Effect of dietary fats rich in lauric, myristic, palmitic, oleic or linoleic acid on plasma, hepatic and biliary lipids in cholesterol-fed hamsters.

Effects of different dietary fats on plasma, hepatic and biliary lipids were determined in male golden Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) fed on purified diets for 7 weeks. Diets were made by blending different fats containing characteristic fatty acids: butter (14:0 + 16:0), palm stearin (16:0), coconut oil (12:0 + 14:0), rapeseed oil (18:1), olive oil (18:1) and sunflowerseed oil (18:2). In all diets except the sunflowerseed oil diet dietary 18:2 was held constant at 2% energy. Total fat supplied 12% of energy and cholesterol was added at 4 g/kg diet. Plasma cholesterol and triacyglycero

Efficacy of Lactococcus lactis WiKim0124 in Fat-, Sucrose-, and Fat/Sucrose-Induced Obesity Models.

Lactococcus lactis WiKim0124 (WiKim0124), a probiotic strain isolated from kimchi, has previously shown anti-obesity effects in high-fat diet (HFD) models. This study investigated whether WiKim0124 and its formulated version, SW01, exert consistent anti-obesity efficacy across distinct diet-induced obesity models through modulation of host lipid metabolism and gut microbial function. In 3T3-L1 adipocytes and FFA-treated HepG2 cells, both treatments inhibited lipid accumulation and modulated lipid metabolism-related markers, indicating enhanced fatty acid oxidation and reduced lipogenesis. In C

A Case of Acute Pancreatitis With Fat Saponification Mimicking Carcinomatosis in an Adolescent: Is It Carcinomatosis or Fat Necrosis?

Acute pancreatitis, the most common pancreatic disease in children (1-13 cases per 100,000 children per year), uncommonly presents with extrapancreatic fat necrosis and saponification. This uncommon manifestation can radiologically and intraoperatively resemble peritoneal carcinomatosis or neoplasms, often necessitating histopathological confirmation. Integrating clinical and radiological findings is crucial for accurate diagnosis and to avoid unnecessary interventions. We present a case of an adolescent with acute pancreatitis and extrapancreatic fat saponification mimicking carcinomatosis (w

A plant protein-based fat texturizer: Enzymatic bioproduction and application in non-fat yogurt.

The growing demand for low-fat or non-fat food products highlights the need for fat texturizers that replicate the mouthfeel and texture of fat. This study investigates the enzymatic modification of lentil protein isolates (LPI) to generate amphiphilic polypeptides for fat replacement in non-fat foods, exemplified by yogurt. LPI was hydrolyzed using Alcalase at varying enzyme-to-substrate ratios (1:100-1:2000) and hydrolysis times (2-240 min). Enzymatic hydrolysis significantly modified LPI, with partially hydrolyzed proteins (LPP5-10, <50 kDa) exhibiting balanced functional properties, includ

Dyslipidemia is associated with abdominal fat depots but not with bone mineral density and muscle fat infiltration.

BACKGROUND: Dyslipidemia (DLP) is linked to adverse abdominal fat distribution; however, its relationship with bone mineral density (BMD) and muscle fat infiltration (MFI) remains unclear. This study aimed to assess, using quantitative computed tomography (QCT), whether DLP is associated with abdominal fat depots, and if it independently correlates with BMD or MFI. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included participants aged ≥ 40 years from a health check-up cohort. Demographic data and fasting blood lipid measurements were collected for analysis. QCT imaging at the L2 vertebral level was em

Synergistic Effects of Bioactive Compounds on Human Adiposity Mechanisms of Fat Loss and Fat Accumulation.

Adipose tissue plays a crucial role in regulating metabolic health in humans, where both an excess and a deficiency can lead to chronic diseases. Bioactive compounds derived from food like polyphenols, alkaloids, terpenoids, peptides, and fibers have been recognized as significant influencers of fat metabolism. They operate through various molecular and systemic pathways, facilitating either adiposity reduction or fat accumulation based on the physiological context. This review consolidates recent progress in comprehending the mechanisms through which these compounds affect lipolysis, adipogen

Mechanical insights into fat pads: a comparative study of infrapatellar and suprapatellar fat pads in osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common musculoskeletal disorder, primarily affecting knee joints and causing pain and disability. The infrapatellar (IFP) and the suprapatellar (SFP) fat pad are knee adipose tissues that play essential mechanical roles during articular activity but are also sources of adipokines and cytokines, contributing to OA progression. For this reason, this work aims to provide new insights into IFP and SFP implications in knee OA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: IFP and SFP tissue mechanical properties were studied through compression, indentation and shear mechanical

Blood or Fat? Differentiating Hemopericardium versus Epicardial Fat Using Focused Cardiac Ultrasound.

