Lesion Expansion in Craniofacial Fibrous Dysplasia: Natural History and Indicators of Progression in the Frontal, Zygomatic, and Sphenoid Bones.

Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is characterized by expansile fibro-osseous lesions that may occur in association with endocrinopathies as part of McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS). Craniofacial FD may result in substantial morbidity, including facial asymmetry and compression of vital neurovascular structures. There is a critical need to understand the natural history and risk factors for craniofacial lesion expansion to develop preventative trials and identify candidates for intervention. The purpose of this study was to evaluate expansion rates in periorbital bones (frontal, zygomatic, and sphenoid). P

Application of a bilateral temporal fascia free graft in a dog with multifragmented frontal sinus and nasal bone fracture.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the use of temporal fascia free grafts to treat dorsal open comminuted frontal sinus and nasal fractures. ANIMAL: One Belgian shepherd dog. STUDY DESIGN: Case report METHODS: A 5-year-old spayed female Belgian shepherd was admitted with severe facial deformation due to trauma. A deep, 3 cm wide wound was present between the nose and the frontal sinus. No abnormalities were detected on neurological examination. On computed tomographic examination, comminuted open fractures of the frontal and nasal bones were associated with a severe depression of the dorsal wall and pre

Pott's puffy tumour of the frontal and Parietal bones with subgaleal abscess as a complication of acute sinusitis - a case report.

Acute sinusitis is a frequent medical condition that can affect any age group and may lead infrequently to very serious life-threatening complications. These complications include the spread of infection to frontal and other cranial bones, meninges, and other intracranial structures that require urgent medical actions to prevent mortality and morbidity. We report the case of acute frontal sinusitis in a 14 years old male who presented with fever, severe headache, and fluctuant swelling of the nasal root, and right supraorbital and frontoparietal regions. Imaging studies demonstrated signs of l

The Frontal Bone Window for Transcranial Doppler Ultrasonography in Critically Ill Patients: Validation of a New Approach in the ICU.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The temporal bone window (TBW) for transcranial Doppler (TCD) often fails to insonate the anterior cerebral artery (ACA). The frontal bone window (FBW) has never been evaluated in intensive care units (ICU). The main objective was to determine the ability of the FBW to assess ACA velocities in critically ill patients. METHODS: A prospective study was conducted in two ICUs of the Montpellier University Hospital (France), between November 2014 and September 2016. Adult patients admitted to ICU for brain injury, with a Glasgow Coma Scale score ≤ 13, were enrolled within

Fgfr1 conditional-knockout in neural crest cells induces heterotopic chondrogenesis and osteogenesis in mouse frontal bones.

Most facial bones, including frontal bones, are derived from neural crest cells through intramembranous ossification. Fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 (Fgfr1) plays a pivotal role in craniofacial bone development, and loss of Fgfr1 leads to cleft palate and facial cleft defects in newborn mice. However, the potential role of the Fgfr1 gene in neural crest cell-mediated craniofacial development remains unclear. To investigate the role of Fgfr1 in neural crest cells, we analyzed Wnt1-Cre;Fgfr1flox/flox mice. Our results show that specific knockout of Fgfr1 in neural crest cells induced hetero

Application of resampling techniques to improve the quality of survival analysis risk curves for human frontal bone fracture.

BACKGROUND: In automotive events, head injuries (skull fractures and/or brain injuries) are associated with head contact loading. While the widely-used head injury criterion is based on frontal bone fracture and linear accelerations, injury risk curves were not developed from original datasets. OBJECTIVES: Develop skull fracture-based risk curves for using previously published data and apply resampling techniques to assess their qualities. METHODS: Force, deflection, energy, and stiffness data from thirteen human cadaver head impact tests were used to develop risk curves using parametric sur

First results of frontal sinus obliteration with a synthetic, resorbable and osteoconductive bone graft of ß-tricalcium phosphate.

BACKGROUND: Despite advances in endoscopic sinus surgery, frontal sinus obliteration is still indicated in some cases. Current options for obliteration include autologous and synthetic materials. The use of ß-tricalcium phosphate as a resorbable bone graft substitute is a good alternative for frontal sinus obliteration. This study aimed to report our experience with this material. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of patients who underwent frontal sinus obliteration at our clinic between 2008 and 2013 was performed. Demographic data, indications, previous surgery, and immediate and late c

Loss-of-Function of Gli3 in Mice Causes Abnormal Frontal Bone Morphology and Premature Synostosis of the Interfrontal Suture.

Greig cephalopolysyndactyly syndrome (GCPS) is an autosomal dominant disorder with polydactyly and syndactyly of the limbs and a broad spectrum of craniofacial abnormalities. Craniosynostosis of the metopic suture (interfrontal suture in mice) is an important but rare feature associated with GCPS. GCPS is caused by mutations in the transcription factor GLI3, which regulates Hedgehog signaling. The Gli3 loss-of-function (Gli3(Xt-J/Xt-J)) mouse largely phenocopies the human syndrome with the mice exhibiting polydactyly and several craniofacial abnormalities. Here we show that Gli3(Xt-J/Xt-J) mic

Aneurysmal frontal bone cyst in a child with history of acute lymphoblastic leukemia: a case of rare location and history.

