INTRODUCTION: Trichotillomania, classified as an impulse control disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, is characterized by the recurrent pulling out of one's hair, resulting in noticeable hair loss. The condition has a varied etiology. Specific serotonin reuptake inhibitors are considered the treatment of choice; however some patients fail to respond to this class of drugs. A few older reports suggest possible benefit from treatment with bupropion.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 23-year-old Asian woman with fluoxetine non- responsive trichotillomania was treated with su

Endocannabinoid analogues exhibit antidepressant and anti-compulsive like effects similar to that of serotonin selective reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) indicating a parallelism between the effects of serotonin and endocannabinoids. Therefore, the present study was designed to investigate the role of endocannabinoids in the antidepressant and anti-compulsive like effect of fluoxetine using mice model of forced swim test (FST) and marble-burying behavior (MBB). The results revealed that intracerebroventricular injections of endocannabinoid analogues, anandamide, a CB(1) agonist (AEA: 1-20 μg/mouse)

OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy of fluoxetine, pill placebo, and Social Effectiveness Therapy for Children (SET-C) for children and adolescents with social phobia.
METHOD: Youths ages 7 to 17 were randomly assigned to one of the treatment conditions. Outcome was evaluated using self-reports, parent ratings, independent evaluator ratings, and behavioral assessment.
RESULTS: Both fluoxetine and SET-C were more efficacious than placebo in reducing social distress and behavioral avoidance and increasing general functioning. SET-C was superior to fluoxetine on each of these measures and was

OBJECTIVE: Depression is frequent, underdiagnosed, and untreated in people with epilepsy. The lack of treatment is partially explained by the concerns over the proconvulsive effects of psychoactive drugs. There are few studies on the effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in adults with epilepsy and none in children. The main purpose of the present study was to analyze the impact of SSRIs on the severity and frequency of seizures in children and adolescents with epilepsy and major depressive disorders. In addition, we also evaluated the efficacy of SSRIs in the treatment of

BACKGROUND: Although depression is highly prevalent in Parkinson disease (PD), little is known about the neural correlates associated with depression and antidepressant treatment in PD.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of fluoxetine and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) using SPECT in patients with PD and depression.
METHODS: Twenty-six patients were enrolled into two groups: One received active rTMS and placebo medication and the other sham rTMS and fluoxetine 20 mg/day. Brain SPECT was performed at baseline and after 2 and 8 weeks.

UNLABELLED: Bulimia nervosa (BN) is a common and disabling psychiatric disorder, which affects mainly young females. The basic therapeutic modalities include pharmacotherapy with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, cognitive behavioural therapy and combined treatment.
AIM: This 12-week open label study was performed to assess the efficacy of buspirone-5-HT1A receptor agonist in the treatment of bulimia, and to compare it with the efficacy of fluoxetine --the standard treatment of BN.
METHOD: We recruited 57 patients, who were assigned to two treatment groups-fluoxetine (n=35) and buspir

OBJECTIVE: There are preclinical data showing that fluoxetine stimulated expression of Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) and its specific tyrosine kinase receptor, and caused neuritic elongation and increased dendritic branching density of CA3 hippocampal pyramidal cell neurons in rodents. The latter effect of fluoxetine has been referred to as neuronal remodeling. In view of this preclinical data, we wondered if specific cognitive measures could serve as novel therapeutic targets for fluoxetine in head-injured patients. Theoretically, fluoxetine-induced "neuronal remodeling" might impr

Severity of psoriasis vulgaris is known to be modified by psychological stress. The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of fluoxetine in the PU VA treatment of psoriasis. Twenty patients with progressive disease having more than thirty per cent body area involvement were included in a randomized, double blinded, placebo- controlled, age and sex matched study. All patients were on PUVA treatment, half of patients were given fluoxetine 20 mgs daily whereas the ten were given placebo. Assessment was done by Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) scoring after every 5 exposures of P

