Is There a 'Cancel Culture', and if so, for Whom? Rank-Based Differences in Restrictions on Academic Freedom.

This article investigates the relationship between academic career ranks and restrictions on academic freedom. Drawing on a representative survey of 9083 full-time academics at German higher education institutions, we examine how academics across different career ranks assess their freedom in teaching and research. Although precarious employment conditions and professional hierarchies may suggest otherwise, our findings show that doctoral candidates and postdocs on fixed-term contracts do not report experiencing restrictions on their academic freedom significantly more often compared to tenure

Planting Rights and Feeding Freedom: Navigating the Right to a Vegan Diet in Hospitals and Prisons.

The legal recognition of veganism highlights the evolving landscape of dietary choices and their status under human rights law. This paper examines the legal status of vegan diets under the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), focusing on public institutions such as prisons and hospitals. By analyzing the first relevant cases before the European Court of Human Rights, it explores the protection of vegan diets under Articles 9 (freedom of thought, conscience, and religion) and 14 (prohibition of discrimination) of the ECHR. The paper also considers whether access to a vegan diet relates

External Validation of the FREEDOM Score for Individualized Decision Making Between CABG and PCI.

BACKGROUND: Although randomized trials have established that coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is, on average, the most effective revascularization strategy compared with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in patients with diabetes and multivessel disease (MVD), individual patients differ in many characteristics that can affect the benefits and harms of treatment. The FREEDOM (Future Revascularization Evaluation in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus) score was developed to predict different outcomes with CABG vs PCI on the basis of 8 patient characteristics and the smoking-treatment in

The effects of emotional freedom techniques on coping with premenstrual syndrome: A randomized control trial.

PURPOSE: The present study evaluated the efficacy of Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), commonly called "tapping," for premenstrual (PMS) symptoms. DESIGN AND METHODS: This study was conducted with the participation of 50 nursing students who scored 111 or higher on the Premenstrual Syndrome Scale (PMSS). The students in the experimental group were instructed to apply EFT. FINDINGS: There were statistically significant differences between the mean depressive affect, fatigue, nervousness, sleep-related changes, and swelling subscale scores and the PMSS total scale score of the experimental g

A Freedom of Coxiella burnetii Infection Survey in European Bison (Bison bonasus) in Poland.

Q fever is an important zoonosis caused by the intracellular Gram-negative bacteria Coxiella burnetii. The source of infection are numerous species of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, as well as ticks. The disease is widespread throughout Europe, but the role of wildlife in its epidemiology is poorly understood. The European bison (Bison bonasus) population has been growing European-wide quite dynamically over the last few years. The aim of this study was to determine whether C. burnetii infection occurs in European bison and whether it can be considered an important bacterial reservoi

Water entry of a body which moves in more than six degrees of freedom.

The water entry of a three-dimensional smooth body into initially calm water is examined. The body can move freely in its 6 d.f. and may also change its shape over time. During the early stage of penetration, the shape of the body is approximated by a surface of double curvature and the radii of curvature may vary over time. Hydrodynamic loads are calculated by the Wagner theory. It is shown that the water entry problem with arbitrary kinematics of the body motion, can be reduced to the vertical entry problem with a modified vertical displacement of the body and an elliptic region of contact b

Requirements analysis of a 5 degree of freedom haptic simulator for orthopedic trauma surgery.

There are currently few Virtual Reality simulators for orthopedic trauma surgery. The current simulators provide only a basic recreation of the manual skills involved, focusing instead on the procedural and anatomical knowledge required. One factor limiting simulation of the manual skills is the complexity of adding realistic haptic feedback, particularly torques. This paper investigates the requirements, in terms of forces and workspace (linear and rotational), of a haptic interface to simulate placement of a lag screw in the femoral head, such as for fixation of a fracture in the neck of the

Freedom of movement across the EU: legal and ethical issues for children with chronic disease.

While freedom of movement has been one of the most highly respected human right across the EU, there are various aspects which come into play which still need to be resolved for this to be achieved in practice. One of these key issues is cross border health care. Indeed, there is an increasing awareness of standardisation of health service provision and cross border collaboration in the EU. However, certain groups particularly children may be at risk of suboptimal treatment as a result. We present the case of a child patient which highlights the complexity of this matter spanning family law, h

Neurobiological Determinism versus Human Freedom: Competing Explanatory Models and the Hope for Moral Enhancement.

The "neuromoral" medical explanatory model of antisocial or inadequately prosocial behavior posits a biological cause for what advocates judge to be immoral activity. Proponents of this model hold that immoral behavior is the result of a dysfunction in a network of neural circuits primarily located in the frontal lobes, believed to be the "neurobiological seat" of ethical choice. Advocates encourage medical treatments, such as transcranial direct current stimulation of the prefrontal cortex, to correct brain functional impairments that presumably cause aggressive, risk-affirming, antisocial, o

[Laboratory examinations in forensic medical expertises on crimes against sexual integrity and sexual freedom].

