Emerging Technologies for Investigating Food Consumer Behavior: A Systematic Review.

The evolving nature of food preferences and consumption patterns highlights the need for ongoing research in food consumer behavior. Most existing research relies on traditional methods, like questionnaires, which are often costly, time-consuming, and prone to bias. The increasing integration of emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR), Social Media Analytics (SMA), and Big Data, into the food sector presents novel opportunities to overcome these limitations. This systematic review, conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for System

Assessing the Impact of Removable Prosthetic Restorations on Nutritional Habits in Edentulous Patients Following Surgery for Head and Neck Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Head and neck cancers (HNCs) and their surgical treatment can result in significant functional deficits including impaired masticatory function, dysphagia and dysgeusia, among others. These contribute to nutritional deficits weakening immune responses, increased post-surgical infections and complications. AIM: This study assesses the impact of removable prosthetic restorations on nutritional habits in edentulous patients who have undergone surgery for head and neck cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 44 post-surgical oncology patients and 20 healthy edentulous pati

Harnessing the power of disgust: a randomized trial to reduce high-calorie food appeal through implicit priming.

BACKGROUND: In our increasingly obesogenic environment, in which high-calorie convenience foods are readily available, food choices can drastically affect weight and overall health. Learned food preferences, which are developed through repeated pairings with positively and negatively valenced stimuli, can contribute to obesity susceptibility if positive attitudes toward high-calorie foods are developed. Thus, the modification of automatic associations with food may be a viable strategy to promote healthier eating behaviors. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we investigated the ability of an implicit

Leptin promotes the fat preference associated with low-temperature acclimation in mice.

Although fluctuations in energy metabolism are known to influence intake as well as nutrient selection, there are no definitive reports on how food preferences change with changes in habitat temperature. We investigated the effects of habitat temperature on appetite and food preference and elucidated the underlying mechanism by conducting a feeding experiment and a leptin administration test on mice reared at low temperatures. Our results showed that the increased food intake and HFD preference observed in the 10°C group were induced by decrease in plasma leptin concentration. Then, a leptin a

Insights into plastic food packaging waste sorting behaviour: A focus group study among consumers in Germany.

Despite international efforts to foster the circular economy, plastic waste remains a major environmental problem. In the circular economy, the success of a waste management system depends, inter alia, on consumers properly sorting their plastic waste. Yet mis-sorting of plastic food packaging waste happens routinely. We sought to find out why and to outline the ways consumers prefer to receive information about waste sorting procedures. Tailoring information to consumer preferences can improve the effectiveness of waste management policy. Using the Motivation Opportunity Ability (MOA) framewo

Navigating changing food environments - Transnational perspectives on dietary behaviours and implications for nutrition counselling.

United States (US) migrants are often characterised as experiencing unhealthy nutrition transitions. 'Looking-back' into dietary behaviours and the processes that affect dietary changes before migration may improve counselling interventions. We conducted a qualitative study of an indigenous Zapotecan transnational community based in Monterey, California, and Oaxaca, Mexico. Four focus groups and 29 interviews were conducted with transnational participants concerning health beliefs around and dietary differences between the US and Oaxaca. Analysis focused on nutrition-related themes. The four m

Baseline adjustment in emotion CATA questions: Addressing the bias of initial emotional states and emotional carryover.

Consumers' baseline emotional states prior to food evaluation may influence their subsequent emotional responses, yet this factor is rarely considered in food-related emotional research using Check-All-That-Apply (CATA) measurement. This study incorporated baseline emotion questions prior to each sample tasting to investigate whether baseline states influence CATA responses and how baseline states change during sequential tasting. A within-subjects design was employed to compare emotional responses with and without baseline measurement across two independent studies involving different food ma

Do bumble bees make optimal nutritional choices?

Nutrition is crucial for bees, impacting their health, survival, and pollination performance in ecosystems and agriculture. Bees get essential nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins, and minerals, primarily from nectar and pollen. Many bee species are experiencing declines linked partially to nutritional stress, often exacerbated by climate change, pesticides, and pathogens, highlighting the need to understand and support optimal bee nutrition to mitigate these stressors. Bumble bees, such as Bombus impatient and Bombus terrestris, essential pollinators in agriculture, are

The effect of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on food choice-related self-control in patients with severe, enduring anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) pursue low-fat, low-calorie diets even when in a state of emaciation. These maladaptive food choices may involve fronto-limbic circuitry associated with cognitive control, habit, and reward. We assessed whether high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) influenced food-related choice behavior in patients with severe, enduring (SE)-AN. METHOD: Thirty-four females with SE-AN completed a Food Choice Task before and after 20 sessions of real or sham rTMS treatment and at a

Field evaluation of some bait additives against Indian crested porcupine (Hystrix indica) (Rodentia: Hystricidae).

