[Accidental circular saw injuries].

Two hundred twenty-six accident reports and medical statements concerning circular-saw injuries were evaluated. All injuries occurred on hands. Left and right hands were hurt share and share alike. Among the 125 isolated one-finger injuries an obvious stepwise decrease in frequency from thumb to little finger and from fingertip to finger basis was found. The more proximal the wound lay, the more frequent a localization diagonal or parallel to finger axis was registered. Most accidents hurt skin or soft tissue. Bone lesions occurred less frequent and were characterized by splinters or fractures

[Injuries caused by accidents with chain saws].

Accident reports and medical statements (a total of 719) concerning chain-saw injuries were evaluated. Chain-saw wounds can be found in all parts of the body, especially the thighs and fingers. The typical chain-saw wound is a multiple superficial laceration, soft tissue wounds are usually heavily bruised and jagged , and bone lesions are rare and superficial. Among 188 finger injuries, only 15 slight bone lesions were seen. The frequency of all injuries decreases as one progresses from the thumb to the little finger and from the finger tip to the finger. The more proximal the isolated finger

Volleyball injuries presenting in casualty: a prospective study.

During 1986, all sports injuries (n = 5222) were prospectively recorded at the two casualty departments in Arhus, Denmark. Volleyball injuries (n = 278) accounted for 5.3% of all sports injuries. An evaluation of the rehabilitation period and the consequences of the injuries was undertaken by questionnaire three years after the injury. The injury incidence was 1.9 injuries/1000 inhabitants/year. Hand, finger, and ankle sprains were the most frequent injuries. Female players had significantly more hand/finger injuries than male players, who incurred more ankle/foot injuries. Knee (6%) and ankle

Mallet finger - management and patient compliance.

BACKGROUND: Mallet finger is a flexion deformity of the finger resulting from injury to the extensor mechanism at the base of the distal phalanx. OBJECTIVE: This article discusses the current clinical assessment and appropriate management of mallet finger injuries. DISCUSSION: Mallet finger usually results from forced flexion of an extended finger. Treatment can be difficult as patient compliance is essential, and if not treated appropriately the injury can lead to permanent deformity. Patients will present with a flexion deformity of, and inability to actively extend, the distal interphalan

MRI of the Fingers: An Update.

OBJECTIVE. The purpose of this article is to review the general guidelines for MRI of the finger and emphasize normal finger anatomy as it relates to abnormalities and injuries. CONCLUSION. Advanced imaging, particularly MRI, is increasingly relied on to make the diagnosis and guide management of finger injuries. It is incumbent on radiologists to understand the complex anatomy of the fingers as well as to be familiar with common injuries and aspects of injuries that affect management in order to meaningfully contribute to patient care.

Open dislocation of the proximal interphalangeal joint of the little finger subsequent to chronic radial collateral ligament injury: a case report of primary ligament reconstruction with a half-slip of the flexor digitorum superficialis: Case Report.

Open dislocation of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint is relatively rare. We report a case of a 32-year-old man who had open dislocation of the PIP joint of the little finger while playing American football. He had a history of chronic radial collateral ligament injury. We reconstructed the radial collateral ligament with a half-slip of the flexor digitorum superficialis tendon.

Collaboration in Hand Surgery: Experiences From Silicone Arthroplasty in Rheumatoid Arthritis, Finger Replantation and Amputation Challenges in Assessing Impairment, Satisfaction, and Effectiveness, Wrist and Radius Injury Surgical Trial, and Surgery of the Ulnar Nerve.

Outcomes research has historically been driven by single-center investigations. However, multicenter studies represent an opportunity to overcome challenges associated with single-center studies, including generalizability and adequate power. In hand surgery, most clinical trials are single-center studies, with few having randomized controls and blinding of both participants and assessors. This pervasive issue jeopardizes the integrity of evidence-based practice in the field. Because healthcare payers emphasize applying the best available evidence to justify medical services, multicenter resea

Mallet Finger.

