The Responders' Gender Stereotypes Modulate the Strategic Decision-Making of Proposers Playing the Ultimatum Game.

Despite the wealth of studies investigating factors affecting decisions, not much is known about the impact of stereotypical beliefs on strategic economic decision-making. In the present study, we used the ultimatum game paradigm to investigate how participants playing as proposer modulate their strategic economic behavior, according to their game counterparts' stereotypical identity (i.e., responders). The latter were introduced to the participants using occupational role nouns stereotypically marked with gender paired with feminine or masculine proper names (e.g., linguist-Anna; economist-Da

Zika virus public health crisis and the perpetuation of gender inequality in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: In 2015-2017, the Americas experienced a highly consequential epidemics for pregnancy and childbearing. Mainly transmitted by the mosquito Aedes aegypti, but also through sexual intercourse, the Zika virus poses the risk of congenital Zika syndrome to fetus, which includes microcephaly and other child development complications. When a public health crisis taps directly into reproductive health, typically a feminine realm, responses to the emergency may exacerbate deeply-rooted gender norms. This paper investigates the role of gender in two relational contexts: (a) the government-le

HIV-associated Kaposi sarcoma and gender.

BACKGROUND: Cancer in individuals living with HIV and AIDS is a common source of morbidity and mortality, especially in the underdeveloped world. As antiretrovirals are distributed with greater equity across the globe, individuals with HIV and AIDS are living longer and developing malignancies, as opposed to other opportunistic infections. OBJECTIVE: This article reviews the gender differences in studies of AIDS-associated cancers, examining factors related to transmission, treatment, and outcome. METHODS: MEDLINE, PubMed, Ovid, conference proceedings, and abstract books were searched from 1

Perceived Gender Presentation Among Transgender and Gender Diverse Youth: Approaches to Analysis and Associations with Bullying Victimization and Emotional Distress.

PURPOSE: As measures of birth-assigned sex, gender identity, and perceived gender presentation are increasingly included in large-scale research studies, data analysis approaches incorporating such measures are needed. Large samples capable of demonstrating variation within the transgender and gender diverse (TGD) community can inform intervention efforts to improve health equity. A population-based sample of TGD youth was used to examine associations between perceived gender presentation, bullying victimization, and emotional distress using two data analysis approaches. METHODS: This seconda

Assessing Availability of HIV/Sexually Transmitted and Blood-Borne Infection Prevention and Care Services for Trans Women and Gender Diverse People in Ontario, Canada: An Environmental Scan of Clinic Websites.

Trans and gender diverse (TGD) people have heightened vulnerability to HIV/sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBIs) driven, in part, by anti-trans stigma, yet they also face barriers to HIV/STBBI prevention and care. Integrating gender-affirming health care (GAHC; e.g., gender-affirming hormone therapy) with HIV/STBBI prevention/care could improve uptake of HIV/STBBI prevention/care for this population. Yet, the extent to which this integrated care is available is unknown. We conducted an environmental scan of active HIV/STBBI clinic websites in Ontario, Canada during June-Sept

Teaching Equity to Prevent Violence: The ANULA School-SAFE Framework Across Continents.

BACKGROUND: Violence against women and girls (VAWG) remains a global public health crisis, driven by structural inequalities and harmful gender norms. Schools reaching nearly every child offer unique opportunities to prevent violence, yet existing interventions are fragmented and unsustainable. We propose the ANULA SCHOOL-SAFE framework, a ten-step, culturally adaptable model that embeds prevention into education systems through four integrated pillars: Safeguard, Act, Foster, and Empower. Grounded in ecological systems, social norms, and resilience theories, the framework combines age-appropr

Power, participation, and patriarchy: a mixed-methods study of Palestinian women in political and public life with insights on health.

BACKGROUND: This study examines the extent and nature of Palestinian women’s political participation and leadership, highlighting the challenges they encounter in accessing and exercising power within political and public arenas. Despite formal policy advances, ongoing occupation, entrenched patriarchy, and political fragmentation continue to create significant barriers to meaningful political inclusion. Grounded in feminist institutionalism, the research analyzes how formal institutional frameworks and informal socio-cultural norms interact to shape women’s political engagement, while assessi

A Step Toward Bridging the Gender Gap in Deceased Donor Kidney Transplant.

OBJECTIVES: Gender disparity in access to kidney transplant is a well-established universal challenge. Prior to 2020, duration on the transplant wait list was the only criterium for deceased donor kidney transplant allocation in the state of Gujarat. In January 2020, the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization Gujarat was formed, which implemented a point system for deceased donor kidney transplant allocation policy based on human leukocyte antigen mismatch, panel reactive antibody, and donor-specific antibody, among other factors. In this system, adult female recipients are assigned 2

Sex-gender differences in diabetes vascular complications and treatment.

Diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases act as two sides of the same coin: diabetes is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease while patients with ischemic cardiovascular diseases often have diabetes or pre-diabetes. As firstly shown by Framingham study, diabetic women have an increased cardiovascular risk about 3.5 fold higher than non diabetic women, against an increase of "only" 2.1 fold found in male subjects. In view of the impact of sexual hormones on glucose homeostasis, the molecular pathways involved in insulin resistance suggest a sex-gender specificity mechanism in

Disparities in Health Care in Patients With Chronic Liver Disease.

Chronic liver disease (CLD) is increasing in prevalence worldwide. CLD has significant associated morbidity and mortality, including a negative impact on health-related quality of life (HRQOL), progression to cirrhosis, development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and need for liver transplantation. CLD disproportionately impacts racial, ethnic, sexual, and gender minorities. CLD is also more prevalent in populations experiencing challenging social determinants of health (SDOH) factors. Health disparities are prevalent across various forms of CLD, reflected in higher disease prevalence and s

Oscillating US Department of Defense policies and medical record documentation of gender dysphoria in service members: an observational time-series analysis.

BACKGROUND: United States military policies regarding service by transgender service members have shifted several times within the past decade. The relationships between policy changes and electronic health record documentation of gender dysphoria, a current and historic policy requisite for gender affirming care receipt, in active duty service members remain unknown. METHODS: Bayesian estimator of abrupt change, seasonality, and trend models identified changepoints in the proportion of service members who had new and then historical medical record documentation consistent with gender dysphor

Adolescent-Specific Nutrition Guidance Is Largely Absent from Food-Based Dietary Guidelines across Africa and Asia.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a period of rapid growth and rising nutrient needs, with girls facing additional iron requirements from menstrual losses, yet Food-Based Dietary Guidelines (FBDGs) in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) inadequately address these needs. OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the adequacy and equity of national FBDGs and government-run adolescent nutrition programs in supporting adolescent nutrition and anemia prevention across 8 LMICs in Africa and Asia. METHODS: A structured desk review of national FBDGs and government-led adolescent nutrition programs was cond

Do Friend Support and Strain Moderate the Association Between Physical Limitations and Older Adults' Depressive Symptoms?

Stress theories propose that the mental health consequences of physical health problems are buffered by social support and amplified by relationship strain, yet it is unclear how older adults' friendships moderate these associations. Using data from 2016 and 2018 waves of the Health and Retirement Study (N = 8,558), we evaluate whether associations between number of physical limitations and depressive symptoms (CES-D) are moderated by friend support and strain, and whether these patterns differ by gender and partnership status. Multivariable OLS regressions show friend strain amplifies and fri

Immigration Policy Is Sexual and Gender Minority Health Policy: How Laws Shape Risk, Fear, and Care Avoidance.

Immigration and sexual and gender minority (SGM) policies operate as interlocking systems that shape perceived risk, generate fear, and drive care avoidance among SGM immigrants in the United States. This Perspective argues that immigration policy functions as SGM health policy by structuring eligibility, surveillance, and perceived safety within health care systems. We describe how immigration enforcement, asylum restrictions, and SGM-targeted legislation produce psychological harm and suppress care-seeking, particularly among transgender immigrants and asylum seekers. Persistent data gaps ob

Assessing hypertension care quality in Brazil: gender, race, and socioeconomic intersection in public and private services, 2013 and 2019 national health surveys.

We conducted a cross-sectional study of hypertension care in public and private services, analyzing gender, color, and socioeconomic status. Using data from the 2013 (n = 60,202) and 2019 (n = 90,846) national health surveys, hypertension prevalence increased from 21.4 to 23.9%. Quality of care declined from 41.7 to 35.4%, particularly in public services, disproportionately affecting low-income Black women. Poisson regression estimated prevalence ratios (PRs), with the lowest adjusted PR for high-quality care among low-income Black women. These findings highlight persistent health inequalities

Medical students' perceptions of their preparedness to care for LGBT patients in Taiwan: Is medical education keeping up with social progress?

INTRODUCTION: Integrating training on health equity of sexual and gender minorities (SGM) in medical education has been challenging globally despite emphasis on the need for medical students to develop competence to provide adequate care for diverse patient groups. This study elicits Taiwanese medical students' perceptions of their values and preparedness to care for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender (LGBT) patients using a qualitative approach that considers broader societal changes, and more focused topics such as the provision of relevant training in medical education. METHODS: Eighty

[Good coordination practices in community health. SESPAS Report 2026].

Community health is currently a key pillar of public health for reducing inequalities, improving quality of life, and ensuring responses tailored to local needs. However, depending on the context, discipline, or location, different perspectives are adopted, sometimes leading to heterogeneous practices and varied approaches that hinder intersectoral work and effective coordination in community health. This coordination involves co-designing interventions adapted to the social, cultural, and economic characteristics of each community, prioritizing prevention and equity, and incorporating a gende
