BACKGROUND: Cerebral palsy (CP) children present complex and heterogeneous motor disorders that cause gait deviations. Clinical gait analysis (CGA) is used to identify, understand and support the management of gait deviations in CP. Children with CP often use ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) to facilitate and optimize their walking ability. The aim of this study was to assess whether the gait deviation index (GDI) and the gait variability index (GVI) results can reflect the changes of spatio-temporal and kinematic gait parameters in spastic hemiplegic CP children wearing AFO.
METHOD: The study group

BACKGROUND: Individuals with subacute severe hemiplegia often undergo alternate gait training to overcome challenges in achieving walking independence. However, the ankle joint setting in a knee-ankle-foot orthosis (KAFO) depends on trunk function or paralysis stage for alternate gait training with a KAFO. The optimal degree of ankle joint freedom in a KAFO and the specific ankle joint conditions for effective rehabilitation remain unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of different degrees of freedom of the ankle joint on center-of-pressure (CoP) parameters and muscle

BACKGROUND: Elevated patellofemoral joint stress has been associated with patellofemoral osteoarthritis (PFOA). Changes in lower limb kinematics, such as excessive femoral adduction and internal rotation and excessive rearfoot eversion during the stance phase of functional activities, may increase patellofemoral stress. There is a lack of studies that assess the effects of interventions for controlling femur and subtalar joint movements during functional activities on self-reported measures in individuals with PFOA. Thus, the primary aim of the study is to determine the immediate effects of th

BACKGROUND: Foot orthoses are commonly used for the management of excessive foot pronation in people with pes planovalgus. However, results are inconsistent due to variability in orthosis geometrical designs. This systematic review with meta-analysis aimed to classify and investigate the effects of foot orthoses, based on their design, in terms of lower limb kinematics and kinetics in people with pes planovalgus.
METHODS: Electronic databases were searched up until August 2017. Peer-reviewed journal studies including adult participants with flexible pes planovalgus and reporting kinematics an

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Passive dynamic ankle-foot orthoses have potential to facilitate return to running after a lower limb trauma. However, transitioning patients to new movement patterns that enhance passive dynamic ankle-foot orthoses benefits can pose a challenge. The purpose of this case study was to report biomechanical and functional outcomes for a patient utilizing a passive dynamic ankle-foot orthoses following completion of a session-based, midfoot strike run training program.
CASE DESCRIPTION AND METHODS: A patient using a passive dynamic ankle-foot orthoses to run due to surgica

BACKGROUND: Foot orthoses are commonly used to correct for foot alterations and especially address excessive foot pronation in individuals with flatfeet. In recent years, 3D printing has taken a key place in orthotic manufacturing processes as it offers more options and can be patient specific. Hence, the purpose of this study was to evaluate whether stiffness of 3D printed foot orthoses and a newly designed rearfoot posting have an effect on lower limb kinematics and kinetics in individuals with flatfeet.
METHODS: Nineteen patients with flexible flatfeet were provided two pairs of customized

BACKGROUND: Flexible flatfoot disturbs the load distribution of the foot. Various external supports are used to prevent abnormal plantar loading in flexible flatfoot. However, few studies have compared the effects of different external supports on plantar loading in flexible flatfoot. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of elastic taping, nonelastic taping, and custom-made foot orthoses on plantar pressure-time integral and contact area in flexible flatfoot.
METHODS: Twenty-seven participants with flexible flatfoot underwent dynamic pedobarographic analysis while barefo

The purpose of this case series was to describe an alternative resting ankle-foot orthosis for range of motion maintenance in patients who were intolerant or inappropriate for traditional heel-relief ankle-foot orthoses due to impaired soft tissue integrity of the posterior lower leg or heel post major burn injury. Anterior panel ankle-foot orthoses were fabricated on 2 pediatric patients aged 8 and 11 years with major burn injuries. Both patients experienced improvements in dorsiflexion range of motion to at least 0°. Neither patient experienced adverse effects that could be attributed to the

Orthotic management is helpful in the treatment of most orthopedic conditions involving the rearfoot, including plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendon disorders, posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, flatfoot, ankle sprains, and problems associated with diabetes, arthritis, and equinus disorders. A review of the effectiveness of orthoses in the treatment of these conditions is presented here. An in-depth analysis of the orthotic management of plantar fasciitis and a critical review of foot orthoses for the pronated foot are presented. Also discussed are the rationale and effectiveness of the tensio

BACKGROUND: War-related traumas can lead to orthopedic and neurological disorders in victims. However, the scope of such disorders may expand months or even years after the trauma. Orthotic treatment as a rehabilitation process aims to enable people with disabilities to reach and maintain their optimal physical, sensory, intellectual, psychological, and social functional levels. This study aimed to investigate the rate of using orthoses among Iranian veterans with neuromuscular and skeletal disorders of the ankle and foot. Furthermore, the priorities of orthotic treatment in those veterans wer

Background: Running-related injuries are often associated with biomechanical inefficiencies, particularly in the sagittal and frontal planes. This study evaluates the effects of three interventions-reduced heel-to-toe drop (HTD) shoes, increased cadence, and inversion foot orthoses-on key kinematic parameters: ankle dorsiflexion, knee flexion, and hip adduction (measured at foot strike and at their respective peak joint angles during the stance phase). Methods: Nineteen recreational runners (ten males and nine females; mean ± SD: age 26.4 ± 4.3 years; height 174.2 ± 7.8 cm; weight 68.3 ± 9.6 k

INTRODUCTION:: Little information exits concerning the effect, if any, foot orthoses have upon how the foot is loaded during normal walking. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a difference in the initiation of forefoot loading with different densities of foot orthoses. METHODS:: Ten volunteers (5 men, 5 women) between the age of 23 and 43 years (mean=30.3 yrs) participated in this study. None of the subjects had a history of congenital deformity, hallux valgus, malleolar torsion or a history of injury or pain to either lower extremity 12 months prior to the start of the in
