Scaling up diarrhea prevention and treatment interventions: a Lives Saved Tool analysis.

BACKGROUND: Diarrhea remains a leading cause of mortality among young children in low- and middle-income countries. Although the evidence for individual diarrhea prevention and treatment interventions is solid, the effect a comprehensive scale-up effort would have on diarrhea mortality has not been estimated. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We use the Lives Saved Tool (LiST) to estimate the potential lives saved if two scale-up scenarios for key diarrhea interventions (oral rehydration salts [ORS], zinc, antibiotics for dysentery, rotavirus vaccine, vitamin A supplementation, basic water, sanitation, h

Hyperhomocysteinemia induced by feeding rats diets rich in DL-homocysteine thiolactone promotes alterations on carotid reactivity independent of arterial structure.

We aimed to investigate whether hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) interferes on carotid vascular reactivity, and how morphological and functional aspects are related. With this purpose male Wistar rats received a solution of dl-homocysteine-thiolactone (1g/kg body weight/day) in the drinking water for 4, 15 and 30 days. Lipid profile, carotid artery-morphology and -responsiveness to acetylcholine, phenylephrine and endothelin-1 were analyzed. Similar increase on homocysteine plasmatic levels occurred in rats treated for 4, 15 and 30 days. High levels of serum cholesterol and triglycerides were obser

The selection of larvae of Boophilus microplus infected with Babesia bovis (syn B argentina).

Observations on the dynamics of the transovarial transmission of Babesia bovis by Boophilus microplus showed that, at 28 degrees C and 90--95 per cent relative humidity, a low proportion of the eggs laid during the first five days' incubation of the engorged female ticks were infected with the Babesia. However, the eggs laid on the sixth and seventh days of incubation were heavily infected. This was the basis of a method for selecting larval cultures of B microplus which contained up to five times the infection rate of B bovis obtained if the entire egg mass of the tick were used. The techniqu

Influence of estrus on dry matter intake, water intake and BW of dairy cows.

The objectives of this study were to analyze whether dry matter intake (DMI), water intake (WI) and BW were influenced by estrus. A second objective was to determine whether correlations exist among these traits in non-estrous days. Data collection included 34 Holstein-Friesian cows from the research farm 'Haus Riswick' of the Agricultural Chamber North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. On an individual basis, daily DMI and daily WI were measured automatically by a scale in the feeding trough and a WI monitoring system, respectively. BW was determined by a walk-through scale fitted with two gates - o

Simplified design and precautionary measures in fabrication of a feeding obturator for a newborn with cleft lip and palate.

The immediate problem to be addressed in a new born with cleft lip and palate is the interference of feeding. Here we present a case of cleft lip and palate for which a feeding obturator was made to facilitate feeding till the defect could be surgically repaired. The design was modified by placing orthodontic wire on the acrylic plate for attaching the ties of mouth mask. Different precautionary measures undertaken while making impression for infant have also been described. Feeding appliance improved the sucking ability of the infant. The attachment of mouth-mask ties help in easy retrieval o

Feeding complications in hypoplastic left heart syndrome after the Norwood procedure: a systematic review of the literature.

Gastrointestinal and feeding complications after the Norwood procedure in infants with hypoplastic left heart syndrome increases morbidity and mortality. These problems are the result of intraoperative challenges, shunt-dependent physiology, and the absence of best-practice guidelines. In response, a systematic review of feeding-related complications and management strategies was performed. A literature search from 1950 to March 2010 identified 21 primary research articles and 4 reviews. Dysphagia, necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), and poor nutritional status are significant feeding-related com

Life-threatening refeeding syndrome in a severely malnourished anorexia nervosa patient.

Overzealous refeeding in chronically malnourished anorexia nervosa patients may cause life-threatening complications. We describe a 14-year-old girl with anorexia nervosa who had a decrease in body weight from 45 kg to 25.5 kg over an 18-month period. She received 40 kcal.kg-1.d-1 carbohydrate-rich nutrition via enteral and parenteral routes. Her serum phosphate concentration dropped from a baseline of 1.39 mmol/L (4.3 mg/dL) to 0.19 mmol/L (0.6 mg/dL) on Day 4 of refeeding. Concurrent with the development of hypophosphatemia, she became drowsy and developed generalized muscle weakness, impair

Atomic absorption spectrophotometric determination of dibutyltin dilaurate in finished feeds: collaborative study.

