Multiferroic properties-structure relationships in epitaxial Bi(2)FeCrO(6) thin films: recent developments.

We report recent developments in the growth and characterization of epitaxial Bi(2)FeCrO(6) (BFCO) thin films. The body of experimental data stemming mostly from our investigations, and also considering the few available reports from other groups, allows us to explain the origin(s) of the thickness dependence of the multiferroic properties observed. A drastic reduction of the films' magnetization is observed for film thicknesses larger than 80 nm. This decrease in magnetization is attributed to the formation of defects, such as antisites and antiphase boundaries, in the BFCO films. The change

Successful stabilization of the elusive species {FeNO}8 in a heme model.

Nitroxyl (HNO/NO(-)) heme-adducts have been postulated as intermediates in a variety of catalytic processes carried out by different metalloenzymes. Hence, there is growing interest in obtaining and characterizing heme model nitroxyl complexes. The one-electron chemical reduction of the {FeNO}(7) nitrosyl derivative of Fe(III)(TFPPBr(8))Cl, Fe(II)(TFPPBr(8))NO (1) (TFPPBr(8) = 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octabromo-5,10,15,20-[Tetrakis-(pentafluorophenyl)]porphyrin) with cobaltocene yields the significantly stable {FeNO}(8) complex, [Co(C(5)H(5))(2)](+)[Fe(TFPPBr(8))NO](-) (2). Complex 2 was isolated a

Cu(I)/bis(azaferrocene)-catalyzed enantioselective synthesis of beta-lactams via couplings of alkynes with nitrones.

As a consequence of the wide-ranging significance of beta-lactams (e.g., use as drugs and as chiral building blocks), a great deal of effort has been dedicated to the development of methods for their stereoselective synthesis. Although considerable progress has been achieved, nearly all of the approaches that have been described are based on the use of chiral precursors; direct catalytic enantioselective routes to beta-lactams are rare as well as limited in scope. In this communication, we establish that, using a new C2-symmetric planar-chiral bis(azaferrocene) ligand, we can generate beta-lac

Iodine stability in salt double-fortified with iron and iodine.

Deficiencies in small quantities of micronutrients, especially iodine and iron, severely affect more than a third of the world's population, resulting in serious public health consequences, especially for women and young children. Salt is an ideal carrier of micronutrients. The double fortification of salt with both iodine and iron is an attractive approach to the reduction of both anemia and iodine-deficiency disorders. Because iodine is unstable under the storage conditions found during the manufacturing, distribution, and sale of salt in most developing countries, the effects of packaging m

Nanosensor for Fe(II) and Fe(III) Allowing Spatiotemporal Sensing in Planta.

Fluorescent nanosensors operating in planta have shown recent success toward informing basic plant biology and agricultural applications. We developed near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent nanosensors using the Corona Phase Molecular Recognition (CoPhMoRe) technique that distinguish Fe(II) and Fe(III) species with limit of detection as low as 10 nM. An anionic poly(p-phenyleneethynylene) (PPE) polyelectrolyte wrapped single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) shows up to 200% turn-on and 85% turn-off responses to Fe(II) and Fe(III), respectively, allowing spatial and temporal analysis of iron uptake in bo

Novel Insights into Sb(III) Oxidation and Immobilization during Ferrous Iron Oxygenation: The Overlooked Roles of Singlet Oxygen and Fe (oxyhydr)oxides Formation.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced from the oxygenation of reactive Fe(II) species significantly affect the transformation of metalloids such as Sb at anoxic-oxic redox interfaces. However, the main ROS involved in Sb(III) oxidation and Fe (oxyhydr)oxides formation during co-oxidation of Sb(III) and Fe(II) are still poorly understood. Herein, this study comprehensively investigated the Sb(III) oxidation and immobilization process and mechanism during Fe(II) oxygenation. The results indicated that Sb(III) was oxidized to Sb(V) by the ROS produced in the aqueous and solid phases and then imm

Inhibition of Extracellular Enzyme Activity by Reactive Oxygen Species upon Oxygenation of Reduced Iron-Bearing Minerals.

