Analysis of an automated background correction method for cardiovascular MR phase contrast imaging in children and young adults.

BACKGROUND: Phase contrast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a powerful tool for evaluating vessel blood flow. Inherent errors in acquisition, such as phase offset, eddy currents and gradient field effects, can cause significant inaccuracies in flow parameters. These errors can be rectified with the use of background correction software. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the performance of an automated phase contrast MRI background phase correction method in children and young adults undergoing cardiac MR imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of patients undergoing routi

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) transport from biosolids-amended soils: An experimental and numerical approach.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) do not mineralize in conventional wastewater treatment processes and accumulate in effluents and biosolids. Land-application of biosolids improves soil health; however, PFAS may leach from applied biosolids posing a threat to underlying groundwater systems. In general, transport mechanisms controlling PFAS leaching from biosolids are not fully understood. In this study, two municipal biosolids were mixed with soil at agricultural loading rates and packed in saturated flow-through columns. Biosolids, biosolids-amended soils (pre- and post-leaching) and

Anti-neuroinflammatory potential of porcine liver decomposition products in improving behavioral abnormalities: Effects on formalin- and LPS-induced inflammation.

Porcine liver decomposition product (PLDP) is a functional food that enhances delayed memory recall and frontal lobe function in humans and exerts antidepressant and anxiolytic effects. In the present study, the previously unexplored anti-inflammatory effects of PLDP were investigated both in vitro and in vivo. The effects of PLDP on interleukin (IL)-1β production were examined in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated Raw 264.7 cells and on their transition to an M1 or M2 phenotype. The effects of PLDP administered 30 min before the initiation of a formalin-induced inflammation-related behavior

Bioaerosol sampling by a personal rotating cup sampler CIP 10-M.

High concentrations of bioaerosols containing bacterial, fungal and biotoxinic matter are encountered in many workplaces, e.g. solid waste treatment plants, waste water treatment plants and sewage networks. A personal bioaerosol sampler, the CIP 10-M (M-microbiologic), has been developed to measure worker exposure to airborne biological agents. This sampler is battery operated; it is light and easy to wear and offers full work shift autonomy. It can sample much higher concentrations than biological impactors and limits the mechanical stress on the microorganisms. Biological particles are colle

Numerical and neural-network analysis of Casson hybrid nanofluid flow and heat transfer in a sinusoidally stenosed artery.

We investigate unsteady flow and heat transfer in a blood-based Casson hybrid nanofluid containing Al2O3 and Fe3O4 nanoparticles as it passes through a rigid artery with a mild sinusoidal stenosis. The formulation includes a transverse magnetic field, Hall-current effects, viscous dissipation, and Joule heating. Under the long-wavelength approximation, the governing equations reduce to local radial initial-boundary-value problems. These problems are mapped onto a fixed domain and solved with a forward-time central-space (FTCS) scheme that uses a separate stencil at the centreline. Particular a

Multimodal characterization of age-dependent neurovascular phenotypes in Notch3R170C CADASIL mice by ultra-high-field MRI and histological analyses.

Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) is a hereditary small vessel disease caused by mutations in NOTCH3 and characterized by progressive neurovascular alterations. Although magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can detect vascular and white matter abnormalities in CADASIL, the relationship between imaging findings and underlying cellular and molecular changes remains incompletely understood. Here, we established an integrative, multi-scale framework combining ultra-high-field MRI, quantitative histology, and single-cell RNA sequencing

Isolation, Purification, and Culture of Primary Murine Hepatic Stellate Cells: An Update.

In the healthy liver, quiescent hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) are found in the perisinusoidal space (i.e., the space of Dissé) in close proximity to endothelial cells and hepatocytes. HSCs represent 5-8% of the total number of liver cells and are characterized by numerous fat vacuoles that store vitamin A in the form of retinyl esters. Upon liver injury caused by different etiologies, HSCs become activated and acquire a myofibroblast (MFB) phenotype in a process called transdifferentiation. In contrast to quiescent HSC, MFB become highly proliferative and are characterized by an imbalance in e

Rats are protected from the stress of chronic pressure overload compared with mice.

The goal of this investigation was to compare the effects of chronic (4 wk) transverse aortic constriction (TAC) in Sprague-Dawley rats and C57BL/6J mice. TAC, after 1 day, induced similar left ventricular (LV) pressure gradients in both rats (n = 7) and mice (n = 7) (113 ± 5.4 vs. 103 ± 11.5 mmHg), and after 4 wk, the percent increase in LV hypertrophy, as reflected by LV/tibial length (51% vs 49%), was similar in rats (n = 12) and mice (n = 12). After 4 wk of TAC, LV systolic and diastolic function were preserved in TAC rats. In contrast, in TAC mice, LV ejection fraction decreased by 31% co

Manikin-based performance evaluation of N95 filtering-facepiece respirators challenged with nanoparticles.

Protection of the human respiratory system from exposure to nanoparticles is becoming an emerging issue in occupational hygiene. The potential adverse health effects associated with particles of approximately 1-100 nm are probably greater than submicron or micron-sized particles. The performance of two models of N95 half-facepiece-filtering respirators against nano-sized particles was evaluated at two inhalation flow rates, 30 and 85 l min(-1), following a manikin-based protocol. The aerosol concentration was measured outside and inside the facepiece using the Wide-Range Particle Spectrometer.

Isotropically weighted intravoxel incoherent motion brain imaging at 7T.

Perfusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a promising non-invasive technique providing insights regarding the brain's microvascular architecture in vivo. The scalar perfusion metrics can be used for quantitative diagnostics of various brain abnormalities, in particular, in the stroke cases and tumours. However, conventional MRI-based perfusion approaches such as dynamic contrast-enhanced perfusion imaging or arterial spin labelling have a few weaknesses, for instance, contrast agent deposition, low signal-to-noise ratio, limited temporal and spatial resolution, and specific absorption rate

Contribution of facial feature dimensions and velocity parameters on particle inhalability.

To examine whether the actual dimensions of human facial features are important to the development of a low-velocity inhalable particulate mass sampling criterion, this study evaluated the effect of facial feature dimensions (nose and lips) on estimates of aspiration efficiency of inhalable particles using computational fluid dynamics modeling over a range of indoor air and breathing velocities. Fluid flow and particle transport around four humanoid forms with different facial feature dimensions were simulated. All forms were facing the wind (0.2, 0.4 m s(-1)), and breathing was simulated with

The industrial food additive, microbial transglutaminase, mimics tissue transglutaminase and is immunogenic in celiac disease patients.

Microbial transglutaminase (mTg) is capable of cross-linking numerous molecules. It is a family member of human tissue transglutaminase (tTg), and is involved in CD. Despite declarations of the safety of mTg for industrial use, direct evidence for immunogenicity of the enzyme is lacking. The serological activity of mTg, tTg, gliadin complexed mTg (mTg neo-epitope) and gliadin complexed tTg (tTg neo-epitope) were studied in 95 pediatric celiac patients (CD), 99 normal children (NC), 79 normal adults (NA) and 45 children with nonspecific abdominal pain (AP). Coating-induced lubrication in granular media: from particle-scale tribology to bulk rheology.

Coated granular materials are involved in numerous industrial processes, including powder handling in pharmaceuticals, additive manufacturing, cement production, and food processing, where surface treatments control flowability, prevent agglomeration, and improve product consistency. Despite their widespread use, the influence of coatings on the collective behavior of granular materials remains poorly understood. While dry granular flows are well described by the μ(I) rheology for frictional, noncohesive particles, many real-world systems involve additional interparticle interactions that fall
