expression diagnosis has little training data; 2) gait diagnosis requires specialized equipment and acquisition environment, which is poorly generalizable; 3) a single modality is easy to miss the diagnosis; and

The impact of orthodontic-surgical treatment on facial expressions-a four-dimensional clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this clinical trial was to compare facial expressions (magnitude, shape change, time, and symmetry) before (T0) and after (T1) orthognathic surgery by implementing a novel method of four-dimensional (4D) motion capture analysis, known as videostereophotogrammetry, in orthodontics. METHODS: This prospective, single-centre, single-arm trial included a total of 26 adult patients (mean age 28.4 years; skeletal class II: n = 13, skeletal class III: n = 13) with indication for orthodontic-surgical treatment. Two reproducible facial expressions (maximum smile, lip purse)