This research study evaluated the effect of different additives on the bait consumption by Indian crested porcupine, a serious forest and agricultural pest, under field conditions. Different additives (saccharin, common salt, bone meal, fish meal, peanut butter, egg yolk, egg shell powder, yeast powder, mineral oil and coconut oil) at 2 and 5% each were tested for their relative preference, using groundnut-maize (1:1) as basic bait. All the additives were tested under a no-choice test pattern. For control tests, no additive was mixed with the basic bait. Saccharin at 5% concentration significa

Conditioned taste aversion and drugs of abuse: history and interpretation.

Conditioned taste aversion (CTA) learning describes a phenomenon wherein an animal learns to avoid consumption of a particular taste or food following its pairing with an aversive stimulus. Although initially demonstrated with radiation and classical emetics, CTAs have also been shown with drugs of abuse. The ability of rewarding drugs to support CTA learning was described as paradoxical by many investigators, and a number of attempts have been made to resolve this paradox. The present review offers a historical perspective on the CTA literature with a particular focus on CTAs induced by self-

Naloxone's anorectic effect is dependent upon the relative palatability of food.

It has been suggested that opioids modify food intake by enhancing palatability. In the present series of studies we evaluated the effect of naloxone on food intake of a preferred food (chocolate chip cookies), normal rat chow, and an "aversive" food (high fiber chow). We found that naloxone decreased 18- and 48-h deprivation-induced intake of chocolate chip cookies much more potently than that of chow, when these foods were presented on separate occasions. When these foods were presented concurrently, this difference in naloxone's potency was no longer apparent. When rats were offered high fi

Health literacy as a moderator of menu labeling effects on fast-food ordering: an online randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether functional health literacy moderates the effects of menu labeling formats on fast-food ordering behavior. METHODS: A total of 2829 US adults completed an online randomized controlled survey in 2022. Participants viewed 1 of 8 menus in a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design varying calorie labels (present/absent), sodium stoplight icons (present/absent), and "all-natural" claims (present/absent), then selected an entrée, side, beverage, and optional dessert. Linear regression models tested main and interaction effects of labeling formats and functional health literacy on t

A new animal model of binge eating: key synergistic role of past caloric restriction and stress.

Dieting and stress are important in the etiology and maintenance of eating disorders, and dieting strongly predicts stress-induced overeating in humans. We hypothesized that caloric restriction and stress interact in a unique manner to promote binge eating. To test this hypothesis, a group of young female rats were cycled through a restriction period (4 days of 66% of control food intake) followed by 6 days of free feeding prior to being stressed by acute foot shock. After three of these cycles, the food intake of rats exposed only to restriction (R), or only to stress (S), did not differ from

Parents' perspectives on their children's school lunches in primary schools.

School lunches play an important role in children's dietary intake, and in primary schools in the UK, children and/or parents (on children's behalf) select school lunches from several options on a menu. Schools that utilise an online pre-order system enable pupils and/or parents to choose school lunches via a website or mobile application. This study aimed to understand parents' perspectives and perceptions of their children's school lunches and online pre-ordering. Semi-structured focus group and individual interviews were conducted with parents of children at primary school. Discussions were

Neural Representations of Food-Related Attributes in the Human Orbitofrontal Cortex during Choice Deliberation in Anorexia Nervosa.

Decisions about what to eat recruit the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and involve the evaluation of food-related attributes such as taste and health. These attributes are used differently by healthy individuals and patients with disordered eating behavior, but it is unclear whether these attributes are decodable from activity in the OFC in both groups and whether neural representations of these attributes are differentially related to decisions about food. We used fMRI combined with behavioral tasks to investigate the representation of taste and health attributes in the human OFC and the role of

Eating habits and preferences among the student population of the Complutense University of Madrid.

OBJECTIVE: Studying eating habits can aid in the design of specific measures that reduce the negative effects of an unhealthy diet on health. In this context, the aim of the present study was to examine the eating habits and food preferences of students and their level of satisfaction with the catering services of the university. DESIGN: Survey conducted during 2011 using a questionnaire that asked participants abut their sex, age and frequency of use of catering services placed on campus. Participants were also asked about their level of satisfaction with five aspects (hygiene, quality, tast

Chocolate: food or drug?

Although addictive behavior is generally associated with drug and alcohol abuse or compulsive sexual activity, chocolate may evoke similar psychopharmacologic and behavioral reactions in susceptible persons. A review of the literature on chocolate cravings indicates that the hedonic appeal of chocolate (fat, sugar, texture, and aroma) is likely to be a predominant factor in such cravings. Other characteristics of chocolate, however, may be equally as important contributors to the phenomena of chocolate cravings. Chocolate may be used by some as a form of self-medication for dietary deficiencie
