Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a cutaneous neuroendocrine tumor. We recently demonstrated that cats with MCC often have other proliferative cutaneous lesions, such as squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC). Based on this finding, we hypothesize that Felis catus papillomavirus (FcaPV) is involved in the development of MCC in cats, similar to SCC and BCC. To investigate this hypothesis, the presence of FcaPV nucleic acid and immunoreactivity for tumor suppressor proteins were examined in 21 feline MCC cases. Polymerase chain reaction using FcaPV type-specific primers detect

The domestic cat (Felis silvestris catus) is a valued companion animal throughout the world. Over 60 different cat breeds are accepted for competition by the cat fancy registries in different countries. Genetic markers, including short tandem repeats and SNPs, are available to evaluate and manage levels of inbreeding and genetic diversity, population and breed structure relationships, and individual identification for forensic and registration purposes. The International Society of Animal Genetics (ISAG) hosts the Applied Genetics in Companion Animals Workshop, which supports the standardizati

Rickettsia felis (R. felis) infection is a cause of unspecified encephalitis. However, the incidence has been underestimated due to the intracellular features of the pathogen and insufficient understanding of its clinical picture. This study reported a case of R. felis infection in a 26-year-old female who only manifested with certain neurological symptoms. With a lack of specific systemic inflammatory symptoms, the diagnosis was initially misdiagnosed as a brain glioma. However, a brain tissue biopsy showed prominent perivascular inflammatory infiltrations, which indicated inflammatory diseas

INTRODUCTION: Rickettsia felis is the causative agent of flea-borne spotted fever (FBSF), an emerging zoonosis. Although there is evidence of FBSF in Greece, fleas, the classic vectors of R. felis, have not been adequately studied. Thus, the aim of this study was to detect and characterize bacteria of genus Rickettsia and especially R. felis from common fleas parasitizing domestic cats and dogs in Greece and evaluate the efficiency of established molecular techniques.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: DNA of flea-pools (samples) by animal-host was investigated by quantitative real-time PCRs (qPCR), and

Three different Hepatozoon (Apicomplexa, Hepatozoidae) species have been described infecting domestic cats in Europe (i.e. H. felis, H. canis and H. silvestris), however, reports on clinical hepatozoonosis are uncommon and treatment protocols are not clearly defined. A six-year-old male European short-hair cat from Austria presented poor general condition, lethargy, anorexia, icterus, a painful abdomen, fever, ruffled hair and a tick infestation, and it had never left Austria. Laboratory tests revealed leukopenia, thrombocytopenia and increased serum levels of symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA)

There has been little research into brachycephalism and associated disorders in cats. A questionnaire aimed at cat owners was used to determine the relationship between feline facial conformation and owner-reported cat management requirements and respiratory abnormalities. Owner-submitted photographs of cats were used to develop novel measures of skull conformation. One thousand valid questionnaires were received. Within these there were 373 valid photographs that allowed measurement of muzzle ratio (M%) and 494 that allowed nose position ratio (NP%). The data included 239 cats for which both

Angiostrongylus chabaudi (Strongylida, Angiostrongylidae) is a parasitic nematode described for the first time last century from the pulmonary arteries of six European wildcats (Felis silvestris silvestris) in central Italy. Since then, this parasite remained practically unknown until recently, when immature A. chabaudi have been reported from one wildcat in Germany and two domestic cats (Felis silvestris catus) in Italy. The present report describes the first record of A. chabaudi in Greece and, most importantly, the first known case of patent infection by A. chabaudi. The necropsy of a road-

During 2010, 15 adult ticks, identified as Amblyomma cajennense, were collected from horses in Cahuita and Turrialba districts, whereas 7 fleas, identified as Ctenocephalides felis, were collected from a dog in San Jose city, Costa Rica. In the laboratory, three A. cajennense specimens, two from Cahuita and one from Turrialba, were individually processed for rickettsial isolation in cell culture, as was a pool of seven fleas. Rickettsiae were successfully isolated and established in Vero cell culture from the three ticks and from a pool of seven fleas in C6/36 cell culture. The three tick isol

