Gallbladder Hydatid Disease Complicated with Multiple Hepatobiliopancreatic Fistulae: A Case Report.

Gallbladder is a rare localization for hydatid disease. Complications are even rarer and precise diagnosis is quite difficult even with radiological assistance. We report a rare case of 41-yr-old male patient presenting with the rupture of a gallbladder hydatid cyst with multiple fistulae to intra and extrahepatic bile ducts and pancreas, at Kocaeli State Hospital, Turkey in 2021. The patient had abdominal pain and abdominal CT scan reported a bizarre "contrast enhanced cholangiography" sign - radiopaque contrast substance in gallbladder, intra and extrahepatic bile ducts and pancreatic ducts,

An Overview of Ascariasis Involvement in Gallbladder Disease: A Systematic Review of Case Reports.

Ascaris lumbricoides is the most common type of helminth infection in humans. It affects more than one billion of the world's population. Children living in developing nations are prone to ascariasis, presenting with obstructive biliary illnesses. Migration of Ascaris worms through the major duodenal papilla to the hepatobiliary system leads to symptoms of biliary colic and complications along the biliary tree. In April 2022, we performed a systematic review of case reports to identify and examine cases of gallbladder ascariasis worldwide. A methodical search using PubMed, Semantic Scholar, Sc

Incidental Carcinoma after Cholecystectomy for Benign Disease of the Gallbladder: A Meta-Analysis.

This study aimed to determine the incidence and the prognosis of incidental carcinoma of the gallbladder (IGBC) after cholecystectomy through a meta-analysis. This meta-analysis included 51 studies and 436,636 patients with cholecystectomy. The incidence rate of IGBC after cholecystectomy was 0.6% (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.5%-0.8%). The incidence rate of recent studies was not significantly different from those of past studies. The mean age and female ratio of the IGBC subgroup were not significantly different from those of the overall patient group. The estimated rates of IGBC were 13.0

Re-resection in Incidental Gallbladder Cancer: Survival and the Incidence of Residual Disease.

BACKGROUND: Re-resection for incidental gallbladder cancer (iGBC) is associated with improved survival but little is known about residual disease (RD) and prognostic factors. In this study, survival after re-resection, RD, and prognostic factors are analyzed. METHODS: Patients with iGBC were identified from the Netherlands Cancer Registry, and pathology reports of re-resected patients were reviewed. Survival and prognostic factors were analyzed. RESULTS: Overall, 463 patients were included; 24% (n = 110) underwent re-resection after a median interval of 66 days. RD was present in 35% of pati

Multimodality Imaging, including Dual-Energy CT, in the Evaluation of Gallbladder Disease.

Imaging of the gallbladder has a key role in the examination of patients with abdominal pain-especially pain localized to the right upper quadrant. Pathologic conditions that affect the gallbladder include cholelithiasis and associated complications such as acute and chronic cholecystitis, choledocholithiasis, gallstone pancreatitis, and cancer. Modalities used to image the gallbladder include ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, and nuclear scintigraphy. US is the primary imaging modality used to evaluate entities suspected of being gallbladder dise

An Unusual Presentation of Kawasaki Disease: Gallbladder Hydrops and Acute Cholestatic Hepatitis.

Kawasaki disease is the most common vasculitis of childhood. In its classical form, at least four of five diagnostic criteria including cervical lymphadenopathy (1.5 cm or more), nonsuppurative conjunctivitis, intraoral mucosal changes, edema in hands and feet, and maculopapular rash are required with prolonged fever over 5 days. Atypical cases which are different from the classical type or incomplete cases which does not include all the diagnostic criteria can be seen. The typical Kawasaki disease is a self-limiting disease with fever lasting for an average of two weeks. In such patients who

Surgery for acute gallbladder disease in Sweden 1989-2006--a register study.

OBJECTIVE: Since early 1970s, prospective randomized controlled trials have emphasized the advantages of early cholecystectomy in patients with acute cholecystitis, compared to elective delayed cholecystectomy. The aim of this investigation was to study surgery for acute gallbladder disease in Sweden during a 15-year period when open cholecystectomy was replaced by a laparoscopic procedure. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data from the Swedish National Patient Register and the Cause of Death Register 1988-2006 comprising hospital stays with a primary diagnosis of gallbladder/gallstone disease in Sweden

Sonographic gallbladder abnormality is associated with intravenous immunoglobulin resistance in Kawasaki disease.

OBJECTIVE: Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute systematic vasculitis in children which causes coronary arterial lesions and hydrops of gallbladder. Our objective is to correlate the clinical significance and influence on disease outcome of patients with gallbladder abnormalities in Kawasaki dissease. METHODS: Children who met KD diagnosis criteria and were admitted for IVIG treatment were retrospectively enrolled for analysis. Patients with abdominal sonography were divided into 2 groups based on the absence (Group A, N = 61) or presence (Group B, N = 16) of gallbladder abnormalities (GBA), def

Treatment of gallbladder disease during operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.

BACKGROUND: We examined the outcome after treatment for gallbladder disease in deployed military service members and the impact of instituting a clinical pathway to expedite return to duty (RTD). METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 97 medically evacuated patients with gallbladder disease was carried out. These patients were evacuated from the field to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LRMC), Germany, between March 2003 and November 2004. In October 2003, a clinical pathway was established to facilitate returning these deployed patients back to their combat units. These service members w

Gallbladder disease in young Congolese with sickle cell anemia: an ultrasound survey.

