Infectious intestinal disease (IID) surveillance data are an under-utilised information source on illness geography. This paper uses a case study of cryptosporidiosis in England and Wales to demonstrate how these data can be converted into area-based rates and the factors underlying illness geography investigated. Ascertainment bias is common in surveillance datasets, and we develop techniques to investigate and control this. Rural areas, locations with many livestock and localities with poor water treatment had elevated levels of cryptosporidiosis. These findings accord with previous research

We apply and extend Philo (2000)׳s arguments about Foucault׳s Birth of the Clinic as an inspiration for health geography and the study of governance of gays. Philo identified three spaces through which he argued disease is framed: disease tabled, embodied, and institutionalized. These focus attention on the spatialities through which the medical gaze is power-laden. We adopt this framework empirically through an historical geography of an urban public health system engaged with sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the "homosexual" population of Seattle, Washington in the 1970s. It reveals

The phenotypic features of the heart with ventricular septal defects will be shown in this video tutorial. There is still no agreement as to whether it's best to categorize lesions on the basis of their geography or their borders. Both geography and borders are features that are of importance. I hope this video will persuade you that the borders are the most significant because they display the phenotypic variance and give added information about the heart regarding the location of the atrioventricular conduction axis.

Conflict poses a threat to the stability of health-care systems around the world. Within the context of immunization service delivery, conflict-affected geographies are often dogged by recurrent disease outbreaks due to the inability to administer life-saving vaccines to children residing in these areas. Essential immunization coverage is often poor in conflict-affected geographies, and within the specific context of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), multiple rounds of supplementary immunization activities are often needed to compensate for the inability to provide adequate immun

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection alters gut microbiota composition and function, but the impact of geography and antiretroviral therapy remains unclear. Here we determined gut microbiome alterations linked to HIV infection and antiretroviral treatment in 327 individuals with HIV and 260 control participants in cohorts from Uganda, Botswana and the USA via faecal metagenomics. We found that while HIV-associated taxonomic differences were mostly site specific, changes in microbial functional pathways were broadly consistent across the cohorts and exacerbated in individuals with acqui

Human gut microbiomes respond to lifestyle transitions, yet the extent to which these responses are conserved across spatio-cultural contexts remains undercharacterized. We present the South Asian MicroBiome ARray (SAMBAR), a population-scale 16S gut microbiome study of 575 adults from ten geographically and socio-culturally diverse South Asian communities. Each community was sampled in ancestral villages and urban centers, enabling controlled comparisons of geography and lifestyle. Relative to global cohorts, SAMBAR microbiomes occupy a distinct compositional space with stronger correlation t

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The Final Rule clearly states that geography should not be a determinant of a chance of a potential candidate being transplanted. There have been multiple concerns about geographic disparities in patients in need of solid organ transplantation. Allocation policy adjustments have been designed to address these concerns, but there is little evidence that the disparities have been solved. The purpose of this review is to describe the main drivers of geographic disparities in solid organ transplantation and how allocation policy changes and other potential actions could impact t

The past two decades have seen major outbreaks of influenza viruses and flaviviruses that are spread at least in part by migratory birds. Although much new information has accumulated on the natural history of the viruses, and on the geography of migration by individual bird species, no synthesis has been achieved regarding likely patterns of spread of such pathogens by migratory birds, which constitutes a large-scale challenge in understanding the geography of bird migration. We here present a first step in this direction: a summary of seasonal (breeding, wintering) distributions of all 392 N

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is associated with frequent hospitalizations. We evaluated factors associated with length of stay (LOS) and charge per day (CPD) for admissions in older (≥60 years) and younger patients (<60 years). We identified patients with ICD-9-CM codes for AML or myeloid sarcoma in the 2012 HCUP-NIS. In separate models based on age, we examined patient (sex, race, income, insurance payer, chronic conditions, chemotherapy administration, death) and hospital (type, geography) characteristics. Multivariable negative binomial regression estimated factor effects on LOS and CPD usi

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) causes morbidity and mortality in cattle. The critical roles of the respiratory microbiota in BRD have been widely studied. The nasopharynx was the most popular sampling niche for BRD pathogen studies. The oral cavity and other niches within the respiratory tract, such as nostrils and lung, are less assessed. In this study, oropharyngeal swabs (OS), nasal swabs (NS), nasopharyngeal swabs (NP), and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) were collected from calves located in four countries and analyzed for investigation of the dissimilarities and connections of the respira

