Sudden onset of temporomandibular joint swelling and limited mouth opening: a rare case of ganglion cyst.

Preauricular swelling followed by limited mouth opening can be a challenging diagnosis. All anatomical structures and related pathologies should be examined. A 41-year-old woman presented to the Emergency Room complaining of limited mouth opening, severe pain that was worse on chewing, and swelling over her right temporomandibular joint (TMJ) that had started 3 days previously. Physical examination revealed localized swelling and redness over her right TMJ. Her right masticatory muscles were very painful and tender on palpation. Mouth opening was slightly limited. A computed tomography (CT) sc

The cubital tunnel syndrome caused by intraneural ganglion cyst of the ulnar nerve at the elbow: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Cubital tunnel syndrome is common nerve compression syndrome among peripheral nerve compression diseases. However, the syndrome caused by intraneural ganglion cysts has been rarely reported. Medical approaches, like ultrasound-guided aspiration and open surgical treatment remain to be discussed. CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old woman presented with occasional pain, numbness and paralysis in her left hand and a palpable, painless mass in the ulnar side of her left elbow. Ultrasound-guided aspiration of the mass was performed to decompress the ulnar nerve. The patient experienced an

Isolated medial plantar neuropathy caused by a large ganglion cyst diagnosed with MRI: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Although ganglion cysts are common soft tissue tumors, nerve compression syndrome caused by a ganglion cyst in the lower extremities is very rare. Herein, we report a 57-year-old man who presented with hypoesthesia in the sole of his right foot for 6 months. We believe that reporting this rare case will help clinicians update their knowledge on possible causes of the plantar neuropathy, and avoid diagnostic delay. PRESENTATION OF CASE: The patient had pain and numbness in the inner right sole, as well as a tingling and dull sensation. Tenderness around the area of abnormal sensa

Role of sonography in the diagnosis and treatment of a ganglion cyst compressing the lateral branch of deep peroneal nerve.

Selective compression neuropathy of the lateral branch of the deep peroneal nerve is rare. A 55-year-old woman with ankle instability and mild weakness of extension of the toes was examined with sonography (US), which revealed the presence of a ganglion cyst compressing selectively the lateral branch of the deep peroneal nerve. US-guided aspiration of the cyst resulted in nerve decompression and progressive resolution of symptoms. This case demonstrates the importance of examining the deep peroneal nerve and its branches when performing US in the clinical setting of ankle instability. © 2016 W

Intraneural Ganglion Cyst of the Ulnar Nerve at the Elbow Masquerading as a Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor.

BACKGROUND: Ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE) is the second most common mononeuropathy of the upper extremity. One rare cause of UNE is nerve mass lesions, including intraneural ganglion cysts (IGCs). IGC imaging studies provide important information that may determine the nature of a peripheral nerve mass lesion. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present the case of a 73-year-old woman who presented with rapid deterioration of left hand function over 2 months with weakness of fine motor control, grip strength, and dysesthesia in the ulnar nerve distribution. Preoperative imaging studies, including magn

Ganglion cyst of the temporomandibular joint with intracranial extension in a patient presenting with seventh cranial nerve palsy.

Ganglion cysts arising from the temporomandibular joint are rare entities that often present with swelling and minimal to no pain in the preauricular region. To the authors' knowledge, a temporomandibular joint ganglion cyst occurring with acute facial nerve palsy and intracranial extension has never been reported. The patient in the current case initially underwent treatment for Bell palsy and then draining of the cyst at an outside hospital with no relief of symptoms. Repeat MR imaging showed an increase in the size of the cystic, enhancing, middle fossa lesion measuring 4 cm. Resection of t

Suprascapular nerve neuropathy secondary to spinoglenoid notch ganglion cyst: case reports and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Suprascapular nerve neuropathy secondary to ganglion cyst impingement has increasingly been found to be a cause of shoulder pain. CLINICAL PICTURE: We present 2 patients who complained of dull, poorly localised shoulder pain, which worsened with overhead activities. Magnetic resonance imaging showed ganglion cysts in the spinoglenoid notch. TREATMENT: Both patients failed conservative management with physiotherapy and underwent shoulder arthroscopy. One patient underwent arthroscopic decompression of the cyst and the other had open excision of the cyst. OUTCOME: Both patients

Conservative treatment for a symptomatic solitary ganglion cyst of the anterior meniscus invading into the infrapatellar fat pad.

