Microbial communities of the house fly Musca domestica vary with geographical location and habitat.

House flies (Musca domestica) are widespread, synanthropic filth flies commonly found on decaying matter, garbage, and feces as well as human food. They have been shown to vector microbes, including clinically relevant pathogens. Previous studies have demonstrated that house flies carry a complex and variable prokaryotic microbiota, but the main drivers underlying this variability and the influence of habitat on the microbiota remain understudied. Moreover, the differences between the external and internal microbiota and the eukaryotic components have not been examined. To obtain a comprehensi

Assessing Upstream Structural and Social Drivers of Health in Breast Cancer Survivorship: The Pathways Study Neighborhood Resource.

BACKGROUND: Research has linked neighborhood factors (e.g., air pollution, obesogenic environment) often associated with residential segregation to cancer disparities, including mortality. Limited research has explored these multilevel drivers of health, recognizing residential segregation as upstream of neighborhood social, built, and physical environment attributes. In this study, we describe the neighborhood data resource of the Pathways Study, a diverse cohort of women diagnosed with breast cancer. METHODS: Using data from multiple sources, including the 2010 US Census, we appended census

"Not all bathrooms are created Equal": Moral experiences of maneuvering in inaccessible infrastructure with physical disability.

How do people with physical disabilities characterize their encounters with inaccessible infrastructure? I draw on interviews and focus groups with older adults with spinal cord injuries from the Midwestern United States to argue that participants experienced inaccessible space as morally harmful, damaging their sense of worth and dignity. They developed strategic bodily "maneuvers" to squeeze through narrow corridors, scale ledges, navigate the back of rooms and buildings, and avoid filth and garbage-resulting in situations of exclusion and marginalized inclusion. Maneuvering established inac

Neighborhood Disinvestment Predicts Shorter Cancer Survival Time among Black Women Diagnosed with Invasive Breast Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Observed neighborhood disinvestment is a chronic social determinant that is understudied in relation to cancer outcomes. This study investigated associations between neighborhood disinvestment, stage at diagnosis, and breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS) time. METHODS: Individual-level data included 844 women, diagnosed 2013 to 2019, from the Women's Circle of Health Follow-up Study, a population-based cohort of breast cancer survivors self-identifying as Black or African American. Neighborhood disinvestment was from a virtual audit of six indicators-garbage, graffiti, dumpsters

Epidemiology of antimicrobial-resistant diarrheagenic Escherichia coli pathotypes from children, livestock and food in dagoretti south, Nairobi Kenya.

Peri-urban environments, characterized by dense human populations, cohabiting livestock, and complex food systems, serve as hotspots for food contamination and infectious diseases. Children aged 6-24 months are particularly vulnerable, as they often encounter contaminated food and water, increasing their risk of food-borne disease, with diarrhea being a common symptom. We investigated the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in pathogenic Escherichia coli from children 6-24 months of age, their food, and cohabiting livestock, in Dagoretti South subcounty in Nairobi, Kenya. Of 540 stool

Use of semi-permeable bag materials to facilitate on-site treatment of biological agent-contaminated waste.

Clean up following the wide-area release of a persistent biological agent has the potential to generate significant waste. Waste containing residual levels of biological contaminants may require off-site shipment under the U.S. Department of Transportation's (US DOT) solid waste regulations for Category A infectious agents, which has packaging and size limitations that do not accommodate large quantities. Treating the waste on-site to inactivate the bio-contaminants could alleviate the need for Category A shipping and open the possibility for categorizing the waste as conventional solid waste

Micromobility Vehicles, Obstructions, and Rider Safety Behaviors in New York City Bike Lanes.

Micromobility vehicles (MMVs) have become increasingly popular, particularly in urban areas where infrastructure has improved in recent years to facilitate their use. The purpose of this study was to observe protected bike lanes in 10 zones of Manhattan, NYC to: (1) describe the MMVs in bike lanes by type, phone and helmet use; and (2) document MMV users' responses to obstructions. Approximately 1 in 4 of all riders (260/998) were wearing a helmet. Fewer than 2% were observed using a phone while moving. Fewer than 9% of Citi Bike users were wearing a helmet. In contrast, over one-third of non-

Premature Deaths Attributable to Long-term Exposure to Ambient Fine Particulate Matter in the Republic of Korea.

BACKGROUND: Ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is the major environmental health risk factor in Korea. Exposure to PM2.5 has been a growing public concern nationwide. With the rapid aging of the Korean population, the health effects attributable to long-term exposure to PM2.5 were expected to increase further in the future. We aimed to estimate premature deaths attributable to long-term exposure to ambient PM2.5 in Korea. METHODS: A modelled estimation of long-term exposure to PM2.5 was used to calculate the nationwide exposure level. Hazard ratios of long-term exposure to PM2.5 were obt

Interventions to reduce needle stick injuries at a tertiary care centre.

BACKGROUND: Occupational exposure to blood/body fluids is associated with risk of infection with blood borne pathogens like human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We carefully document needle stick injuries (NSI) and implement post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). We report a four-year continuing surveillance study where 342 healthcare workers (HCWs) sustained NSI. PEP was given to HCWs injured from seropositive sources. If the source was HbsAg positive, HCWs were given a hepatitis B immunization booster. If the HCW was antiH

Ecological risk assessment for metal(oid)s in microplastics and sediments at different depths from cenotes (sinkholes) of Yucatan, Mexico.

Karst aquifers, such as cenotes, are important sources of drinking water and economic income, as well as representing natural and cultural wealth. In this study, metal(oid)s were determined in microplastics and sediments from eight cenotes (sinkholes) in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Sediment samples were collected from eight cenotes by diving at different depths ranging from 2 to 32 m. The mean (±SD) of microplastic particles (MPs) in the sediments was 43.10 ± 50.58 MP/kg. The most abundant polymers were polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyamides (PA) and polyester (PES)

Impact of Educational Intervention on Hygiene Knowledge and Practices of Sanitation Workers Globally: A Systematic Review.

Background: Sanitation workers are also known as 'garbage workers' who play a significant role in the sanitation chain. For many generations, sanitation workers' level of knowledge regarding hygiene practices remains low due to a lack of educational programs on hygiene. As a result, they are widely exposed to hygiene-related diseases such as cholera, skin infections and various other diseases, increasing their risk of mortality to 40%. This review aims to explore the global impact of educational programs on the hygiene knowledge and practices of sanitation workers. Methods: The systematic lite

Anthropogenic litter in terrestrial flora and fauna: Is the situation as bad as in the ocean? A field study in Southern Germany on five meadows and 150 ruminants in comparison with marine debris.

In contrast to the abundance of research on marine debris, terrestrial anthropogenic litter and its impacts are largely lacking scientific attention. Therefore, the main objective of the present study is to find out whether ingested litter produces pathological consequences to the health of domestic ruminants, as it does in their relatives in the ocean, the cetaceans. For this purpose, five meadows (49°18'N, 10°24'E) with a total survey area of 139,050 m2 as well as the gastric content of 100 slaughtered cattle and 50 slaughtered sheep have been examined for persistent man-made debris in North

HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis and incidence of sexually transmitted infections in Brazil, 2018 to 2022: An ecological study of PrEP administration, syphilis, and socioeconomic indicators.

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is one of the pillars of a combination prevention strategy for reducing the risk of new infections caused by HIV. The daily use of antiretroviral drugs by individuals who are not infected with HIV is required to prevent infection. Although its efficacy has been well established in the literature, in recent years, the decreased supply of antiretroviral drugs has been associated with an increase in the incidence of sexually transmitted infections (STI) and changes in the social determinants of health. An ecological st
