Behavioral evaluation of BALB/c (Mus musculus) mice infected with genetically distinct strains of Toxoplasma gondii.

In relation to behavioral changes in rodents infected with Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii), it is believed that the genotype of the infecting strain can have some influence. In this sense, the present work has sought to evaluate the effect of chronic infection by genetically distinct cystogenic strains of T. gondii on the behavior of mice. For this, experimental models of infection with ME-49 (type II) and VEG (type III) strains were developed in isogenic BALB/c mice. ELISA test was performed to evaluate the humoral immune response and real-time PCR test to quantify parasites in the CNS. Behavio

Genetic suppression of agrin reduces mania-like behavior in Na+ , K+ -ATPase α3 mutant mice.

Myshkin mice heterozygous for an inactivating mutation in the neuron-specific Na(+) ,K(+) -ATPase α3 isoform show behavior analogous to mania, including an abnormal endogenous circadian period. Agrin is a proteoglycan implicated as a regulator of synapses that has been proposed to inhibit activity of Na(+) ,K(+) -ATPase α3. We examined whether the mania-related behavior of Myshkin mice could be rescued by a reduction in the expression of agrin through genetic knockout. The suppression of agrin reduced hyperambulation and holeboard exploration, restored anxiety-like behavior (or reduced risk-ta

Clinical and genetic outcome determinants of Internet- and group-based cognitive behavior therapy for social anxiety disorder.

OBJECTIVE: No study has investigated clinical or genetic predictors and moderators of Internet-based cognitive behavior therapy (ICBT) compared with cognitive behavioral group therapy for (CBGT) for SAD. Identification of predictors and moderators is essential to the clinician in deciding which treatment to recommend for whom. We aimed to identify clinical and genetic (5-HTTLPR, COMTval158met, and BDNFval66met) predictors and moderators of ICBT and CBGT. METHOD: We performed three types of analyses on data from a sample comprising participants (N = 126) who had undergone ICBT or CBGT in a ran

Behavioral and genetic evidence for a novel animal model of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Predominantly Inattentive Subtype.

BACKGROUND: According to DSM-IV there are three subtypes of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, namely: ADHD predominantly inattentive type (ADHD-PI), ADHD predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Type (ADHD-HI), and ADHD combined type (ADHD-C). These subtypes may represent distinct neurobehavioral disorders of childhood onset with separate etiologies. The diagnosis of ADHD is behaviorally based; therefore, investigations into its possible etiologies should be based in behavior. Animal models of ADHD demonstrate construct validity when they accurately reproduce elements of the etiology, bioch

Genetic parameters of feeding behavior traits and multi-tissue transcriptomic comparison of divergent feeding patterns in ducks.

Feeding behavior is a key factor influencing growth performance and feed efficiency in poultry, yet its complex phenotypes remain difficult to quantify accurately, limiting the application of large-scale behavioral data in genetic and molecular analyses. In this study, feeding behavior and feed efficiency-related phenotypes were recorded in 829 Tianfu Nonghua ducks using an automated feeding monitoring system integrated with radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. Genetic parameter estimation indicated that the heritability of feeding behavior traits ranged from 0.25 to 0.39. Individ

Executive function mediates the effects of genetic liability to schizophrenia on behavior and functioning in a community sample of children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Genetic liability for schizophrenia has been associated with cognitive deficits and clinical phenotypes during neurodevelopment. However, the possible role of executive function (EF) as a mediator between the polygenic risk score for schizophrenia (PRS-SZ) and subsequent outcomes, including transdiagnostic general psychopathology (the p-factor), has yet to be examined. In this study, we investigated whether EF mediates the effect of PRS-SZ on psychopathology and functional phenotypes in a community-based youth sample. STUDY DESIGN: We analyzed cross-sectional data from 698 partici

Genetic parameters for novel behavioral traits for cows housed under automatic milking systems with a focus on learning.

Automatic milking systems (AMS) are increasingly used in dairy farming, highlighting the importance that cows adapt to this technical environment. This study characterized novel AMS traits related to learning behavior and milking temperament and evaluated their phenotypic and genetic properties to assess their suitability for breeding. It was investigated whether pre-lactational familiarization to AMS is related to cow-robot-performance and behavior during 1st parity and to what extent cow-AMS-interactions develop across parities (1st - 5th+ parity). AMS-derived traits rejected milkings (RM) a

Perceived Stress and Disordered Eating Behaviors in Emerging Adulthood: A Multidimensional Pilot Study of Dietary and Genetic Factors.

BACKGROUND: Subclinical disordered eating behaviors (DEBs) are common among young women and are thought to result from complex interactions between psychological, dietary, and genetic factors. While chronic stress and unhealthy dietary habits have been implicated in the development of DEBs, the independent and interactive contributions of perceived stress, added sugar intake, and genetic susceptibility remain insufficiently understood. This pilot study investigated these associations using a two-stage case-control design. METHODS: A total of 100 female university students (18-27 years) comple

Genetic associations between orexin genes and phenotypes related to behavioral regulation in humans, including substance use.