BACKGROUND: Trauma and human geography studies have often overlooked how children's responses to intrafamilial abuse are shaped by the spaces surrounding them.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to explore how children experience and respond to intrafamilial abuse. In particular, the focus will be on the spatial dimensions of their responses, within environments marked by restricted mobility, continuous surveillance, and broader socio-political oppression of a marginalized minority.
METHODS: A qualitative narrative methodology was employed. In-depth interviews were conducted with 21 Palestinian Mus

The pervasiveness of mobile and sensing technologies today has facilitated the creation of Big Crowdsourced Geotagged Data (BCGD) from individual users in real time and at different locations in the city. Such ubiquitous user-generated data allow us to infer various patterns of human behavior, which helps us understand the interactions between humans and cities. In this article, we aim to analyze BCGD, including mobile consumption check-ins, urban geography data, and human mobility data, to learn a model that can unveil the impact of urban geography and human mobility on the vibrancy of reside

A growing body of literature offers a framework for understanding geographic and ecological distributions of species; a few applications of this framework have treated disease transmission systems and their geography. The general framework focuses on interactions among abiotic requirements, biotic constraints, and dispersal abilities of species as determinants of distributional areas. Disease transmission systems have key differences from other sorts of biological phenomena: Interactions among species are particularly important, interactions may be stable or unstable, abiotic conditions may be

This paper summarizes the geography of sleeping sickness disease (or Human African Trypanosomiasis, HAT) over the last 100 years in West Africa, with the objective of identifying today's priority areas for the sleeping sickness surveillance. The history and geography of the disease are based on a bibliographic review of old reports and recent publications on recent results obtained from medical surveys conducted in West Africa up to 2007. This allowed us to situate the historical geography of HAT from the beginning of the 20th century to nowadays. For instance, active HAT foci seem to have mov

Recent research in the geography of health care moves beyond distributive concerns focusing more sensitively on the nature of health care settings. As part of this, a growing number of studies explore the importance of individuals' personal circumstances on their emplaced experiences and agency. Extending this line of inquiry, and drawing on ideas in emotional geographies, the current study illustrates how experiences and agency can be impacted profoundly by needle phobia. Interviews with 11 self-identifying sufferers explore the physical, emotional, behavioral and spatial manifestations of th

With the incidence of Lyme and other tickborne diseases on the rise in the US and globally, there is a critical need for data-driven tools that communicate the magnitude of this problem and help guide public health responses. We present the Johns Hopkins Lyme and Tickborne Disease Dashboard (https://www.hopkinslymetracker.org/), a new tool that harnesses the power of geography to raise awareness and fuel research and scientific collaboration. The dashboard is unique in applying a geographic lens to tickborne diseases, aiming not only to become a global tracker of tickborne diseases but also to

BACKGROUND: Discussions continue as to whether ventricular septal defects are best categorized according to their right ventricular geography or their borders. This is especially true when considering the perimembranous defect. Our aim, therefore, was to establish the phenotypic feature of the perimembranous defect, and to establish the ease of distinguishing its geographical variants.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We assessed unrepaired isolated perimembranous ventricular defects from six historic archives, subcategorizing them using the ICD-11 coding system. We identified 365 defects, of which 94 (2

BACKGROUND: In recent years, socioeconomic factors have been found to have a profound impact on health outcomes in the realm of head and neck cancer. In this study, we sought to understand the impact of demographic and socioeconomic factors on adjuvant treatment and survival outcomes in patients with early-stage, oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of the National Cancer Database (NCDB) for patients with primary, early stage (cT1-T2, N0) oral tongue SCC from 2004 to 2017. We performed univariable and multivariable logistic regression to ide

We present some evidence that there exists a positive relationship between the incidence of gastric cancer and the prevalence rate of chronic gastritis, regarding the time trends and geography of these diseases in Finland. Both gastric cancer and chronic gastritis have declined in occurrence during the last 15 years, and there exists a similar geographic distribution of these diseases in Finland on the north-south axis: both are more prevalent in Lapland than in Southern Finland. The distribution of the socioeconomic conditions in Finland also shows a north-south axis: the proportion of people

This paper examines the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic and its related economic, fiscal, social and political fallout on cities and metropolitan regions. We assess the effect of the pandemic on urban economic geography at the intra- and inter-regional geographic scales in the context of four main forces: the social scarring instilled by the pandemic; the lockdown as a forced experiment; the need to secure the urban built environment against future risks; and changes in the urban form and system. At the macrogeographic scale, we argue the pandemic is unlikely to significantly alter the winner-