The dual roles of minerals in inhibiting and prolonging extracellular enzyme activity in soils and sediments are governed by enzyme adsorption to mineral surfaces. Oxygenation of mineral-bound Fe(II) generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), yet it is unknown whether and how this process alters the activity and functional lifespan of extracellular enzymes. Here, the effect of mineral-bound Fe(II) oxidation on the hydrolytic activity of a cellulose-degrading enzyme β-glucosidase (BG) was studied using two pre-reduced Fe-bearing clay minerals (nontronite and montmorillonite) and one pre-reduced i

N,S-codoped biochar outperformed N-doped biochar on co-activation of H2O2 with trace dissolved Fe(Ⅲ) for enhanced oxidation of organic pollutants.

Co-activation of H2O2 with biochar and iron sources together provides an attractive strategy for efficient removal of refractory pollutants, because it can solve the problems of slow Fe(Ⅱ) regeneration in Fenton/Fenton-like processes and of low •OH yield in biochar-activated process. In this study, a wood-derived biochar (WB) was modified by heteroatom doping for the objective of enhancing its reactivity toward co-activation of H2O2. The performance of the co-activated system using doped biochars and trace dissolved Fe(Ⅲ) on oxidation of organic pollutants was evaluated for the first time. The

Tracking the formation potential of vivianite within the treatment train of full-scale wastewater treatment plants.

Phosphorus recovery is a vital element for the circular economy. Wastewater, especially sewage sludge, shows great potential for recovering phosphate in the form of vivianite. This work focuses on studying the iron, phosphorus, and sulfur interactions at full-scale wastewater treatment plants (Viikinmäki, Finland and Seine Aval, France) with the goal of identifying unit processes with a potential for vivianite formation. Concentrations of iron(III) and iron(II), phosphorus, and sulfur were used to evaluate the reduction of iron and the formation potential of vivianite. Mössbauer spectroscopy a

(±)-Catechin-A Mass-Spectrometry-Based Exploration Coordination Complex Formation with FeII and FeIII.

Catechin is an extensively investigated plant flavan-3-ol with a beneficial impact on human health that is often associated with antioxidant activities and iron coordination complex formation. The aim of this study was to explore these properties with FeII and FeIII using a combination of nanoelectrospray-mass spectrometry, differential pulse voltammetry, site-specific deoxyribose degradation assay, FeII autoxidation assay, and brine shrimp mortality assay. Catechin primarily favored coordination complex formation with Fe ions of the stoichiometry catechin:Fe in the ratio of 1:1 or 2:1. In the

Second Coordination Sphere Effects on the Mechanistic Pathways for Dioxygen Activation by a Ferritin: Involvement of a Tyr Radical and the Identification of a Cation Binding Site.

Ferritins are ubiquitous diiron enzymes involved in iron(II) detoxification and oxidative stress responses and can act as metabolic iron stores. The overall reaction mechanisms of ferritin enzymes are still unclear, particularly concerning the role of the conserved, near catalytic center Tyr residue. Thus, we carried out a computational study of a ferritin using a large cluster model of well over 300 atoms including its first- and second-coordination sphere. The calculations reveal important insight into the structure and reactivity of ferritins. Specifically, the active site Tyr residue deliv

Tetracycline-Induced Release and Oxidation of As(III) Coupled with Concomitant Ferrihydrite Transformation.

Cocontamination with tetracycline (TC) and arsenic (As) is very common in paddy fields. However, the process and underlying mechanism of arsenite (As(III)) transformation on iron mineral surfaces in the presence of antibiotic contaminants remain unclear. In this study, the release and oxidation of As(III) on ferrihydrite (Fh) surfaces and Fh transformation in the presence of TC under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions were investigated. Our results indicated that the TC-induced reductive dissolution of Fh (Fe(II) release) and TC competitive adsorption significantly promote the release of As

Effect of Siderophore DFOB on U(VI) Adsorption to Clay Mineral and Its Subsequent Reduction by an Iron-Reducing Bacterium.

Uranium mining and nuclear fuel production have led to significant U contamination. Past studies have focused on the bioreduction of soluble U(VI) to insoluble U(IV) as a remediation method. However, U(IV) is susceptible to reoxidation and remobilization when conditions change. Here, we demonstrate that a combination of adsorption and bioreduction of U(VI) in the presence of an organic ligand (siderophore desferrioxamine B, DFOB) and the Fe-rich clay mineral nontronite partially alleviated this problem. DFOB greatly facilitated U(VI) adsorption into the interlayer of nontronite as a stable U(V

Progress in bioleaching: fundamentals and mechanisms of microbial metal sulfide oxidation - part A.

