Variability of stepping characteristics in sauropods.

Introduction In quadrupeds, the motor repertoire of the forelimbs is typically more diverse than that of the hindlimbs due to more pronounced supraspinal control. This greater supraspinal control may manifest as lesser automaticity in forelimb movements during a relatively simple motor task, such as locomotion. The degree of automaticity can be estimated by the variability of certain movement parameters. However, such variability is rarely assessed separately for the forelimbs and hindlimbs. Sauropods appear to be the only group of animals for which, based on available data, it is possible to

Withers vertical movement symmetry is useful for locating the primary lame limb in naturally occurring lameness.

BACKGROUND: During orthopaedic assessment of lame horses, a head nod is commonly present in both primary forelimb and hindlimb lame horses. Additional motion metrics that could assist clinicians in correctly differentiating between these two scenarios would be of great clinical value. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this study was to examine whether withers movement asymmetry can be used in a clinical setting to distinguish primary forelimb lameness from compensatory head movement asymmetry due to primary hindlimb lameness. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective, multicentre study. METHODS: Movem

The effect of limb amputation on standing weight distribution in the remaining three limbs in dogs.

Despite the fact that limb amputation is a commonly performed procedure in veterinary medicine, quantitative data regarding outcomes are lacking. The intention of this study was to evaluate the effect of limb amputation on weight distribution to the remaining three limbs at a stance in dogs. Ten dogs with a prior forelimb amputation and ten dogs with a prior hindlimb amputation; all of which had no history of orthopaedic or neural disease in the remaining three limbs were included in the study. Standing weight bearing was evaluated with a commercial stance analyzer in all dogs. Five valid tria

Evidence for constriction of canine prenodal lymphatic vessels by vasoactive agents and carotid occlusion.

We measured pressure in a prenodal lymphatic in the canine forelimb during constant flow pump-perfusion of the brachial artery. We made bolus i.a. injections of 1.0 micrograms angiotensin II, norepinephrine, bombesin, or bradykinin, 20 micrograms 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT), or occluded the carotid arteries. Norepinephrine, 5HT, or carotid occlusion produced regular rises in forelimb perfusion pressure and in lymphatic pressure. Angiotensin II increased forelimb arterial pressures but increased lymphatic pressure in only four experiments. Bombesin increased artery pressures but did not affect ly

Movement representation in the dorsal and ventral premotor areas of owl monkeys: a microstimulation study.

We used intracortical microstimulation to investigate the lateral premotor cortex and neighboring areas in 14 hemispheres of owl monkeys, focusing on the somatotopic distribution of evoked movements, thresholds for forelimb movements, and the relative representation of proximal and distal forelimb movements. We elicited movements from the dorsal and ventral premotor areas (PMD, PMV), the caudal and rostral divisions of primary motor cortex (M1c, M1r), the frontal eye field (FEF), the dorsal oculomotor area (OMD; area 8b), the supplementary motor area (SMA), and somatosensory cortex (areas 3a a

Heterochronic differences of Hoxa-11 expression in Xenopus fore- and hind limb development: evidence for lower limb identity of the anuran ankle bones.

The wrist (carpus) and ankle (tarsus) of most tetrapods, as well as the wrist of anurans, contains relatively small nodular skeletal elements. The anuran tarsus, however, comprises a pair of long bones, the proximal tarsals tibiale and fibulare, which resemble the lower leg bones, tibia and fibula (zeugopodium). In this paper we investigate whether the proximal tarsals of Xenopus are of zeugopodial character identity, i.e. whether they develop under the influence of the same genes that pattern the lower limb. We compare Hoxa-11 expression in the forelimb bud with that in the hind limb bud by w

Delayed spinal cord injury following microchip placement in a dog.

A three-year-old female, entire Yorkshire Terrier dog was examined because it had progressive non-weight-bearing left forelimb lameness and tetraparesis of two weeks duration. Clinical signs were first observed following mating. Examination confirmed non-weight-bearing left forelimb lameness and tetraparesis. Left forelimb muscle atrophy was also noticed. Survey radiography revealed a metallic foreign body consistent with a microchip in close proximity to the left articular facets between the fifth and sixth cervical vertebrae. Computed tomography identified the exact location of the foreign b

Effects of anesthesia of the palmar digital nerves on kinematic gait analysis in horses with and without navicular disease.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of local anesthesia of the palmar digital nerves on forelimb kinematics in Quarter Horses with and without navicular disease. ANIMALS: 12 adult Quarter Horses; 5 clinically normal (sound) and 7 with navicular disease. PROCEDURE: Kinematic measurements were made on adult horses trotting on a treadmill, before and after palmar digital nerve block (PDNB). Twenty-three displacement, joint angle, and temporal gait measurements of the right forelimb and head were made for 5 strides in each horse. Initial (before local anesthesia) right forelimb measurements were

Vagus Nerve Stimulation Enhances Stable Plasticity and Generalization of Stroke Recovery.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Chronic impairment of the arm and hand is a common consequence of stroke. Animal and human studies indicate that brief bursts of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) in conjunction with rehabilitative training improve recovery of motor function after stroke. In this study, we tested whether VNS could promote generalization, long-lasting recovery, and structural plasticity in motor networks. METHODS: Rats were trained on a fully automated, quantitative task that measures forelimb supination. On task proficiency, unilateral cortical and subcortical ischemic lesions were adminis

Traumatic disruption of the suspensory apparatus in foals.