Depression is treated by a great variety of antidepressant treatments. SSRIs (such as fluoxetine) are well known: it is, however, sure that further progress is needed and the search for antidepressants with other mechanisms of action (such as tianeptine) or different efficacy is still of interest. A multinational study compared tianeptine with fluoxetine in 387 patients with Depressive Episode, or Recurrent Depressive Disorder, or Bipolar Affective Disorder (ICD-10), in a double-blind parallel group design. They were treated for six weeks. At inclusion, no significant difference between groups

Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) with demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of major depressive episodes. Since 1985, it has been evaluated for the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The orbitofrontal cortex and caudate nucleus are cerebral structures believed to be involved in the pathogenesis of OCD, since hyperactivation of these territories in the basal state is corrected upon remission of symptoms induced by therapy with an SSRI or by behavioral psychotherapy. Furthermore, several studies have found abnormalities in serotoninergic transmission

OBJECTIVE: We sought to compare the effects of fluoxetine, imipramine, and nortriptyline on spontaneous and serotonin-activated contractile activity of the uterine rings from midterm and term pregnant rats.
STUDY DESIGN: Uterine rings from timed-pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats on day 14 (midgestation) and day 22 (term gestation) were used for isometric tension recording. Responses to cumulative concentrations of fluoxetine, imipramine, nortriptyline, and serotonin in the absence and presence of the monoamine reuptake inhibitors were studied.
RESULTS: Neither of the monoamine reuptake inhibitors

BACKGROUND: Fluoxetine and its active metabolite norfluoxetine have long half-lives of 4-6 days and 4-16 days, respectively. We postulated that, owing to the long elimination half-life, patients diagnosed with panic disorder might be maintained on fluoxetine taken once a week, after being treated initially with daily doses of fluoxetine.
METHOD: Ten patients with DSM-III-R panic disorder were treated openly with fluoxetine, 20-40 mg daily. Once panic free, these patients were switched to once-weekly dosing of fluoxetine, and dosage was titrated as needed.
RESULTS: All 10 patients successfull

OBJECTIVE: The aims of the paper are to determine whether nutritional counselling is associated with an improvement in bulimic symptomatology, whether this improvement is maintained during post-treatment follow-up, and whether the addition of fluoxetine 3 x 20 mg/day confers additional benefit.
METHOD: Psychological, pharmacological and combined psychopharmacological treatments of bulimia nervosa were reviewed briefly. Sixty-seven patients referred to specialist eating disorder services who fulfilled strict diagnostic criteria were treated with intensive nutritional counselling and randomly a

Naltrexone (NTX) and fluoxetine (FLU) are useful for treating alcoholism and depression, respectively. Furthermore, these afflictions covary. Given the possibility that people might be prescribed NTX and FLU concurrently, we assessed the effects of these two agents on rats' propensity to drink an alcoholic beverage. Rats were given 65 days of access to a sweetened alcoholic beverage and water for 2 hr daily. At first, they took little ethanol, but after 20 days, they took on average 2.0 to 2.5 g/kg of ethanol, daily during the 2-hr session. They also took sufficient water to maintain their hea

Following a 2-week placebo lead-in, schizophrenic patients were randomly assigned to fluoxetine 20 mg/day or placebo added to depot neuroleptic for a 6-week, double blind trial. All patients had received a stable dose of depot neuroleptic for at least 6 months and did not meet criteria for depression. Serum samples were obtained at baseline and at weeks 4 and 6. Scores on the negative symptom subscale of the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) were significantly lower at week 6, controlling for baseline scores, in patients receiving fluoxetine (n = 20) compared to patients receiving placebo

Fluoxetine is a widely used serotonin reuptake inhibitor effective in the treatment of depression. This experiment assessed the potential developmental neurotoxicity of fluoxetine. Sprague-Dawley CD rats were treated once per day on Days 7-20 of gestation with 0, 1, 5, or 12 mg/kg of fluoxetine (free base) dissolved in distilled water. One control group received water by gavage; animals in this group were provided food and water ad libitum. The second control group (PF) also received water by gavage; animals in this group had their food and water restricted by pair-feeding and watering them to