Bioleaching of metal sulfides is performed by diverse microorganisms. The dissolution of metal sulfides occurs via two chemical pathways, either the thiosulfate or the polysulfide pathway. These are determined by the metal sulfides' mineralogy and their acid solubility. The microbial cell enables metal sulfide dissolution via oxidation of iron(II) ions and inorganic sulfur compounds. Thereby, the metal sulfide attacking agents iron(III) ions and protons are generated. Cells are active either in a planktonic state or attached to the mineral surface, forming biofilms. This review, as an update o

Electrochemical sensor based on N-CQDs/AgNPs/β-CD nanomaterials: Application to simultaneous selective determination of Fe(Ⅱ) and Fe(Ⅲ) irons released from iron supplement in simulated gastric fluid.

Simultaneous selective determination of Fe (Ⅱ) and Fe (Ⅲ) is of great significance to the study of iron ion tracking and release of iron supplement in gastric fluid. In this paper, a composite material (N-CQDs/AgNPs/β-CD) was prepared by a one-pot method. The various characterizations confirmed the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) grew in situ on the surface of nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs), and the β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and AgNPs linked together by Ag-O bonds finally presented gourd-like nanoparticles on the surface of N-CQDs. Then, N-CQDs/AgNPs/β-CD modified glassy carbon electrode

Stimulating biogas production from steam-exploded birch wood using Fenton reaction and fungal pretreatment.

Delignification of steam-exploded birch wood (SEBW) was stimulated using a pretreatment method including Fenton reaction (FR) and fungi. SEBW was employed as a substrate to optimize the Fe(III) and Fe(II) dosage in FR. Maximum iron-binding to SEBW was obtained at pH 3.5. FR pretreatment increased biological methane yields from 257 mL/g vS in control to 383 and 352 mL/ g vS in samples with 0.5 mM Fe(II) and 1.0 mM Fe(III), respectively. Further enzymatic pretreatment using a commercial cellulase cocktail clearly improved methane production rate but only increased the final methane yields by 2-9

Enhanced removal of aqueous Cr(VI) by the in situ iron loaded activated carbon through a facile impregnation with Fe(II) and Fe(VI) two step method: Mechanism study.

In this study, a novel in situ iron-loaded activated carbon (AFPAC) was prepared by a FeSO4/K2FeO4 impregnation and oxidation combination two-step supported on activated carbon for enhanced removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. Cr(VI) removal efficiency greatly increased by AFPAC more than 70% than that of fresh activated carbon (AC), which is due to rich iron oxides formed in situ and the synergistic effect between iron oxides and activated carbon. Cr(VI) adsorption behaviors on AFPAC under different water quality parameters were investigated. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacities f

Graphite accelerate dissimilatory iron reduction and vivianite crystal enlargement.

Biomineralized vivianite induced by dissimilatory iron reduction bacteria (DIRB) has received increasing attention because it alleviates phosphorus crisis and phosphorus pollution simultaneously. However, the relatively small crystal size and low Fe(III) reduction rate restrict the separation and recovery of vivianite. In this study, graphite was selected as additive to enhance vivianite biomineralization with soluble ferric citrate and insoluble hematite as two representative electron acceptors. As soluble ferric citrate provided abundant accessible electron acceptors, relatively inconspicuou

[Effects of Ferrous Sulfate and Ferric Nitrate on Cadmium Transportation in the Rhizosphere Soil-Rice System].

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in the agricultural soils of China is a serious and growing environmental problem that urgently needs to be controlled and completely remediated. The biogeochemical cycles of nitrogen (N), sulfur (S), and iron (Fe), and the coupled cycles of Fe-N and Fe-S have been reported to control Cd transportation in the soil-rice system. Exploring practical remediation strategies for Cd from the perspective of the application of nutrients such as N, S, and Fe for rice growth is expected to obtain farm-specific and state-of-the-art technologies and products to reduce the accumul