Traumatic disruption of the suspensory apparatus is a catastrophic injury in the horse. Although this injury has been described in the adult, little information is available in the foal. This paper describes 3 foals with metacarpophalangeal joint instability caused by traumatic disruption of the suspensory apparatus. Two foals had biaxial proximal sesamoid fractures in a single forelimb, and 1 foal had avulsion of the distal sesamoidean ligaments in 1 forelimb plus biaxial proximal sesamoid fractures in the other forelimb. The foals with single forelimb involvement were managed with splints, a

Potentiation of acetazolamide induced ectrodactyly in Wistar rats by vasoactive agents and physical clamping of the uterus.

The vasoactive agents serotonin, ergotamine, and nicotine potentiate acetazolamide induced forelimb ectrodactyly (missing digits) in Wistar rats. These vasoactive agents administered alone do not produce forelimb ectrodactyly and are not known to be inhibitors of carbonic anhydrase. Additionally, physical clamping of the uterine horns in addition to oral acetazolamide administration increases the frequency of forelimb ectrodactyly, suggesting that decreased uterine blood flow can potentiate acetazolamide teratogenesis. Since the vasoactive agents used in this study are reported to possess uter

A novel technique of ultrasound-guided brachial plexus block in calves.

An interventional ultrasound technique to increase the safety of surgical treatment of the calf forelimb was tested. First, the brachial plexus was evaluated using ultrasonography and then 2% lidocaine was injected under ultrasound guidance. Ultrasonically, the brachial plexus appeared as multiple hypoechoic areas surrounded by a hyperechoic rim or a hyperechoic structure characterised by multiple discontinuous lines. It was located between the omotransverse muscle and axillary artery and vein. The sensitive effect in the forelimb was seen mainly in the area supplied by the musculocutaneous ne

Crossing nerve transfer restores limb movement by reorganizing the cortico-rubro-spinal pathway in peripheral nerve injury.

Peripheral nerves connect the central nervous system to the limbs. Crossing nerve transfer (CNT) promotes motor recovery after unilateral brain injury by inducing functional reorganization in central neural circuits. However, how specific circuits reorganize following peripheral nerve injury (PNI) under intact central pathways remains unclear. This study examines cortical neural circuit changes associated with motor recovery using a PNI mouse model with unilateral brachial plexus injury. CNT effectively restores motor function in the impaired forelimb. This cross-transferred pathway reconstruc

Treadmill Stepping in Newborn Rats.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of treadmill belt speed on mechanically-induced (tail-pinch) and pharmacologically-induced (quipazine, a 5HT 2A agonist) stepping behavior in one-day old rats. On postnatal day 1 (P1), male rat pups were tested on one of four moving treadmill belt speeds. Stepping was induced using a tail-pinch and quipazine administration to examine real-time adaptations on belt speeds. For tail-pinch-induced stepping in the forelimbs and hindlimbs, there was a significant effect of time but not belt speed. Step cycle duration was significantly shorte

Differential limb scaling in the american alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) and its implications for archosaur locomotor evolution.

Bipedalism evolved multiple times within archosaurs, and relatively shorter forelimbs characterize both crocodyliforms and nonavian dinosaurs. Analysis of a comprehensive ontogenetic sequence of specimens (embryo to adult) of the sauropodomorph Massospondylus has shown that bipedal limb proportions result from negative forelimb allometry. We ask, is negative forelimb allometry a pattern basal to archosaurs, amplified in certain taxa to produce bipedalism? Given the phylogenetic position of extant crocodylians and their relatively shorter forelimb, we tested the hypothesis that prevalent negati

Successful Treatment of Cutaneous Curvularia geniculata, Nocardia niigatensis, and Viral Papillomatosis in a Dog During the Therapeutic Management of Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia.

Opportunistic infections represent a major cause of mortality in immunocompromised patients. Discontinuation or reduction of immunosuppressive medications is recommended with the development of opportunistic infections, which may cause a relapse or worsening of the immune-mediated disease. A 7.5-year-old, spayed female great Dane was diagnosed with immune-mediated hemolytic anemia with initial immunosuppressive therapy consisting of oral prednisone, ciclosporin and mycophenolate mofetil. The patient developed diffuse right forelimb pyogranulomatous fungal dermatitis with deep draining tracts 6

Restorative plasticity of dopamine neuronal transplants depends on the degree of hemispheric dominance.

The ability of dopaminergic (DA) transplants to restore complex sensorimotor behaviors in experimental Parkinson's disease is dependent on graft survival and reinnervation and is likely to be further modified by complex functional graft-host interactions. Here, we examined the impact of hemispheric dominance and extensive testing regimes on the functional capabilities of DA transplants to restore skilled forelimb movements in rats with unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine lesions. Interestingly, a near complete recovery was observed in DA-grafted animals that did not exhibit a strong hemispheric later

Pyramidal actions in identified radial motornuclei of the cat.

This study aimed to establish the projection from the corticospinal tract (CST) to the motoneurones innervating the deep radial (DR) forelimb muscles. In the anaesthetized cat stimulation of the contralateral pyramid and intracellular recording from identified forelimb motoneurones was used. A train of pyramidal stimuli evoked disynaptic EPSPs in DR motoneurones. The effects were very similar in the different nuclei. Pyramidal IPSPs had a slightly longer latency and occurred in most cases together with disynaptic EPSPs. It is suggested that the inhibitory actions to the distal forelimb are pre

Ipsilateral-Dominant Control of Limb Movements in Rodent Posterior Parietal Cortex.

It is well known that the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and frontal motor cortices in primates preferentially control voluntary movements of contralateral limbs. The PPC of rats has been defined based on patterns of thalamic and cortical connectivity. The anatomical characteristics of this area suggest that it may be homologous to the PPC of primates. However, its functional roles in voluntary forelimb movements have not been well understood, particularly in the lateralization of motor limb representation; that is, the limb-specific activity representations for right and left forelimb moveme
