This study explored whether an identity-matching-based stimulus equivalence procedure could be used to teach vowel and consonant stimulus classes to 2 adolescent females with moderate mental retardation. Delayed match-to-sample trials presented a compound sample stimulus consisting of printed letters and a spoken word ("vowel" or "consonant"). The correct comparison stimulus matched only one of the letters in the compound sample. Subsequently, test trials assessed whether arbitrary relations had formed among the individual stimuli from each compound sample and whether stimuli from different co

The intent of this investigation was to establish a valid and sensitive computer measurement technique for educational assessment applications. An integral part of the investigation was to establish the similarities and differences in how prior reinforcement histories of individual stimuli affect attention to compound visual cues for young children of normal development versus adolescents with severe mental retardation, both groups having comparable mental age. A series of identical conflict compound discrimination tasks was presented to the two groups. In addition, generalization effects were

The rising legal acceptance of cannabis and the high comorbidity between cannabis use disorder (CUD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) highlight the importance of understanding how stress and cannabis influence the brain. We recently discovered that cannabinoid use promotes two PTSD-like symptoms: avoidance coping behaviors and the generalization of stress-coping responses to a neutral stimulus. Here, we used in vivo zymography and confocal microscopy to examine how stress and cannabinoid use influence multipartite synaptic plasticity. Specifically, we assessed astroglial plasticity, S

Oscillatory synchronization in the theta-frequency band was found to play a causal role in binding information of different modalities in declarative memory. Moreover, there is first evidence from a laboratory study that theta-synchronized (vs. asynchronized) multimodal input in a classical fear conditioning paradigm resulted in better discrimination of a threat-associated stimulus when compared to perceptually similar stimuli never associated with the aversive unconditioned stimulus (US). Effects manifested in affective ratings and ratings of contingency knowledge. However, theta-specificity

Task-specific improvement in performance after training is well established. The finding that learning is stimulus-specific and does not transfer well between different stimuli, between stimulus locations in the visual field, or between the two eyes has been used to support the notion that neurons or assemblies of neurons are modified at the earliest stage of cortical processing. However, a debate regarding the proposed mechanism underlying perceptual learning is an ongoing issue. Nevertheless, generalization of a trained task to other functions is an important key, for both understanding the

The decision of where to make an eye movement is thought to be driven primarily by responses to stimuli in neurons' receptive fields (RFs) in oculomotor areas, including the frontal eye field (FEF) of prefrontal cortex. It is also thought that a saccade may be generated when the accumulation of this activity in favor of one location or another reaches a threshold. However, in the reading and scene perception fields, it is well known that the properties of the stimulus at the fovea often affect when the eyes leave that stimulus. We propose that if FEF plays a role in generating eye movements, t

Hippocampal participation in classical conditioning is described in terms of a multilayer network that portrays stimulus configuration. The network (a) describes behavior in real time, (b) incorporates a layer of "hidden" units positioned between input and output units, (c) includes inputs that are connected to the output directly as well as indirectly through the hidden-unit layer, and (d) uses a biologically plausible backpropagation procedure to train the hidden-unit layer. Nodes and connections in the neural network are mapped onto regional cerebellar, cortical, and hippocampal circuits, a

Vertebrate olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) are stimulated in a rhythmic manner in vivo, driven by delivery of odorants to the nasal cavity carried by the inhaled air, making olfaction a sense where animals can control the frequency of stimulus delivery. How ORNs encode repeated stimulation at resting, low breathing frequencies and at increased sniffing frequencies is not known, nor is it known if the olfactory transduction cascade is accurate and fast enough to follow high frequency stimulation. We investigated mouse olfactory responses to stimulus frequencies mimicking odorant exposure duri

Repeated information in visual input can improve behavioral performance in visual working memory (VWM) under capacity limitations. However, it remains unclear whether neural activity scales with the amount of perceptual redundancy in the same way as behavioral performance. Such activity may vary gradually with perceptual redundancy, or it may follow a pattern in which fully redundant arrays elicit neural activity patterns distinct from those elicited by arrays containing any orientation differences. Conventional behavioral measures and univariate event-related potentials (ERPs) cannot fully di

The present study was designed to investigate the involvement of opioidergic component as well as to study GABAergic mechanisms in the expression of heroin discrimination. Male Wistar rats were trained to discriminate heroin (0.5 mg/kg, i.p.) from saline (i.p.) in a two-choice water reinforced fixed ratio (FR) 20 drug discrimination paradigm. In substitution tests, heroin (0.0625-0.5 mg/kg) and morphine (0.5-2 mg/kg, i.p.) evoked a dose-dependent generalization for the drug lever-responding, while muscimol (1 mg/kg, i.p., a GABA(A) receptor agonist) produced a weak partial substitution (ca. 48

