Kinetics and full body kinematics were measured in ten elite goalkeepers diving to save high and low balls at both sides of the goal, aiming to investigate their starting position, linear and angular momentum, and legs' contribution to end-performance. Our results showed that goalkeepers adopted a starting position with a stance width of 33 ± 1% of leg length, knee flexion angle of 62 ± 18° and hip flexion angle of 63 ± 18°. The contralateral leg contributed more than the ipsilateral leg to COM velocity (p < 0.01), both for the horizontal (2.7 ± 0.1 m·s-1 versus 1.2 ± 0.1 m·s-1) and for the ve

American football athletes are routinely exposed to sub-concussive impacts over the course of the season. This study sought to examine the effect of a season of American football on plasma tau, a potential marker of axonal damage. Nineteen National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) football athletes underwent serial blood sampling over the course of the 2014-2015 season at those times in which the number and magnitude of head impacts likely changed. Non-contact sport controls (NCAA men's swim athletes; n = 19) provided a single plasma sample for comparison. No significant differences were

This prospective cohort study described return-to-play (RTP) data for different types of muscle injuries in male elite-level football players in Europe. Eighty-nine European professional teams were followed between 2001 and 2013. Team medical staff recorded individual player exposure and time-loss injuries. A total of 17,371 injuries occurred, including 5603 (32%) muscle injuries. From 2007, we received results from 386 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations, and radiological grading was performed. A negative MRI was associated with shorter recovery time (6 ± 7 days). Lay-off days were

BACKGROUND: Injury among soccer referees is rarely studied, especially with regard to differences in the quality level of the refereeing. Additionally, we have found no study that has reported injury occurrence during official physical fitness testing for soccer referees. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency, type and consequences of match-related and fitness-testing related injuries among soccer referees of different competitive levels.
METHODS: We studied 342 soccer referees (all males; mean age 32.9 ± 5.02 years). The study was retrospective, and a self-administered quest

BACKGROUND: Injuries to the hip account for approximately 10% of all injuries in football, but definitive diagnosis is often challenging. Although these injuries are often uncomplicated contusions or strains, intra-articular lesions are increasingly found to be sources of hip pain.
PURPOSE: The objective was to define the incidence and etiologic factors of intra- and extra-articular hip injuries in the National Football League (NFL).
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiology study.
METHODS: The NFL Injury Surveillance System was used to define all hip-related injuries from 1997 to 2006. Injuri

In brief: The authors analyzed 1,877 high school football injuries to determine differences between game and practice injuries. The results indicate that games are more dangerous per time unit of exposure than practice. Significantly more contusions, especially to the trunk, occurred during games, and strains occurred more frequently during practice. Quarterbacks sustained more injuries to the neck, shoulder, chest, and feet in games. Linebackers injured ankles more often in games, and wide receivers injured them more in practice.

OBJECTIVE: Investigate the relationships between concussion history and years of football participation (repetitive head impact proxy) with alcohol use across multiple decades in former professional football players.
METHODS: Participants (n = 348; mean age = 49.0 ± 9.4) completed health questionnaires in 2001 and 2019, which included self-reported concussion history and years of participation. Alcohol use frequency and amount per occasion were reported for three timepoints: during professional career, 2001, and 2019. Ordinal logistic regression models were fit to test associations of concuss

BACKGROUND: The age of first exposure (AFE) to American football participation is a growing concern for late-life function. Mixed evidence exists surrounding AFE and may be attributed to varied methods employed across studies.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations between AFE to American football participation with measures of cognitive, behavioral, and physical function and brain-related medical diagnoses across age categories among former National Football League players.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 1784 former players (age: 52.3 ± 16.3 years, AFE: 11.3 ± 2.9 years,

OBJECTIVES: To determine the rates of muscle strain injury recurrence over time after return to play in Australian football and to quantify risk factors.
METHODS: We analysed Australian Football League player data from 1992 to 2014 for rates of the four major muscle strain injury types (hamstring, quadriceps, calf and groin) diagnosed by team health professionals. Covariates for analysis were: recent history (≤8 weeks) of each of the four muscle strains; non-recent history (>8 weeks) of each; history of hip, knee anterior cruciate ligament, knee cartilage, ankle sprain, concussion or lumbar i

A better insight into injuries in elite-youth football may inform prevention strategies. The purpose of this prospective cohort study was to investigate the frequency, incidence, and pattern of time-loss injuries in an elite male football academy, exploring injuries in relation to age and maturation status. Across four consecutive playing seasons, playing exposure and injuries to all academy players (U'9 to U'21) were recorded by club medical staff. Maturation status at the time of injury was also calculated for players competing in U'13 to U'16 aged squads. Time-loss injury occurrence and mat

Introduction Injuries sustained by professional athletes can severely impact seasonal performance and future abilities. The aim of this study was to characterize the impact of phalanx, thumb, metacarpal, and carpal injuries on the performance of athletes in the National Football League (NFL). Analyzing outcomes for football players is significant because the functional demands of each position vary widely. Methods NFL players who sustained phalanx, thumb, metacarpal, or carpal fractures from the 2012-2013 to 2022-2023 seasons were identified using the public database Pro Sports Transactions. P

Despite recent growth of women's football, concerns about players' working conditions persist. Therefore, this scoping review aimed to summarise and map current evidence on working conditions in elite women's football. Seven databases were searched from 1 January 2000 to 8 May 2025). Records were included if they described working conditions (factors that can influence players' performance, health, and/or well-being) in elite women's football (participating in the highest or second highest domestic league or with a national team). Primary research articles and grey literature (e.g. theses, org

The objectives of this study were to examine youth football athletes' individual head acceleration event (HAEs) exposure, explore athletes' perspectives and experiences playing youth football, and investigate relationships between their perspectives and HAE exposure. Thirteen middle-school-aged football athletes wore instrumented mouthpieces to measure HAEs for 1 season and participated in a one-on-one interview, discussing motivations, mental focus, safety, and perceptions of contact. Kinematic data were integrated with qualitative data using triangulation to examine relationships between ath

IMPORTANCE: Concussion is a high-profile and important brain injury, yet the on-pitch assessment of concussion in football (soccer) remains challenging due to the absence of a standardized, evidence-based assessment protocol that can be completed within a time-restrained on-pitch football-match environment. The objective of this study was to develop a football-specific, standardized on-pitch concussion assessment protocol informed by research evidence and expert opinion using an international consensus process and steering committee deliberation, which included medical experts from each of the

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether National Football League (NFL) players diagnosed with a concussion have an increased risk of injury after return to football.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study analysed the hazard of subsequent time-loss lower extremity (LEX) or any musculoskeletal injury among NFL players diagnosed with a concussion in 2015-2021 preseason or regular season games compared with: (1) all non-concussed players participating in the same game and (2) players with time-loss upper extremity injury. Cox proportional hazards models were adjusted for number of injuries and concussions i