Symptomatic meniscal cysts without accompanying meniscal tears are uncommon, especially those which are formed from the anterior meniscus and invading into the infrapatellar fat pad (IPFP). The current recommended treatment for such cysts is excision through open method or arthroscopy. To our knowledge, this is the first case study about a symptomatic solitary meniscal cyst invading the IPFP that was successfully treated with needle aspiration and steroid injection after arthroscopic treatment of the associated disorders. In this paper, similar cases are also reviewed to discuss the treatment

Ganglion of the distal interphalangeal joint (myxoid cyst): therapy by identification and repair of the leak of joint fluid.

BACKGROUND: Digital myxoid cysts are a relatively common pathology in the skin, representing a ganglion of the adjacent distal interphalangeal joint. Success of treatment is largely proportional to the destructiveness of the therapy and postoperative morbidity. We studied an effective, minimally traumatic surgical treatment in which tissue is not removed and morbidity is low. DESIGN: Open, nonrandomized trial of therapy. Methylene blue dye was injected into the distal interphalangeal joint. A skin flap was designed around the cyst and raised to identify the dye-filled communication between jo

Glucose Transporter 1 (GLUT1) Positivity in Ganglion Cysts: A Diagnostic Caveat Due to Overlap With Perineuriomas and Other Fibromyxoid Lesions.

Glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1) is a sensitive immunohistochemical marker for perineural cells and certain mesenchymal neoplasms, including chordoma, desmoplastic small round cell tumor, desmoid-type fibromatosis, epithelioid sarcoma, gastrointestinal stromal tumor, myoepithelioma, schwannoma, and undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma. In this study, we focus on the morphological and immunohistochemical challenges in differentiating between ganglion cysts and perineuriomas. To our knowledge, no previous studies have explored the potential morphological and immunohistochemical similarities between

Formation of multiple ganglion cysts along the flexor tendon after open A1 pulley release for trigger finger: A case report.

RATIONALE: When surgical treatment is indicated for primary trigger finger, open A1 pulley release has traditionally been recommended with generally good results. However, ganglion cysts of the flexor tendon sheath as a complication after an open A1 pulley release were rarely reported. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to report a case of multiple ganglion cysts arising from the flexor tendon sheath in a patient undergoing an open A1 pulley release for trigger finger disorder with a review of the relevant literature. PATIENT CONCERNS AND DIAGNOSIS: A 65-year-old right-handed farmer was

Hoffa's Fat Pad Ganglion Cyst Causing Infrapatellar Impingement in a Collegiate Athlete: A Report of a Rare Case.

Ganglion cysts are benign, fluid-filled lesions most frequently arising from the wrist and hand, while occurrence within Hoffa's (infrapatellar) fat pad of the knee is rare. When present in the knee, these cysts may lead to localized irritation, mechanical infrapatellar impingement, restricted range of motion, and anterior knee pain. We present the case of a 19-year-old collegiate basketball player with chronic anterior right knee pain without any prior history of trauma, unresponsive to initial conservative management. Initial clinical evaluation suggested patellofemoral pain syndrome; howeve

Hoffa's fat pad ganglion cyst of the knee: a case report of a rare cause of knee pain and swelling.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Hoffa's fat pad (HFP), also known as infrapatellar fat pad, is one of the three fat pads in the knee. Ganglion cyst (GC) rarely arises from HFP which presents knee pain and swelling. CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old female presented with left knee pain for 1 year and swelling in her left knee for 6 months. Clinical examination revealed a palpable swelling of size around 3 cm×2 cm over the anteromedial aspect of the left knee. The size of the swelling increased on extension and decreased on flexion of the knee. A musculoskeletal ultrasound of the left knee revealed

Physiotherapy Rehabilitation of Scapholunate Ligament Instability Following Ganglion Cyst in a Recreational Basketball Player: A Case Report.

Ganglion cysts are prevalent benign soft tissue tumors, commonly occurring on the dorsal wrist and often associated with underlying joint structures like the scapholunate ligament (SLL), a critical stabilizer of the wrist. SLL instability, frequently resulting from acute trauma or repetitive stress, can significantly impair wrist function, causing pain, reduced range of motion, and decreased grip strength. This case report details the conservative management of a 25-year-old recreational basketball player who presented with SLL instability and a dorsal ganglion cyst following two separate wris

Cubital tunnel syndrome of the ulnar nerve caused by an epineural ganglion cyst: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: The ulnar nerve has a long and complex anatomical course, originating from the brachial neural plexus in the neck with nerve trunk formation at the posterior neck triangle, and on to the axilla. This intricate anatomical pathway renders the nerve susceptible to compression, direct injury, and traction throughout its course. Compression of the ulnar nerve is the second most common compression neuropathy of the median nerve adjacent to the wrist joint, after carpal tunnel syndrome. CASE PRESENTATION: A 45-year-old Sudanese housewife complained of progressive right forearm and hand m