A behavioral technique often used to evaluate the cognitive performance of rats and mice is the fear conditioning paradigm. During conditioned fear experiments, freezing responses shown by rodents after exposure to environmental stimuli previously paired to an aversive experience provide a behavioral index of the animal's associative abilities. The present study examined the ability of a computer-controlled automated Freeze Monitor system for recording immobility behavior in mice. The sensitivity of the automated procedure to detect group differences caused by the application of various traini

Purpose This investigation compared 2 treatment approaches for acquired apraxia of speech. The effects of a treatment that uses an articulatory-kinematic approach in conjunction with visual biofeedback (VBFB) via electropalatography (EPG) were compared to Sound Production Treatment (SPT), an established behavioral treatment that is also an articulatory-kinematic approach. Method A multiple baseline design across behaviors and participants was used with 2 participants with chronic apraxia of speech and aphasia. Accuracy of target speech sounds in treated and untreated words or phrases in probe

BACKGROUND: Needle phobias are common in children and adults worldwide. One effective intervention for this phobia is exposure therapy where a participant is gradually exposed to increasing levels of the fear-evoking stimulus while differential reinforcement is applied. This intervention, however, may be difficult to implement with some medical procedures as it may be difficult to obtain unfettered access to medical facilities and equipment for the purposes of exposure. Virtual reality may overcome these obstacles.
METHODS: In this investigation, the present authors developed a low-cost virtu

BACKGROUND: Researchers have used logistic regression (LR) and non-linear response surface models (RSMs) to predict patient responses to sedation. The reduced Greco and hierarchy RSMs have proven to be more appropriate than other RSMs in gastrointestinal endoscopies using midazolam and alfentanil. In this study, we evaluate the performance of a simpler model, LR, and compared it with that of RSM.
METHODS: Thirty-three patients who received esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and colonoscopy sedation with midazolam and alfentanil were enrolled in the study. LR was performed for the EGD group and

This study was performed to examine the relevance of the quasi-withdrawal syndrome in nondependent rats to the syndrome precipitated by naltrexone in rats physically dependent upon morphine. Morphine-dependent rats trained to discriminate between SC injections of naltrexone (0.1 mg/kg) and saline were pretreated with 10 mg/kg of a phosphodiesterase inhibitor: 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX), Ro 20-1724, or papaverine. The naltrexone stimulus-generalization curve and dose-response curve for loss of body weight were shifted to the left by IBMX and Ro 20-1724, which produce quasi-withdrawal, b

The discriminative stimulus effects of the nicotine antagonist mecamylamine have been investigated to characterize further its behavioural effects and its interactions with (-)-nicotine. Rats were trained to discriminate the effects of mecamylamine from saline in a two-bar operant conditioning procedure with food reinforcers presented on a tandem schedule of reinforcement. Mecamylamine (3.5 mg/kg s.c.) acquired strong stimulus control over behaviour and there was only a small reduction in overall rates of responding. The mecamylamine stimulus generalized completely to some ganglion-blocking dr

Recent experiments have revealed tightly synchronized oscillatory discharges in local assemblies of cortical neurons as well as phase coherency of oscillations at distant cortical sites. These findings are consistent with the theory of neuronal group selection, a population theory of brain function that is based on the properties of local groups of neurons. A set of computer simulations shows that cooperative interactions within and among neuronal groups can generate the observed phenomena. In the simulations, oscillations within neuronal groups are generated through local excitatory and inhib

Rhythmic activity in the tongue and other oral muscles was evoked by mechanical stimulation of the hard palate in ketamine-anaesthetized rats. The relation between neural discharges of single hypoglossal motoneurones and activity in the masseter and anterior digastric muscle, and stimulus parameters was analysed. By varying the stimulus parameters, hypoglossal-motoneurone activity was modulated from phasic reflex activity into rhythmic activity. The tongue and other recorded muscles are likely to be controlled by the same pattern-rhythm generator, when rhythmic activity is induced by palatal s

Determining the role of intraparietal sulcus (IPS) regions in working memory (WM) remains a topic of considerable interest and lack of clarity. One group of hypotheses, the internal attention view, proposes that the IPS plays a material general role in maintaining information in WM. An alternative viewpoint, the pure storage account, proposes that the IPS in each hemisphere maintains material specific (e.g., left--phonological; right--visuospatial) information. Yet, adjudication between competing theoretical perspectives is complicated by divergent findings from different methodologies and the
