Diphenylpiperazines enhance regeneration after facial nerve injury.

Immature rat facial motoneurons are very sensitive to injury with nearly 80% dying during the first week after axotomy. This motoneuron death is apoptotic, similar to that induced in neurons after tropic factor withdrawal. The diphenylpiperazines, flunarizine and cinnarizine, protect dorsal root ganglion neurons from death after withdrawal of trophic support, i.e., nerve growth factor withdrawal, in vitro. Similarly, the monoamine oxidase inhibitor, deprenyl, promotes survival of facial motoneurons after axotomy. These pharmacological agents were assessed both alone and in combination for thei

Misidentification delusions, facial misrecognition, and right brain injury.

Individuals suffering from misidentification syndromes may present with right hemispheric pathology and deficits in facial recognition. In addition, misidentification delusions have been associated with aggressive behaviour. The possible linkage between misidentification phenomena, facial recognition, and aggression is discussed, illustrated by the case of a patient suffering from an organic delusional disorder.

Facial Nerve Repair following Acute Nerve Injury.

Background  Acute facial nerve iatrogenic or traumatic injury warrants rapid management with the goal of reestablishing nerve continuity within 72 hours. However, reconstructive efforts should be performed up to 12 months from the time of injury since facial musculature may still be viable and thus facial tone and function may be salvaged. Methods  Data of all patients who underwent facial nerve repair following iatrogenic or traumatic injury were retrospectively collected and assessed. Paralysis etiology, demographics, operative data, postoperative course, and outcome were examined. Results

Sparking the Debate: Facial Injury Patterns from Fireworks.

The objective of this article is to estimate the incidence, injury patterns, and demographics of patients presenting to emergency departments (EDs) for facial injury sustained from fireworks. This was an analysis of a nationwide database. The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) was evaluated for facial injuries from fireworks from 2013 to 2017. Relevant entries were examined for incidence, patient characteristics, location of injury, and type of injury. There were 509 NEISS entries, extrapolating to an estimated 19,816 ED visits for head and neck injuries due to fireworks fr

A Mouse Model of Dysphagia After Facial Nerve Injury.

OBJECTIVE: Dysphagia is common following facial nerve injury; however, research is sparse regarding swallowing-related outcomes and targeted treatments. Previous animal studies have used eye blink and vibrissae movement as measures of facial nerve impairment and recovery. The purpose of this study was to create a mouse model of facial nerve injury that results in dysphagia to enhance translational research outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective animal study. METHODS: Twenty C57BL/6J mice underwent surgical transection of the main trunk (MT) (n = 10) or marginal mandibular branch (MMB) (n = 10)

West of Ireland facial injury study. Part 2.

The pattern, presentation, and volume of facial injury in the west of Ireland are subjectively different from those in the United Kingdom. We know of no prospective regional study of facial injury in Ireland to date, and nationally there is no system in place to collect data on injury. The epidemiology of facial trauma has important implications for the development of health services, the education and training of clinicians, workforce planning, prevention of injury, and promotion of health. Over 1 week we did a multicentre prospective data collection study involving all emergency departments

Surface wound mapping of battlefield occulo-facial injury.

INTRODUCTION: Accurately determining the entry location of penetrating eye and face wounds and relating that to mortality and long-term morbidity is of vital importance in the design of future personal protective equipment. METHOD: Hospital and post mortem records for all UK servicemen sustaining penetrating battle injuries to the face or eye during the period 01 January 2005 to 31 December 2009 were analysed. RESULTS: Face and eye injuries were found in 391/1187 (33%) and 113/1187 (10%) of all battle-injured servicemen respectively. 27% of eye wounds from explosions resulted in blindness an

[Prevention of facial nerve injury in acoustic neuroma microsurgery].

OBJECTIVE: To summarize and analyse the techniques of avoiding facial nerve injury during acoustic neuroma microsurgery. METHODS: One hundred and eighty patients with large acoustic neuroma (> or =4 cm) and 70 patients with medium acoustic neuroma (2.4-4.0 cm) were diagnosed by MRI/ CT scan before operation and confirmed by postoperative pathologic examination. All of patients were treated by sub-occipital retrosigmoid approach for tumor removal and facial nerve reservation during operation. The relationships among the bone, arachnoid, nerve and vascular anatomy were particularly observed dur

Unilateral facial nerve paralysis after electrocution injury.

We present a case of acute, unilateral facial nerve paralysis in a patient who had received a low voltage electrical current. This is an extremely rare cause of this neurological condition. The patient regained complete neurological function approximately three months after the incident. Unilateral facial nerve paralysis most commonly occurs due to infection or blunt or penetrating trauma; it has not been previously reported as a result of low voltage electrical injury.

Age, diet and injury affect the survival of facial motoneurons.

Using the model of facial nerve avulsion, we have compared the effects of injury, age and diet on motoneuronal survival. One to four weeks after nerve avulsion, 50-75% motoneuron loss was quantified in ad libitum-fed rats aged 7 days (neonate), 6 months (adult) and 24 months (aging) at the time of injury. Evidence of apoptosis was found for neonatal rats at 3 days post-injury, but not for neonates examined 7 days or adult or aging rats examined 1 month after injury. Non-operated, ad libitum-fed rats showed no significant loss of facial motoneurons by 24 months. Surprisingly, non-operated rats

Facial trauma and the risk of intracranial injury in motorcycle riders.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: We describe the associations among facial fracture, helmet use, skull fracture, and traumatic brain injury in injured motorcycle riders. METHODS: The study population consisted of 5,790 motorcycle riders who sustained an injury from a crash in 1991, 1992, or 1993 and were identified from emergency department or hospital records in 28 hospitals in 11 California counties. Diagnostic information was abstracted from ED or hospital records and coded to the 1990 Abbreviated Injury Scale. The risk of traumatic brain injury was examined by using odds ratios and 95% confidence interva

Transcranial magnetic stimulation in acute facial nerve injury.

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: Available electrodiagnostic tests that are used to evaluate facial nerve injury examine the nerve distal to the stylomastoid foramen; because most facial nerve injuries are within the temporal bone, the tests cannot evaluate the nerve at or across the injury site. The interpretation of these tests depends on the predictability (or unpredictability) of distal degenerative process. Transcranial magnetic stimulation may be able to stimulate the nerve proximal to the injury site. The hypothesis of the present study is that in cases of mild traumatic facial nerve injury where