Basic point-of-care ultrasound of the heart-also known as Focused Cardiac Ultrasound (FoCUS)-has emerged as a powerful bedside tool to narrow the differential diagnosis of causes of hypotension. The list of causes of hypotension that a FoCUS provider is expected to be able to recognize includes a compressive pericardial effusion due to hemopericardium (blood in the pericardial sac). But hemopericardium can be difficult to distinguish from a more common condition that is not immediately life-threatening: epicardial fat. This paper reviews illustrative images of both epicardial fat and hemoperic

Porcine bile acids promote the utilization of fat and vitamin A under low-fat diets.

Fat-soluble vitamin malabsorption may occur due to low dietary fat content, even in the presence of an adequate supply of fat-soluble vitamins. Bile acids (BAs) have been confirmed as emulsifiers to promote fat absorption in high-fat diets. However, there are no direct evidence of exogenous BAs promoting the utilization of fat-soluble vitamins associated with fat absorption in vitro and in vivo. Therefore, we chose laying hens as model animals, as their diet usually does not contain much fat, to expand the study of BAs. BAs were investigated in vitro for emulsification, simulated intestinal di

The association of pericardial fat and peri-aortic fat with severity of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is associated with central obesity, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome. However, the association of body-site specific adiposity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has not been well characterized. We studies 704 consecutive subjects who underwent annual health survey in Taiwan. All subjects have been divided into three groups including normal (341), mild (227) and moderate and severe (136) NAFLD according to ultrasound finding. Pericardial (PCF) and thoracic peri-aortic adipose tissue (TAT) burden was assessed using a non-contrast 16-slice multi-

Alcohol and fat promote steatohepatitis: a critical role for fat-specific protein 27/CIDEC.

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a major public health problem worldwide and is the leading cause of end-stage liver disease. While the ultimate control of ALD will require the prevention of alcohol abuse, better understanding of the mechanisms of alcohol-induced liver injury may lead to treatments of fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis, and prevention or delay of occurrence of cirrhosis. The elucidation and the discovery of several new concepts in ALD pathogenesis have raised our understanding on the complex mechanisms and the potential in developing the new strategies for therapeutic benefits.

Colour difference of subcutaneous fat and palmar fat pad in open carpal tunnel release.

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common compression neuropathy of the extremity. The most frequent occurring post-operative complication of open carpal tunnel release is the incomplete release of the transverse carpal ligament. A constant pad of palmar fat pad has been found to provide a reliable indicator of the distal extent of the surgical decompression of the transverse carpal ligament. We investigated the colour difference between subcutaneous fat and palmar fat pad. METHODS: This is a prospective case series of 15 patients undergoing open carpal tunnel release. Digital ima

Fucoidan prevents high-fat diet-induced obesity in animals by suppression of fat accumulation.

This study examines the antiobesity effects of fucoidan in an animal model of diet-induced obesity. Mice were fed a standard diet or high-fat diet (HFD) for 5 weeks. After that, the mice were divided into four experimental groups, with 10 mice per group, including a standard diet group, HFD group, HFD containing 1% fucoidan (HFD + FUCO 1%) group and HFD containing 2% fucoidan (HFD + FUCO 2%) group. The fucoidan supplementation group had significantly decreased body-weight gain, food efficiency ratio and relative liver and epididymal fat mass compared with the HFD group. The mice supplemented w

Induction of fat cell necrosis in human fat tissue after treatment with phosphatidylcholine and deoxycholate.

BACKGROUND: Injections with phosphatidylcholine- and deoxycholate-containing substances are used to treat localized fat accumulation and lipomas. It is believed that the injected substances induce fat cell destruction with subsequent acute panniculitis followed by a repair process of the treated fat tissue. OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether necrosis or apoptosis of fat cells was induced by the injected substances. METHODS: Samples of fat tissue of lipoma were collected at various times after injection and evaluated by light and electron microscopy, by immunostaining for active caspase-3 an

Is intraorbital fat extraorbital? Results of cross-sectional anatomy of the lower eyelid fat pads.

BACKGROUND: Prominent fat pads of the lower eyelids are a frequent complaint prompting patients to seek cosmetic surgery. Previous studies have stated that these fat pads exist as three compartments in the lower eyelids. An accepted anatomic concept is that these lower eyelid fat pads are intraorbital. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the possibility of distinct compartments of lower eyelid fat pads not being different from each other, but rather being separate from posterior intraorbital fat. METHODS: This study used eight hemifacial cadaver dissections. Methylene blue injections were used t

Genes are differentially expressed in the epididymal fat of rats rendered obese by a high-fat diet.

The aim of present study was to identify the visceral adipose tissue genes differentially expressed in a well-characterized rat model of high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed either the HFD (17 g lard + 3 g corn oil/100 g) or the normal diet (5 g corn oil/100 g) for 9 weeks. The HFD rats weighed 55% more and accumulated 85% to 133% greater visceral fats than did the normal-diet rats (P < .05). Animals given the HFD for 9 weeks acquired dyslipidemia, fatty liver, insulin resistance, and hyperleptinemia along with the overexpression of several obesity-related gen
