Lateral occipitotemporal cortex, extrastriate body area, and the somatic prior: disentangling feature and function.

Is the extrastriate body area is best characterized as a narrowly defined, feature-selective region or as a node whose significance depends on its network? We argue that this opposition is misleading: feature-level claims (what a region responds to) and function-level claims (what its output is used for) answer different questions and cannot substitute for one another. Recent evidence indicates that the extrastriate body area's degree of feature tuning, including the species-specific tuning relevant to conspecific detection, itself depends on the network it is coupled to, and lateral occipitot

Novel gain-of-function CLCN2 germline mutation associated with nonclassical lateralizing primary aldosteronism.

Primary aldosteronism (PA) is commonly caused by somatic and germline mutations in various genes. Patients with unilateral PA may display classical or nonclassical histopathologic features in adrenal tumors. Somatic and germline mutations are linked to classical unilateral and familial PA, respectively. In this study, we aim to search for novel gene mutations causing nonclassical lateralizing PA. Surgically resected adrenal tumor tissues from patients enrolled in a PA cohort were subjected to histopathological evaluation. Genetic analyses were performed for genomic DNA isolated from peripheral

The Impact of Later-Life Learning on Trajectories of Cognitive Function Among U.S. Older Adults.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Low education in early life is a major risk factor for dementia. However, little is known about how education in later life is related to cognitive function in older adults. We assessed whether later-life learning was associated with better cognitive function over time and whether the associations differed by sex, race/ethnicity, and prior education. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We used data from the 2008-2018 Health and Retirement Study, including participants aged 65+ without baseline dementia and followed for up to 6 years. Global cognition was measured using a s

Asymmetric lateral habenula function and peripheral neural mechanisms in regulating itch-evoked scratching.

Itch is an aversive sensory experience inextricably linked to a desire to scratch.1,2 While recent progress has advanced our understanding of itch sensation and transmission, the neural mechanisms underlying how scratching is sensed and controlled remain largely elusive. Here, we show that the left lateral habenula (LHb), which responds to negatively valent somatosensory stimuli,3,4,5,6,7,8 preferentially engages and negatively regulates chloroquine (CQ)-evoked itch and scratching. Calcium activity in left LHb neurons increases when scratching is terminated, and their activation is sufficient

Functional and return-to-sport outcomes after arthroscopic anatomic reconstruction of the lateral ligaments of the ankle.

BACKGROUND: Chronic lateral ankle instability (CLAI) affects 20-40 % of patients following a lateral ankle sprain and is frequently managed with surgical reconstruction when conservative treatments fail. Although arthroscopic anatomic reconstruction techniques have been increasingly adopted, few studies specifically examine their functional outcomes and rates of return to sport (RTS). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate functional outcomes and RTS rates after arthroscopic anatomic reconstruction of the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and calcaneofibular ligament (CFL) using gracilis

Functional Rehabilitation With Anatomic Reconstruction of Oroantral Fistula With Lateral Approach of Sinus Elevation Surgery.

Oroantral fistula (OAF), defined as an epithelized pathologic communication between the oral cavity and the maxillary sinus, develops when an oroantral communication (OAC) has remained unclosed for 48 to 72 hours or longer. To close an OAF, infections within the maxillary sinus, such as sinusitis, must be treated through sinus irrigation, medication, or sinus surgery. In addition, physical closure using a local flap is required, so various techniques have been proposed for this purpose. This study introduces an innovative approach for closing OAF utilizing xenogenic bone grafts and the buccal

Lateralized Functional Connectivity of the Sensorimotor Cortex and its Variations During Complex Visuomotor Tasks.

Previous studies have shown that the left hemisphere dominates motor function, often observed through homotopic activation measurements. Using a functional connectivity approach, this study investigated the lateralization of the sensorimotor cortex during handwriting and drawing, two complex visuomotor tasks with varying contextual demands. We found that both left- and right-lateralized connectivity in the primary motor cortex (M1), dorsal premotor cortex (PMd), somatosensory cortex, and visual regions were evident in adults (males and females), primarily in an interhemispheric integrative fas

Functional anomaly mapping lateralizes temporal lobe epilepsy with high accuracy in individual patients.

Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE) is associated with variable dysfunction beyond the temporal lobe. We used functional anomaly mapping (FAM), a multivariate machine learning approach to resting state fMRI analysis to measure subcortical and cortical functional aberrations in patients with mTLE. We also examined the value of individual FAM in lateralizing the hemisphere of seizure onset in mTLE patients. Methods: Patients and controls were selected from an existing imaging and clinical database. After standard preprocessing of resting state fMRI, time-series were extracted from 400 cortical

Lateral abdominal muscle thickness and contractile function in women with and without stress urinary incontinence.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) primarily results from the weakness of pelvic floor muscles, working synergistically with the abdominal muscles. The current study aimed to compare thickness and contractile function of lateral abdominal muscles in women with and without SUI. METHODS: Thirty-nine women with SUI (SUI group; age: 38.87 ± 8.96 years, body mass index (BMI): 24.03 (5.94) kg/m2) and 42 healthy women (control group; age: 36.21 ± 11.46 years, BMI: 23.90 (5.85) kg/m2) were included. Sublethal effects of methylmercury on lateral line sensory and ion-regulatory functions in zebrafish embryos.

Methylmercury can interfere with the normal functioning of the nervous system, causing a variety of behavioral and physiological changes in fish. However, the influence of MeHg on the lateral line sensory and ion-regulatory functions of fish is not clear. Zebrafish embryos were utilized as a model to address this question. After exposure to water-borne MeHg (5, 10, 50, or 100 ppb) for 96 h (4-100 h post-fertilization), the survival rate declined by ca. 50 % at 100 ppb. However, MeHg at sublethal concentrations delayed hatching and decreased heart rates and body length. As to effects on the lat

Newborns with myelomeningocele: their health-related quality of life and daily functioning 10 years later.

OBJECTIVE: Ten years ago, the authors reported on the outcome of their study investigating the degree of discomfort and pain in newborns with myelomeningocele (MMC), using the parameters of unbearable and hopeless suffering. In the current study, they investigated the quality of life, daily functioning, pain and fatigue, ability to communicate, and number of surgeries in the same cohort of patients. They subdivided their study population into severe (Lorber) and less severe (non-Lorber) cases and compared these cases with a healthy population (non-MMC group) and with each other. METHODS: The

Good medium-term functional results in reconstruction of lateral femoral condyle osteochondral lesions.

INTRODUCTION: Results of autologous osteochondral graft (mosaicplasty) are well-reported for the medial femoral condyle but much less for the lateral femoral condyle. The main aim of the present study was to assess results specifically for lateral condyle reconstruction. The secondary objective was to compare results according to the two main etiologies: osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) and osteochondral fracture (OCF). HYPOTHESIS: The study hypothesis was that medium-term functional and radiological results of lateral femoral condyle autologous osteochondral graft are good. MATERIAL AND METH

Functional magnetic resonance imaging of human motor unit fasciculation in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

A novel diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging protocol sensitive to contraction of individual skeletal motor units was developed. We applied this technique to the lower limb muscles of 4 patients with confirmed amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and 6 healthy controls. A 3-minute scan revealed florid fasciculation in ALS patients, involving both superficial and deep muscles, and at a frequency higher than in healthy controls. This novel imaging technique reveals hitherto unobtainable information on human motor unit structure and function, which may allow earlier diagnosis and recruitm

Bojungikgi-tang Improves Muscle and Spinal Cord Function in an Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Model.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a motor neuron disease characterized by progressive motor function impairment, dysphagia, and respiratory failure. Owing to the complexity of its pathogenic mechanisms, an effective therapy for ALS is lacking. Herbal medicines with multiple targets have good efficacy and low adverse reactions for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, the effects of Bojungikgi-tang (BJIGT), an herbal medicine with eight component herbs, on muscle and spinal cord function were evaluated in an ALS animal model. Animals were randomly divided into three g

Resting State Functional Connectivity of the Lateral and Medial Hypothalamus in Cocaine Dependence: An Exploratory Study.

The role of dopamine in cocaine misuse has been extensively documented for the mesocorticolimbic circuit. Preclinical work from earlier lesion studies to recent multidisciplinary investigations has suggested that the hypothalamus is critically involved in motivated behavior, with the lateral and medial hypothalamus each involved in waking/feeding and resting/satiety. However, little is known of hypothalamus function and dysfunction in cocaine misuse. Here, we examined resting state functional connectivity of the lateral and medial hypothalamus in 70 individuals with cocaine dependence (CD) and
