Tuning hyperparameters of machine learning algorithms and deep neural networks using metaheuristics: A bioinformatics study on biomedical and biological cases.

The performance of a model in machine learning problems highly depends on the dataset and training algorithms. Choosing the right training algorithm can change the tale of a model. While some algorithms have a great performance in some datasets, they may fall into trouble in other datasets. Moreover, by adjusting hyperparameters of an algorithm, which controls the training processes, the performance can be improved. This study contributes a method to tune hyperparameters of machine learning algorithms using Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) and Genetic algorithm (GA) metaheuristics. Also, 11 differ

Novel technology for rapid species-specific detection of Bacillus spores.

There is an urgent need for a small, inexpensive sensor that can rapidly detect bio-warfare agents with high specificity. Bacillus anthracis, the causative agent of anthrax, would be a perilous disease-causing organism in the event of a release. Currently, most anthrax detection research is based on nucleic acid detection, immunoassays and mass spectrometry, with few detection levels reported below 10(5) spores. Here, we show the ability to distinguish Bacillus spores to a level approaching 10(3) spores, below the reported median infectious dose of B. anthracis, using pyrolysis--micromachined

Evaluation of Machine Learning Models for Predicting Breeding Values of Key Performance Traits in Iranian Crossbred (Thoroughbred × Turkmen) Racehorses.

BACKGROUND: Accurate prediction of breeding values (BVs) is fundamental to genetic improvement in racehorses. Although single-trait mixed models (STM), typically implemented using BLUP-based procedures, remain the standard framework for genetic evaluation, machine learning (ML) methods offer a flexible, data-driven approach for learning complex relationships among phenotypic, environmental, and pedigree-derived information. These capabilities have encouraged researchers to explore the application of ML methods for predicting breeding values. OBJECTIVES: This study compared the performance of

Bi-objective bus scheduling optimization with passenger perception in mind.

With the development of big traffic data, bus schedules should be changed from the traditional "empirical" rough scheduling to "responsive" accurate scheduling to meet the travel needs of passengers. Based on passenger flow distribution, considering passengers' feelings of congestion and waiting time at the station, we establish a Dual-Cost Bus Scheduling Optimization Model (Dual-CBSOM) with the optimization objectives of minimizing bus operation and passenger travel costs. Improving the classical Genetic Algorithm (GA) by adaptively determining the crossover probability and mutation probabili

Determination of Cole-Cole parameters using only the real part of electrical impedivity measurements.

An algorithm is presented to determine the Cole-Cole parameters of electrical impedivity using only measurements of its real part. The algorithm is based on two multi-fold direct inversion methods for the Cole-Cole and Debye equations, respectively, and a genetic algorithm for the optimization of the mean square error between experimental and calculated data. The algorithm has been developed to obtain the Cole-Cole parameters from experimental data, which were used to screen cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia. The proposed algorithm was compared with different numerical integrations of the Kr

A multi-product, multi-period vaccine supply chain network planning with injection centers and storage conditions.

This study develops a mixed-integer linear programming model for a multi-product, multi-period vaccine supply chain network that incorporates injection centers and heterogeneous storage conditions, including cold and ultra-cold refrigeration. The model captures key operational decisions such as distribution center location, vaccine allocation, and storage configuration under capacity and demand constraints, while ensuring no shortage at injection centers. To efficiently solve large-scale instances, a tailored genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed. The main achievements of this research are as fol

An algorithmic approach towards diagnosis of patients with hereditary reticulate pigmentary disorders: a narrative review.

Hereditary reticulate pigmentary disorders include a group of genetic disorders, with netlike pigmentation as their predominant presentation. Many of these hereditary reticulate pigmentary disorders have a wide array of cutaneous presentations with overlapping features. Furthermore, some of these disorders also have systemic manifestations. The overlapping features often add confusion and cause delay in diagnosis. Based on a literature search, we propose an easy-to-follow and concise diagnostic algorithm for diagnosis. This algorithm would aid in ordering a definitive genetic test. A thorough

Accommodating uncertainty in a tree set for function estimation.

Multiple branching trees have been used to model the acquisition of HIV drug resistance mutations, and several different algorithms have been developed to construct the tree set that best describes the data. These algorithms have mainly focused on the structure of the tree set. The focal point of this paper is estimation of functions of the tree set parameters that incorporate uncertainty in the tree set. The functions of interest are the state probabilities, the co-occurrence of mutations and the order of acquisition. Such functions are of interest because they help characterize the genetic p

Optimizing Fenton-like process, homogeneous at neutral pH for ciprofloxacin degradation: Comparing RSM-CCD and ANN-GA.

Antibiotics are considered among the most non-biodegradable environmental contaminants due to their genetic resistance. Considering the importance of antibiotics removal, this study was aimed at multi-objective modeling and optimization of the Fenton-like process, homogeneous at initial circumneutral pH. Two main issues, including maximizing Ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal and minimizing sludge to iron ratio (SIR), were modeled by comparing central composite design (CCD) based on Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and hybrid Artificial Neural Network-Genetic Algorithm (ANN-GA). Results of simultan

Automatic detection of Alzheimer's disease from EEG signals using an improved AFS-GA hybrid algorithm.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by energy diffusion and partial disconnection in the brain, with its main feature being an insidious onset and subtle clinical symptoms. Electroencephalogram (EEG) as a primary tool for assessing and aiding in the diagnosis of brain diseases has been widely used in AD detection. Accurate diagnosis is crucial for preventing the transition from early cognitive impairment to AD and providing early treatment for AD patients. This study aims to establish a hybrid model based on the Improved Artificial Fish Swarm Algorithm (IAFS)

Overview of Medical Evaluation of Unilateral and Bilateral Hearing Loss in Children.

Early identification, treatment, and medical evaluation of childhood hearing loss are essential to promoting language and social development, regardless of their age of presentation. Evaluation of hearing loss in children should prioritize reversible and treatable causes. Multiple algorithms have been established to address the changing prevalence of genetic or infectious contributions to hearing loss and include recommendations on laboratory testing, imaging, and genetic testing. Despite these recommendations, significant practice variation remains on assessing the etiology of hearing loss in