Dibutyltin dilaurate is administered in the feed as an active drug for the removal of large roundworms, cecal worms, and several species of tapeworms from chickens and turkeys. The drug is extracted from finished feed with warm CHCl3, the CHCl3 extract is filtered, and a 25 ml aliquot is concentrated in the presence of methanol until all traces of CHCl3 are removed. The methanol solution is diluted and filtered to remove feed interferences, and then aspirated into an atomic absorption spectrophotometer with a triple-slot burner head, using an air/acetylene flame. The instrument response to tin

Developmental Feeding Stages and Their Impact on Child Feeding Behavior.

OBJECTIVES: Previous research has shown that critical periods of feeding skills development exist and feeding problems can arise in children due to delays in attaining feeding developmental milestones. This study aims to delineate the transitional process of feeding development in healthy children and children with gastrointestinal diseases (GIDs) and to examine the relationship between feeding milestones and the appearance of later feeding problems. METHODS: A cross-sectional case-control study among 711 healthy Greek children and 119 children with GID, aged 2-7 years. Parents completed the

The therapeutic effect and complications of oro-esophageal tube training in stroke patients.

Background: Patients with severe dysphagia after stroke are usually fed using a nasogastric tube. However, this method is inconvenient and causes complications. The oro-esophageal (OE) tube has been used as an alternative parenteral feeding method for patients for whom safe oral feeding is impossible. This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effects and complications of OE tube feeding in stroke patients with dysphagia. Methods: This study was designed as a retrospective medical chart review of dysphagic stroke patients who were recommended for OE tube feeding. Thirty-eight stroke patients

Hospital Careful Hand Feeding Program Reduced Feeding Tube Use in Patients with Advanced Dementia.

OBJECTIVES: Tube feeding is prevalent among patients with advanced dementia despite empirical data that suggest its lack of benefit. To provide an alternative to tube feeding for end-of-life patients, a careful hand feeding program was launched in a Hong Kong geriatric convalescent hospital in February 2017. We aim to compare the rates of feeding tube insertion before and after program implementation and determine risk factors for feeding tube insertion. For patients on careful hand feeding, we evaluated their sustainability on oral feeding and the rates of hospital readmissions compared with

Evaluation of Feeding Tube Migration in Critical Care Patients.

BACKGROUND: Small-bore feeding tubes are often used to provide nutrition and medications to critically ill patients. Ensuring a proper distal location of the feeding tube is important to minimize aspiration risk and promote absorption of nutrients. Current guidelines call for routine verification of feeding tube location every 4 hours, yet no validated methods are available to routinely perform this bedside assessment. OBJECTIVE: To assess distal migration of the tip of small-bore feeding tubes over time in critically ill adults and to identify factors affecting migration. A secondary aim was

Practices and attitudes toward breast-feeding among medical professionals.

The results of a mail survey conducted among pediatricians, obstetricians, family practitioners, and nurses, and results of an adjunct survey conducted among hospital administrators are presented. According to the findings, breast-feeding is advocated by physicians; however, the topic is not always initiated, so the mother is influenced by other sources. Supplementary foods and vitamins are advocated to varying degrees and not necessarily in keeping with present knowledge about nutrition. Physicians are willing to counsel mothers regarding problems with breast-feeding and feel that further phy

Important facts about intestinal feeding tube placement.

Enteral feeding is desirable when the gastrointestinal tract is functional because it allows better use of nutrients, is safer, and is more cost-effective than parenteral nutrition. Feeding through a gastric tube, however, is often not feasible in severely ill adults and children because of gastric paresis leading to recurrent episodes of gastroesophageal reflux with the risk of subsequent aspiration. Feeding into the small intestine (duodenum or jejunum) through a nasointestinal tube, therefore, is preferred. Unfortunately, no method of enteral feeding is risk free. This literature review add

[Feeding disorders in children with gastro-esophageal reflux disease].

BACKGROUND: feeding/eating disorders are frequent in pediatric patients and, in some cases, can be associated to an upper digestive motility disorder. Gastro-esophageal reflux is, nowadays, considered a risk factor for the development of feeding/eating disorders. AIM: to verify the occurrence of feeding/eating disorders in patients with Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) determined by the 24-H esophageal pH monitoring evaluation. METHOD: an analytical observational cross-sectional study of the stomathognatic system and feeding/eating behavior in healthy children and in children with GER
