Gait in children with infantile/atypical autism: Age-dependent decrease in gait variability and associations with motor skills.

Gait and its associations with prewalking motor milestones, motor skills, and age were investigated in 32 children with infantile/atypical autism and 36 typically developing controls. Gait was assessed using GAITRite recordings of spatiotemporal and variability gait parameters. Parents reported their child's prewalking motor milestones. Motor skills were assessed using the Movement Assessment Battery for Children. Children with infantile/atypical autism showed higher gait variability than controls, indicating a less regular walking pattern. In children with infantile/atypical autism gait varia

Dual task interference on postural sway, postural transitions and gait in people with Parkinson's disease and freezing of gait.

Freezing of gait (FoG) is associated with less automatic gait and more impaired cognition, balance and postural transitions compared to people with PD who do not have FoG. However, it is unknown whether dual-task cost during postural sway, postural transitions (such as gait initiation and turning), and gait are more in subjects with Parkinson's disease (PD) who have freezing of gait (FoG+) compared to those who do not have FoG (FoG-). Here, we hypothesized that the effects of a cognitive dual task on postural sway, postural transitions and gait would be larger in FoG+ than FoG-. Thirty FoG- an

Prefrontal cortex as a compensatory network in ataxic gait: a correlation study between cortical activity and gait parameters.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether prefrontal cortex (PFC) functioning during ataxic gait is linked to compensatory mechanisms or to the typical intra-subject variability of the ataxic gait. METHODS: Nineteen patients with chronic ataxia and fifteen healthy subjects were evaluated. The subjects were requested to walk along a straight distance of 10 meters while PFC oxygenation and gait parameters were assessed. PFC activity was evaluated by NIRO-200 while gait analysis was performed by the SMART-D500. To investigate the intra-subject variability of gait, we calculated the coefficient of multiple

Assessment of Gait Kinematics in the Sagittal Plane in Children with Cerebral Palsy Following Therapy with the PRODROBOT Gait Trainer.

BACKGROUND: Gait disturbances are among the most disabling manifestations of cerebral palsy (CP) and substantially affect functional mobility and quality of life. Robot-assisted gait training (RAGT) has been introduced to improve gait performance; however, its effects on lower-limb kinematics remain inconsistent. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in sagittal-plane gait kinematics in children with CP following a four-week gait rehabilitation program using the PRODROBOT robotic gait trainer. METHODS: A prospective quasi-experimental pre-post study with a reference group was conducte

Validity and reliability of monocular 3D markerless gait analysis in simulated pathological gait: A comparative study with OpenCap.

Recent advances in markerless 3D motion capture raise hopes of making gait analysis more accessible and affordable. While tools like OpenCap.ai require at least two smartphones, emerging monocular approaches allow full-body 3D pose estimation from a single camera. This study evaluated the concurrent validity and test-retest reliability of a low-cost monocular markerless system (CameraHMR) based on 3D skinned multi-person linear models (SMPL) in comparison to a marker-based reference system and a two-camera OpenCap setup. We used videos and marker-based motion capture data from two previous stu

Digital gait measures, but not the 400-meter walk time, detect abnormal gait characteristics in people with Prediabetes.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Abnormal gait characteristics have been observed in people with diabetic neuropathy, but it is unclear if subtle changes in gait occur in prediabetic people with impaired fasting glucose (IFG). The aims of this study were: (1) to investigate if digital gait measures discriminate people with prediabetes from healthy control participants (HC) and (2) to investigate the relationship between gait measures and clinical scores (concurrent validity). METHODS: 108 people with prediabetes (71.20 ± 5.11 years) and 63 HC subjects (70.40 ± 6.25 years) wore 6 inertial sensors (Opals by

Effect of disease, freezing of gait, and dopaminergic medication in the biomechanics of trunk and upper limbs in the gait of Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD) causes gait abnormalities that may be associated with an arm swing reduction. Medication and freezing of gait (FoG) may influence gait characteristics. However, these comparisons do not consider differences in gait speed and clinical characteristics in individuals with PD. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to analyze the effect of FoG and medication on the biomechanics of the trunk and upper limbs during gait in PD, controlling for gait speed and clinical differences between groups. METHODS: Twenty-two people with a clinical diagnosis of idiopathic PD in ON an

Effect of assist-as-needed robotic gait training on the gait pattern post stroke: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Regaining gait capacity is an important rehabilitation goal post stroke. Compared to clinically available robotic gait trainers, robots with an assist-as-needed approach and multiple degrees of freedom (AANmDOF) are expected to support motor learning, and might improve the post-stroke gait pattern. However, their benefits compared to conventional gait training have not yet been shown in a randomized controlled trial (RCT). The aim of this two-center, assessor-blinded, RCT was to compare the effect of AANmDOF robotic to conventional training on the gait pattern and functional gait t

Crouched gait in myelomeningocele: a comparison between the degree of knee flexion contracture in the clinical examination and during gait.

The purpose of this study was to quantitatively evaluate, in patients with low lumbar and sacral level myelomeningocele who have knee flexion contractures, whether there are significant differences between the degree of knee flexion contracture measured clinically and the degree of actual knee flexion during gait, measured by computerized gait analysis. Patients were divided into two groups, those who walked with ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) alone and those who walked with AFOs and crutches. In both groups, the patient's knee flexion contractures were measured clinically, and the degree of knee

Real-Time Kinematic Adaptive Deep Brain Stimulation Safely Reduces Gait Impairment and Freezing of Gait in Parkinson's Disease.

Gait impairment (GI) and freezing of gait (FOG) affect 80% of patients with advanced Parkinson's disease. Continuous deep brain stimulation (cDBS) provides limited adaptability to address the episodic nature of FOG due to fixed parameters. Neural biomarkers for adaptive DBS are limited by signal artifacts and poor FOG classification. Wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs) offer a promising alternative by directly measuring signatures of GI&FOG. We developed Kinematic adaptive DBS (KaDBS), the first intelligent system to dynamically modulate stimulation in response to real-time gait metrics

Gait-Specific Pulmonary Oxygen Uptake Kinetics During Gait Transitions Reflect the Energetics of Walking and Running in Humans.

PURPOSE: Human terrestrial locomotion involves a transition between walking and running. While the energetics of steady-state walking and running have been well characterized, cardiac, ventilatory, and gas-exchange kinetics during gait transitions remain poorly understood. METHODS: In this study, we used a sinusoidally changing speed of locomotion to investigate cardiac, ventilatory, and gas-exchange kinetics ( beat-by-beat heart rate, breath-by-breath pulmonary ventilation [ ], CO 2 output [ ], and O 2 uptake [ ]) as well as step frequency adjustment across three gait conditions: walking (Wa

Gait speed recovery after iliofemoral ligament-preserving hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement: associations with early postoperative gait kinematics.

INTRODUCTION: Whether iliofemoral ligament-preserving hip arthroscopy facilitates recovery of gait speed-an indicator of functional recovery following hip arthroscopy in patients with femoroacetabular impingement-remains unclear. We investigated whether gait speed improved after iliofemoral ligament-preserving hip arthroscopy and examined whether pelvic jerk, defined as the time derivative of acceleration and assessed using inertial sensors at 1 month postoperatively (1M), was associated with gait speed at 6 months (6M). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighteen patients who underwent primary hip arthr