The article presents the results of analysis of 482 forensic biological and forensic cytological expertises on cases of sexual crimes. A presence of different types of such crimes has been noted. Expertises' effectiveness when examining content of vagina, oral cavity and rectum, impression smears and lavages from suspects' genital organs, subungual content of victims and suspects and other objects has been determined. The dependence of expertises' effectiveness on the terms of object removal has been noted. The article presents a number of objects' examination methods (luminescent-microscopic

A New Intraoral Six-Degrees-of-Freedom Jaw Movement Tracking Method Using Magnetic Fingerprints.

We proposed a novel jaw movement tracking method that can measure in six degrees of freedom. The magnetic field generated by a permanent magnet paired with a small, low-power-consumption Hall effect magnetic sensor is used to estimate the relative distance between two objects-in this instance, the lower and upper jaws. By installing a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) orientation sensor in the device, we developed a mouthpiece-type sensing device that can measure voluntary mandibular movements in three-dimensional orientation and position. An evaluation of individuals wearing this device de

Multidisciplinary Identification of the Controversial Freedom Fighter Jörg Jenatsch, Assassinated 1639 in Chur, Switzerland.

Jörg Jenatsch, a leading freedom fighter during the Thirty Year's War in Graubünden, Switzerland, was assassinated on carnival 1639. Jenatsch's controversial biography and the unclear circumstances of his death inspired the formation of various legends, novels and films. In 1959, a skeleton discovered in the cathedral of Chur with remains of wealthy baroque clothing was tentatively attributed to Jenatsch. Here, we reassess the skeleton based on a new exhumation. Our multidisciplinary analysis and the head injuries are consistent with reports of the eyewitnesses of the crime, demonstrating that

Three dimensional vestibular ocular reflex testing using a six degrees of freedom motion platform.

UNLABELLED: The vestibular organ is a sensor that measures angular and linear accelerations with six degrees of freedom (6DF). Complete or partial defects in the vestibular organ results in mild to severe equilibrium problems, such as vertigo, dizziness, oscillopsia, gait unsteadiness nausea and/or vomiting. A good and frequently used measure to quantify gaze stabilization is the gain, which is defined as the magnitude of compensatory eye movements with respect to imposed head movements. To test vestibular function more fully one has to realize that 3D VOR ideally generates compensatory ocular

Exact alpha-error determination for two-stage sampling strategies to substantiate freedom from disease.

Sampling strategies to substantiate freedom from disease are important when it comes to the trade of animals and animal products. When considering imperfect tests and finite populations, sample size calculation can, however, be a challenging task. The generalized hypergeometric formula developed by Cameron and Baldock (1998a) offers a framework that can elegantly be extended to multi-stage sampling strategies, which are widely used to account for disease clustering at herd-level. The achieved alpha-error of such surveys, however, typically depends on the realization of the sample and can diffe

Orthopedic injuries in U.S. casualties treated on a hospital ship during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

From March to May 2003, the USNS Comfort was deployed to the Persian Gulf in support of combat operations for Operation Iraqi Freedom. The onboard orthopedic service treated 58 U.S. casualties during that period. Eighty-seven percent of the injuries were to the appendicular skeleton. Twenty-four percent were battle injuries, and 72% were nonbattle injuries. Patients with battle injuries tended to be younger and required more orthopedic operations than did patients with nonbattle injuries. Moreover, all patients with battle injuries were evacuated to higher echelons for further care, whereas 19

Upper extremity vascular injury: a current in-theater wartime report from Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Past wartime experience and recent civilian reports indicate upper extremity (UE) vascular injury occurs less often and with less limb loss than lower extremity (LE) injury. Given advances in critical care, damage control techniques, and military armor technology, the objective of this evaluation was to define contemporary patterns of UE injury and effectiveness of vascular surgical management in UE vascular injury during Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). From 1 September 2004 through 31 August 2005, 2,473 combat-related injuries were treated at the central echelon III surgical facility in Iraq.

Actuarial survival, freedom from reoperation, and other events after repair of atrioventricular septal defects.

Repair of an atrioventricular septal defect was performed in 134 patients from 1973 to 1985. Interventricular communication was present in 54 (40%) and none was present in 80 (60%). There were 12 hospital deaths (9%; 70% confidence limits 6%-12%). Earlier date of operation (p = 0.03) and younger age at repair (p = 0.005) were incremental risk factors for hospital death after repair of partial atrioventricular septal defect. Smaller size (p = 0.003) and longer cross-clamp time (p = 0.002) were risk factors for hospital death in those patients with complete atrioventricular septal defect. Higher