The hypothalamic neuropeptide system of orexin (hypocretin) neurons provides projections throughout the neuraxis and has been linked to sleep regulation, feeding and motivation for salient rewards including drugs of abuse. However, relatively little has been done to examine genes associated with orexin signaling and specific behavioral phenotypes in humans. Here, we tested for association of twenty-seven genes involved in orexin signaling with behavioral phenotypes in humans. We tested the full gene set, functional subsets, and individual genes involved in orexin signaling. Our primary phenoty

Mild behavioral impairment in early Alzheimer's disease and its association with APOE and BDNF risk genetic polymorphisms.

BACKGROUND: Mild behavioral impairment (MBI) has been commonly reported in early Alzheimer's disease (AD) but rarely using biomarker-defined samples. It is also unclear whether genetic polymorphisms influence MBI in such individuals. We thus aimed to examine the association between the cognitive status of participants (amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI-AD) vs cognitively normal (CN) older adults) and MBI severity. Within aMCI-AD, we further examined the association between APOE and BDNF risk genetic polymorphisms and MBI severity. METHODS: We included 62 aMCI-AD participants and 50 CN

Using the Strategy of Genome-Wide Association Studies to Identify Genetic Markers of Suicidal Behavior: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Several studies involving various suicidal phenotypes based on the strategy of the search of genome-wide associations with single nucleotide polymorphisms have been performed recently. These studies need to be generalized. AIM: To systematize the findings of a number of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for suicidal phenotypes, annotate the identified markers, analyze their functionality, and possibly substantiate the hypothesis holding that these phenotypes reflect a nonspecific set of gene variants that are relevant as relates to stress-vulnerability as a key endophenotype

Genetic loss of the dopamine transporter significantly impacts behavioral and molecular responses to sub-chronic stress in mice.

Dopaminergic neurotransmission has emerged as a critical determinant of stress susceptibility and resilience. Although the dopamine transporter (DAT) is known to play a key role in maintaining dopamine (DA) homeostasis, its importance for the regulation of stress susceptibility remains largely unknown. Indeed, while numerous studies have examined the neurochemical and behavioral consequences of genetic loss of DAT, very few have compared responses to stress in wild-type and DAT-knockout (KO) animals. The current study compared the responses of male and female WT and DAT-KO mice to a model of s

ANK3 rs10994336 and ZNF804A rs7597593 polymorphisms: genetic interaction for emotional and behavioral symptoms of alcohol withdrawal syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) is a complex condition associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD), characterized by significant variations in symptom severity among patients. The psychological and emotional symptoms accompanying AWS significantly contribute to withdrawal distress and relapse risk. Despite the importance of neural adaptation processes in AWS, limited genetic investigations have been conducted. This study primarily focuses on exploring the single and interaction effects of single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the ANK3 and ZNF804A genes on anxiety and aggression severi

Associations of sleep behaviors and genetic risk with risk of incident osteoporosis: A prospective cohort study of 293,164 participants.

BACKGROUND: Unhealthy sleep behaviors are associated with higher risks of osteoporosis (OP), while prospective evidence is limited. This study aimed to prospectively investigate this association, quantify the attributable burden of OP incidence reduction due to unhealthy sleep behaviors, and explore potential modifications by genetic risk factors. METHODS: This longitudinal cohort study was conducted utilizing data from the UK Biobank, comprising 293,164 participants initially free of OP and with requisite sleep behaviors data at baseline. We followed the participants after recruitment until

Interactive Beliefs about Genes and Behavior Predict Improved Sun Protection Following Melanoma Genetic Counseling.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about how members of cancer-prone families think about genetic determinism and whether personal behavior can amplify or counter genetic risk for disease. PURPOSE: Understanding how people think about the impact of personal behavior on disease risk may inform communications about genetic risks and their management. METHODS: We assessed three sets of beliefs about the impact of behavior on genetic risk-interactive (unhealthful behaviors can amplify genetic risk), subtractive (healthful behaviors can reduce genetic risk), and deterministic (genes primarily determine

Sex-specific genetic association between psychiatric disorders and cognition, behavior and brain imaging in children and adults.

Although there are pronounced sex differences for psychiatric disorders, relatively little has been published on the heterogeneity of sex-specific genetic effects for these traits until very recently for adults. Much less is known about children because most psychiatric disorders will not manifest until later in life and existing studies for children on psychiatric traits such as cognitive functions are underpowered. We used results from publicly available genome-wide association studies for six psychiatric disorders and individual-level data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (AB

Rescue of behavioral and electrophysiological phenotypes in a Pitt-Hopkins syndrome mouse model by genetic restoration of Tcf4 expression.

Pitt-Hopkins syndrome (PTHS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by monoallelic mutation or deletion in the transcription factor 4 (TCF4) gene. Individuals with PTHS typically present in the first year of life with developmental delay and exhibit intellectual disability, lack of speech, and motor incoordination. There are no effective treatments available for PTHS, but the root cause of the disorder, TCF4 haploinsufficiency, suggests that it could be treated by normalizing TCF4 gene expression. Here, we performed proof-of-concept viral gene therapy experiments using a conditional Tcf4 mous
