What Factors Are Associated with Health Literacy Among Family Caregivers of Older Adults?

OBJECTIVES: To identify factors associated with different levels of health literacy among family caregivers of older adults. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 150 family caregivers recruited while care recipients attended appointments at a tertiary hospital in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Caregivers were classified into three groups (i.e. inadequate, marginal, and adequate health literacy) according to the total score on a health literacy measure. In addition to health literacy, caregivers were assessed for burnout, depressive symptoms, social support, and satisfaction wi

Co-Designing a Family e-Hub: A Systemic, Relational, Digital Mental Health Resource.

Access to family and systemic therapies remains limited. Digital mental health interventions offer potential to extend access; however, most are designed for individual users, presenting challenges when engaging multiple members of a family. This study used a participatory co-design approach to inform the development of the Family e-Hub, a systemic, self-guided digital resource grounded in family-specific design principles. Drawing on the perspectives of consumers with lived experience of family therapy and family therapists, the study aimed to co-design recommendations for Family e-Hub conten

The second violence: Police responses to family violence as a public health exposure.

OBJECTIVES: This paper contributes to a broader survivor-led program of research on second violence: the institutional reproduction of harm through systems formally designed to respond to violence. Within that broader program, the paper focuses on one police station encounter to examine how police contact can operate as a modifiable public health exposure in family and domestic violence response. STUDY DESIGN: Survivor-led autoethnographic case study. METHODS: Data were drawn from The Second Violence, a four-year, ethics-approved autoethnographic study documenting lived experience of navigat

Impacts of Paid Family Leave on Perinatal Health: A Nationwide Quasi-Experimental Study.

OBJECTIVES: The United States remains the only high-income nation without a national paid family leave (PFL) policy. It also has persistently high maternal and infant mortality rates. Understanding PFL impacts on perinatal health is critical. We determined the impact of state PFL policies on perinatal health, with additional focus on socioeconomic disparities. METHODS: We analyzed live singleton births using 2016 to 2022 birth certificate data (N = 11 452 411). We conducted a quasi-experimental analysis using heterogeneity-robust differences in differences, comparing pre-post trends in a comp

Trends in Youth Mental Health Among Patients in Family Medicine Practices: 2017-2023.

OBJECTIVE: The burden of poor mental health among young people in the United States was rising before the onset of COVID-19. Prior research documents short-term increases in anxiety and depression in the wake of the pandemic, especially among older females. We study how the pandemic altered pre-existing trends in adolescent mental health and examine differential effects across demographic groups and time. METHODS: We used electronic health record data from a national primary care practice registry to identify primary care visits with diagnoses for anxiety, affective mood disorders, attention-

The Prevalence of Potentially Inappropriate Prescribing in Two Family Health Units in Portugal.

OBJECTIVE: Polypharmacy and potentially inappropriate prescribing (PIP) are growing concerns in the ageing population. They carry the risk of increasing adverse effects, medical interactions, and difficulties managing the medication. Few studies in Portugal evaluate the prevalence of polypharmacy and PIP in primary care. No previous studies in the primary care setting in Portugal have been conducted using the European Union (EU)(7)-PIM (potentially inappropriate medication) list tool. In this study, we aimed to estimate the prevalence of polypharmacy and PIP in two family health units in Portu

Stillbirth undercount in the sample registration system and national family health survey, India.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the extent of under-reporting of stillbirths in India by comparing stillbirth and neonatal mortality rates from two national data sources and to review possible reasons for undercounting of stillbirths. METHODS: We extracted data on stillbirth and neonatal mortality rates from the annual reports for 2016-2020 of the sample registration system, the Indian government's main source of vital statistics. We compared the data with estimates of stillbirth and neonatal mortality rates from the fifth round of the Indian national family health survey covering events from 2016-2021.

The Family is the Patient: Promoting Early Childhood Mental Health in Pediatric Care.

Advances in developmental psychology, child psychiatry, and allied disciplines have pointed to events and experiences in the early years as the origin of many adult mental health challenges. Yet, children's mental health services still largely lack a developmental or prevention-focused orientation, with most referrals to mental health professionals occurring late, once problems are well established. An early childhood mental health system rooted in the principles of life-course health development would take a very different approach to designing, testing, and implementing prevention and interv

Cash transfer programs and child health and family economic outcomes: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Family income is an important determinant of child and parental health. In Canada, cash transfer programs to families with children have existed since 1945. This systematic review aimed to examine the association between cash transfer programs to families with children and health outcomes in Canadian children (ages 0 to 18) as well as family economic outcomes. METHODS: We reviewed academic and grey literature published up to November 2021. Additional studies were identified through reference review. We included any study that examined children 0-18 years old and/or their parents,

Family member incarceration and physical health problems: A longitudinal study among Australian households.

This study examines the relationship between poor physical health and exposure to family member incarceration. Longitudinal data (2001-2015) from an Australian nationally representative household-based panel study was used (177,312 observations within 26,572 respondents). Hybrid random-effects models showed a strong correlation between poor physical health and family member imprisonment. However, this strong association can be explained for a large part by differences between individuals, since the association of physical health with within-individual changes in family member imprisonment was

Premature menopause among women in India: Evidence from National Family Health Survey-IV.

AIM: Women who experience premature menopause either due to biological or induced reasons have a longer duration of exposure to severe symptoms and adverse health consequences when compared to those who undergo menopause at later age. Despite the fact that premature menopause has a profound effect on the health of women, there has been limited study on this issue. Therefore, this study attempted to determine the prevalence and factors associated with premature menopause among 302 557 women aged 25-39 years in India. METHODS: This study utilized secondary data from the fourth round of the Nati

Family stress and youth mental health problems: Self-efficacy and future orientation mediation.

The following study assessed whether future orientation and self-esteem mediated the relationship between family stress and mental health problems among African American youth. Data from this study included 638 African American adolescents purposively sampled from predominantly low-income neighborhoods. Major variables assessed were family stress, self-esteem, future orientation, mental health, and covariates (i.e., gender, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic proxy). Structural equation modeling computed direct and indirect (meditational) relationships between family stress and youth mental

Referral Practices Among U.S. Publicly Funded Health Centers That Offer Family Planning Services.

BACKGROUND: Referrals to other medical services are central to healthcare, including family planning service providers; however, little information exists on the nature of referral practices among health centers that offer family planning. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used a nationally representative survey of administrators from 1,615 publicly funded health centers that offered family planning in 2013-14 to describe the use of six referral practices. We focused on associations between various health center characteristics and frequent use of three active referral practices. RESULTS: In the pri

Investigating the work-family conflict and health link: Repetitive thought as a mechanism.

Research is needed to investigate mechanisms linking work-family conflict to poor health in working adults. We took a novel approach to build on extant studies by testing a potential mechanism in these associations - repetitive thought. Data came from a sample of 203 partnered working adults. There were significant direct effects of work-family conflict with lower life satisfaction, positive affect, and perceived health as well as greater fatigue. As for total effects, work-family conflict was significantly associated with all health outcomes - life satisfaction, positive affect, negative affe