Patients with sickle cell anemia have been shown to present with a high prevalence of gallbladder disease. Relatively few data exist on the prevalence of gallbladder disease in Africans with autosomal recessive gene for sickle hemoglobin. To establish this relationship, we examined the 1-year incidence of gallbladder disease among 190 consecutive children and young adults with sickle cell anemia aged 3-24 years using ultrasound. There were 130 males (68.4 per cent) and 60 females (31.6 per cent). Incidence of cholelithiasis, cholecystitis, hydrops of gallbladder, and biliary sludge were 58.4,

Contrast-enhanced power Doppler US: is it useful in the differentiation of gallbladder disease?

Thirteen patients with gallbladder disease underwent power Doppler ultrasound (PDUS) before and after microbubble contrast agent injection. Lesion and liver bed vascularity was evaluated. Pathological diagnoses in nine patients were two acute cholecystitis, four chronic inflammation, one adenoma and two adenocarcinoma. Two cases of cancer were included on clinical and radiological findings. Two cases were excluded because no pathologic diagnosis was available. Liver bed hyperemia was noted only in acute cholecystitis. Contrast-enhanced PDUS was superior to nonenhanced PDUS in the demonstration

Relationship of serum leptin concentration and other measures of adiposity with gallbladder disease.

Obesity increases the risk of gallstones, especially in women. Most gallbladder disease studies have used body mass index (BMI) as a measure of overall adiposity, although BMI does not distinguish between fat and lean body mass. Central adiposity may also increase gallstone risk, although this is less well studied. Leptin is a peptide whose serum concentration is highly correlated with total body fat mass. We examined the relationship of gallbladder disease with anthropometric measures and serum leptin concentration in a large, national, population-based study. A total of 13,962 adult particip

Enterogastric reflux mimicking gallbladder disease: detection, quantitation and potential significance.

OBJECTIVE: Visualization of enterogastric reflux (EGR) may be present during hepatobiliary imaging. Reflux of bile may damage the gastric mucosa, altering its function, and cause such symptoms as epigastric pain, heartburn, nausea, intermittent vomiting and abdominal fullness. These symptoms also are associated with gallbladder disease. The aim of this study was to quantitate the EGR index (EGRI) and to determine if a difference exists in normal and abnormal responses using standard cholecystokinin (CCK)-augmented hepatobiliary imaging. METHODS: This study used 129 patients. LAO dynamic data

Effectiveness of cholecystokinin-stimulated cholescintigraphy in the diagnosis and treatment of acalculous gallbladder disease.

We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 107 patients in two community hospitals who had undergone cholecystokinin-stimulated cholescintigraphy with ejection fraction to determine whether this test is reliable in identifying patients whose symptoms will improve following cholecystectomy. Patients with cholelithiasis or incomplete medical records and patients who could not be interviewed were excluded from the study. Forty-two of 58 study patients (72%) had an abnormal ejection fraction (defined as 35% or less); 27 of 42 patients (64%) underwent cholecystectomy. Twenty-six of 27 (96%)

Impaired fatty-meal-stimulated gallbladder contractility in patients with Crohn's disease.

1. The incidence of gallstones in patients with Crohn's disease is increased compared with that in healthy control subjects. This is in part due to reduced terminal ileal bile salt absorption and consequent increased cholesterol saturation in bile. The aim of this study was to evaluate gallbladder contractility, a second important factor in the pathogenesis of gallstones, in Crohn's disease. 2. Thirty patients with Crohn's disease and no known biliary tract disease and nine healthy control subjects were studied. After an overnight fast, gallbladder volume was determined by real-time ultrasonog

Chronic acalculous gallbladder disease: multiimaging evaluation with clinical-pathologic correlation.

Despite the recent advances in hepatobiliary imaging, the diagnosis of chronic acalculous gallbladder disease remains difficult. A retrospective study was undertaken to assess the value of a multiimaging approach in detecting chronic acalculous gallbladder disease and in predicting which patients would obtain symptomatic relief after cholecystectomy. Of 199 patients with chronic cholecystitis, 26 (13%) had no gallstones. Of these 26, only 17 (65%) had symptoms related to chronic cholecystitis; in the remainder, the histologic diagnosis was made incidentally. After cholecystectomy, 13 (76%) of

Prevalence of clinical gallbladder disease in Mexican-American, Anglo, and black women.

Clinical observations have suggested that gallstones are increased in frequency in Mexican-Americans compared to other ethnic groups. Past autopsy surveys have demonstrated a low prevalence in blacks compared to whites. We retrospectively reviewed 1,018 charts to study the prevalence of cholelithiasis in ambulatory women of these three racial/ethnic backgrounds. Mexican-American women were found to have a prevalence of gallbladder disease approximately three times that of black women, with Anglo prevalences falling in an intermediate range. The prevalence of cholelithiasis was also positively

UGT1A1 polymorphisms and gallbladder-related outcomes in sickle cell disease in Brazil.

Gallbladder complications represent a significant source of morbidity in sickle cell disease, with UGT1A1 promoter polymorphisms associated with a higher frequency of hyperbilirubinemia and cholelithiasis in affected patients and the first publications regarding this issue appeared in the literature in early 2000. There are at least three published papers providing evidence that supports this association in the Brazilian population published in 2003, 2017 and 2021. Belisário et al., very recently published a paper in Annals of Hematology ("Laboratory and genetic characteristics associated with