The prevalence of persistent bacteremic Bartonella spp. and hemoplasma infections was determined in healthy pet cats in Ontario. Blood samples from healthy cats sent to a diagnostic laboratory for routine health assessment over the course of 1 y were tested for Bartonella spp. using both polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and blood culture, and for the presence of hemoplasma by PCR. The overall prevalence of Bartonella spp. by PCR and by culture combined was 4.3% (28/646) [3.7% (24/646) Bartonella henselae, 0.6% (4/646) Bartonella clarridgeiae]. The novel B. henselae PCR developed for this study

The prevalence of and risk factors associated with the shedding of cryptosporidial oocysts were determined for domestic cats in northeastern Mississippi and northwestern Alabama. Cryptosporidial oocysts were found in a single fecal samples from 30 of 250 cats using a centrifugal concentration technique followed by an immunofluorescent assay. The odds of a cat shedding oocysts were increased when another cat shedding oocysts was present in the household. Logistic regression analysis showed only concurrent shedding of Giardia cysts to be significantly associated with the presence of Cryptosporid

Helicobacter pylori colonizes the gastric mucosa of human and causes chronic gastritis. The previous studies have demonstrated that gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) but not tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) plays a critical role in pathogenesis of gastritis induced by H. pylori infection. In this study we investigated the induction of gastritis induced by H. felis infection in TNF-alpha-deficient mice, comparing with IFN-gamma-deficient mice. The scores of gastritis and epithelial changes of TNF-alpha-deficient mice and IFN-gamma-deficient mice were significantly lower than that of C57BL/6 m

When adult cat fleas, Ctenocephalides felis (Bouché), were fed concentrations of < or = 0.08 ppm lufenuron in cattle blood, egg hatch did not differ significantly from the controls. However, as the concentration of lufenuron in blood increased from 0.125 to 1.0 ppm egg hatch decreased to 64 and 2%, respectively. Most of these eggs contained fully developed larvae. Microscopic examination of unhatched larvae, revealed that the cuticle epidermal cells, chorion, and vitelline membrane all were affected by lufenuron treatment. Larvae often produced 2 separate cuticles in response to treatment. The

Two neonatal lambs were inoculated orally with purified Cryptosporidium species oocysts isolated from a farm cat. Oocysts first appeared in the faeces of the two lambs three and 10 days after infection. Two distinct sizes of oocysts were observed in the faeces of both the cat and the lambs, the smaller measuring approximately 5.0 x 4.5 microns and the larger measuring approximately 6.0 x 5.0 microns in diameter. The smaller type predominated. Histological examination of the alimentary tract of the lambs revealed endogenous stages of Cryptosporidium in the epithelial borders of the ileum. In ad

1. Taste buds in catfish are found not only within the oropharyngeal cavity, as in mammals, but are also located along the external body surface of the animal from the barbels and lips to the caudal fin. Because these taste buds are innervated by the facial (cranial VII) nerve, the extraoral taste system of catfish is analogous to the mammalian taste system of the anterior two-thirds of the tongue, which contains taste buds innervated by the chorda tympani nerve, and of the soft palate and nasoincisor ducts, which contain taste buds innervated by the greater superficial petrosal nerve. 2. Estimating time since death, or Post-Mortem Interval (PMI), is a critical component of forensic veterinary pathology. Although many variables are implicated in the decomposition timescale, environmental temperature and its fluctuations significantly affect its progression and the accuracy of PMI estimates. Accumulated Degree Days (ADDs) assist in PMI determination by summing the daily average environmental temperatures. Biomolecular techniques, especially RNA-based analysis, offer promising applications due to the intrinsic instability of RNA after death. In this study, 54 deceased cats collec

Rats are managed using anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) in cities worldwide, but these compounds cause morbidity and mortality in nontarget wildlife. Several cities also use free-roaming outdoor cat (Felis catus) colonies to help reduce rats, but there have been no investigations of how often these cats are exposed to ARs. In this study, our goal was to assess how often free-roaming domestic cats are exposed to ARs to 1) understand health risks for urban predators by using free-roaming cats as a proxy and 2) evaluate the health risks associated with using cats as rodent control. We tested bloo

BACKGROUND: Ctenocephalides felis is a common ectoparasite of dogs and cats and can transmit a variety of pathogens including Bartonella and Rickettsia species. These bacteria, along with the known endosymbiont Wolbachia, are well-documented members of the C. felis microbiome, but species-level information is limited. Additionally, little is known about the variation in the C. felis microbiome in fleas from different sources and when different sequencing methods are applied to the same samples.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize the flea microbiome using both short-read (V3/V4) and l