Authors present an 11-year-old female admitted with a 3-month history of painless forehead mass. The mass was located in the left frontal area and was pronounced on inspection and palpation. Neurologic examination revealed no abnormalities. The patient was diagnosed for acute lymphoblastic leukemia 5 years ago and had been treated. The patient was under observation by the pediatric oncology clinic with remission state since 3 years. Brain computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a cystic bone lesion in the right frontal bone. A preoperative diagnosis of myeloproliferative di

Chondromyxoid fibroma of the nasal bone with extension into the frontal and ethmoidal sinuses: report of one case and a review of the literature.

Chondromyxoid fibroma is a rare benign tumor that usually occurs in the long bones. A 50-year-old patient presented with chondromyxoid fibroma of the nasal bone with extension into the frontal and ethmoidal sinuses. This is the fourth case reported to date in the literature. The clinical manifestations of the tumor were very limited, and the appearance at rhinoscopy was misleading. Radiologic imaging showed a soft tissue lesion invading the adjacent bony structures and the dura mater. Surgery was performed by a combined team of otorhinolaryngologists and neurosurgeons, and total excision of th

A novel classification of frontal bone fractures: The prognostic significance of vertical fracture trajectory and skull base extension.

PURPOSE: The broad spectrum of frontal bone fractures, including those with orbital and skull base extension, is poorly understood. We propose a novel classification scheme for frontal bone fractures. METHODS: Maxillofacial CT scans of trauma patients were reviewed over a five year period, and frontal bone fractures were classified: Type 1: Frontal sinus fracture without vertical extension. Type 2: Vertical fracture through the orbit without frontal sinus involvement. Type 3: Vertical fracture through the frontal sinus without orbit involvement. Type 4: Vertical fracture through the frontal s

[Long-term outcome after frontal sinus obliteration with an ionomer bone substitute in the cat. I: Histological results].

BACKGROUND: Osteoplastic frontal sinus surgery in combination with sinus obliteration may occasionally be performed for indications such as severe sinus inflammations, extensive wall fractures involving the nasofrontal duct, or osteomas. The material most frequently used for this obliteration is autogenous adipose tissue. Autografts such as muscle, cartilage, and bone chips have been also recommended for this purpose. In order to avoid the surgical procedure required for harvesting an autograft from other body sites, alloplastic materials have been suggested for frontal sinus obliteration. ME

Exchange Cranioplasty Using Bioabsorbable Hydroxyapatite and Collagen Complex After Removal of an Extensive Frontal Bone Tumor in an Infant.

BACKGROUND: Forehead reconstruction is challenging. Reconstruction of the innate curvature of the forehead is difficult, and the forehead is an esthetically important part of the face. Although synthetic implants and autologous split bone grafts are useful, these cannot be used in infants. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 4-month-old girl was presented with a right frontal bone Ewing sarcoma. The tumor was removed, and the defect was reconstructed with an autologous contralateral parietal bone graft. The parietal bone defect was repaired with a bioabsorbable hydroxyapatite and collagen complex. Good recon

Internal Distraction Osteogenesis With Piezosurgery Oblique Osteotomy of Supraorbital Margin of Frontal Bone for the Treatment of Unilateral Coronal Synostosis.

PURPOSE: To assess the utility of internal distraction osteogenesis with Piezosurgery oblique osteotomy of supraorbital margin of frontal bone for the treatment of unilateral coronal synostosis and to study the outcome and complications of this procedure. Oblique osteotomy allows for entry into the cranial cavity, and along with parallel cut to the roof of the orbit, avoids the need to cut into the orbit which forms the frontal flap. METHODS: Oblique osteotomy was performed along the supraorbital rim to do a frontal suture of the glabella (ages of patients were less than 1 year) or on the opp

What bone part is important to remove in accessing the suprachiasmatic region with less frontal lobe retraction in frontotemporal craniotomies.

BACKGROUND: The anterolateral approach is one of the main routes for accessing suprachiasmatic lesions involving the anterior communicating artery (AComA) complex. Pterional (PT) craniotomy and its alternatives, including orbitozygomatic, orbitopterional, and mini-supraorbital craniotomies, have been developed as tailored frontotemporal craniotomies. One of the main differences between PT craniotomy and its alternatives is the removal of the orbital bone along with the sphenoid wing. However, which bone part is the most important to remove has not been discussed in relation to frontal lobe ret

Comparison of fast-setting calcium phosphate bone cement and fat autograft in a rabbit model of frontal sinus obliteration.

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, chronic obstruction of the frontal recess is managed by frontal sinus obliteration (FSO). This often requires the harvest of abdominal fat as a filler with all of its associated morbidity. In this study, we investigate the efficacy of calcium phosphate bone cement (Craniofacial Repair System [CRS]) as a material for FSO. METHODS: Eighteen New Zealand white rabbits were divided into three groups and carried out to two time periods. Six rabbits underwent FSO with fat autograft (control group) and 12 rabbits underwent FSO with CRS (study groups 1 and 2, respectively).