This article provides an overview of issues associated with traumatic injury to the distal finger that results in extensor tendon disruption or bony avulsion at the base of the distal phalanx. Commonly referred to as mallet finger, drop finger, or baseball finger, terminal extensor tendon injuries are a common presentation to the emergency department. Providers need to be advised of evidence-based management of these extensor tendon injuries in order to prevent decreased function and permanent deformity. Current evidence supports nonoperative interventions, but injuries need to be addressed in

[Correction of post-traumatic adduction insufficiency of the small finger by transposition of the tendon of the extensor indicis muscle].

The m. interosseus palmaris III adducts the small finger. Injuries of this muscle and lesions of the ulnar nerve lead to the small finger assuming an abducted posture. Tendon transposition of the extensor indicis to correct the abducted small finger in patients with injuries and ulnar nerve dysfunction is described.

Finger Proximal Interphalangeal Joint Dislocation.

Finger dislocations are common injuries that are often managed by emergency nurse practitioners. A systematic physical examination following these injuries is imperative to avoid complications. Radiographic views, including the anteroposterior, lateral, and oblique views, are imperative to evaluate these finger dislocations. A dorsal dislocation of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint is the most common finger dislocation type often easily reduced. A volar PIP dislocation can often be difficult to reduce and may result in finger deformity. Finger dislocations should be reduced promptly. Re

The Kleinert modified dorsal finger splint for mallet finger fracture.

Injuries to the hand and digits are commonly seen in the emergency department. Lacerations, contusions, puncture wounds, and fractures comprise the bulk of these injuries. A fracture to the dorsum of the distal phalanx can result in a mallet finger deformity. These fractures must be accurately diagnosed with the proper initial treatment begun. There is some disagreement over the best treatment approach and multiple different splints have been described in the literature. Conservative treatment with a finger splint is most commonly effective. We recommend a modified dorsal finger splint for the

Common finger fractures and dislocations.

Finger fractures and dislocations are common injuries that are often managed by family physicians. A systematic physical examination is imperative to avoid complications and poor outcomes following these injuries. Radiography (commonly anteroposterior, true lateral, and oblique views) is required in the evaluation of finger fractures and dislocations. Dorsal dislocation of the proximal interphalangeal joint is the most common type of finger dislocation. Finger dislocations should be reduced as quickly as possible and concurrent soft tissue injuries treated appropriately. Referral to a hand spe

Current status of ultrasonography of the finger.

The recent development of advanced high-resolution transducers has enabled the fast, easy, and dynamic ultrasonographic evaluation of small, superficial structures such as the finger. In order to best exploit these advances, it is important to understand the normal anatomy and the basic pathologies of the finger, as exemplified by the following conditions involving the dorsal, volar, and lateral sections of the finger: sagittal band injuries, mallet finger, and Boutonnière deformity (dorsal aspect); flexor tendon tears, trigger finger, and volar plate injuries (volar aspect); gamekeeper's thum

[Arm injuries due to sport climbing].

There are 26 large climbing centres and 44 smaller indoor or outdoor climbing walls in The Netherlands at this time. Hand and finger injuries are the most common types of sport climbing injuries. Most injuries are caused by overstraining. Injuries include avulsion fractures, arthrosis, pulley rupture, damage to joint capsule and collateral ligaments, 'gamekeeper's thumb', 'climber's finger', lumbrical shift syndrome, 'climber's elbow', shoulder injuries and nerve compression syndromes. Treatment is usually conservative. Depending on the extent of damage surgical intervention may be indicated.

Analysis of pediatric hand injuries in a tertiary care children's hospital.

Pediatric hand traumas are common injuries in childhood. The incidence and type of injury vary with age. In our country, there are only two publications in which only crush is examined in etiology. In this study, we aimed to develop a strategy to prevent hand injuries by examining pediatric hand injuries according to the child's developmental stage and anatomical region. The data of 493 (315 boys, 178 girls) patients under the age of 18 between 2016 and 2020 were analyzed. Patients were categorized according to etiology and age. Males are more dominant in pediatric hand injuries (63.9%). The m
