The vertical distribution and fate of microplastics at the water-sediment interface remain insufficiently understood in energetic estuarine environments. In this study, surface water, bottom water, and sediments were investigated in the Changjiang Estuary during May and August 2020 to compare the composition, size distribution, and environmental associations of microplastics across environmental compartments. To improve the recovery of high-density polymers in sediments, a saturated potassium formate solution with a density of 1.5 g/cm3 was used for sediment flotation. Clear compositional diff

Understanding the influence of urban land uses on PFAS contamination in urban runoff and receiving marine environments is critical for effective urban coastal contaminant management. However, data on PFAS contamination in urban runoff and marine receiving environments under low-flow (dry weather) conditions, which represent baseline contamination, are scarce. This study assessed the influence of urban land uses on PFAS occurrence and fate in urban runoff and adjacent marine environments under low-flow conditions. Water and co-located sediment samples were collected from five sites representing

Microbial life can be found in the continental subsurface down to depths of several kilometers, where it may affect mineral-forming and reaction processes. Sulfur isotopes provide an important tool for discriminating between deep microbial activity and abiotic processes. Here, we report the sulfur isotopic composition (δ34S) of pyrite in selenide-rich domains of hematite-carbonate ± selenide veins hosted in black shales from Tilkerode, Harz Mountains (Germany). Framboidal pyrite (PyII) occurs in voids in clausthalite (PbSe) formed by hematite and carbonate dissolution, but is also enclosed in

Sediment reducing capacity (RC) regulates benthic habitat function and the biogeochemical cycling of carbon, nutrients, and pollutants. However, the compositional complexity and dynamic responses of RC to redox alternation remain inadequately characterized. Through laboratory stimulation experiments of redox alternation with 20 freshwater sediments from four water bodies with distinct trophic status in China (Honghu Lake: HL, n = 3; Xiashan Reservoir: XR, n = 6; Yudong Reservoir: YR, n = 7; and Zhanghe Reservoir: ZR, n = 4), we monitored the dynamics of RC and its fractions (RCpH7.0, RCpH2.0),

Increasing anthropogenic activities and carbon aging processes pose a significant global concern to understanding the accumulation mechanisms of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments, especially regarding the overlooked role of nonextractable residues (NERs). Herein, we investigated the accumulation patterns of three PAHs fractions (bioavailable-BPAHs, extractable -EPAHs, and NERs), hydrodynamic conditions, and organic matter sources of sediment across different types lakes. This study reveals a previously overlooked potential relationship among anthropogenic factors, hydrodynam

Plastic pollution presents escalating threats to coastal ecosystems, with limited insights available from Southeast India. This study investigated vertical and horizontal stratification of macroplastics (>25 mm), mesoplastics (5-25 mm), and microplastics (<5 mm) in sediments of Rameswaram, Tuticorin, and Pichavaram. Stratified cores (15, 50, 75 cm) were analyzed for plastic morphology, polymer composition (FTIR), surface degradation (SEM-EDX), granulometry, and organic matter. Rameswaram exhibited the highest loads (up to 2800 ± 125 particles/kg dry sediment), driven by coarse, permeable sedim

The decline of hypersaline lakes, such as Maharloo Lake, presents significant ecological challenges. That highlights the need to comprehensively analyze the changing dynamics driven by human activities and climate change. Satellite imagery analysis from 1987 to 2022 reveals that the surface area of Maharloo Lake has decreased from 270 to 252 square kilometers due to land use changes. Moreover, the water level of the lake has declined by 30% during the wet season (May) and 90.2% during the dry season (October). The primary factors contributing to this decline include changes in temperature, pot

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a cornerstone strategy for achieving Net Zero emissions, yet the role of microbial life in subsurface CO2 storage remains underexplored. This mini-review highlights the deep biosphere as a key but overlooked player in CCS operations across saline aquifers, depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs and basalt formations. It synthesizes evidence that microbial communities can both compromise and enhance CO2 storage via processes like methanogenesis, sulfidogenesis, corrosion and carbonate mineralization. Drawing on insights from hydrocarbon extraction and early CCS case

Coastal ecosystems, like many others on the planet, face chronic threats from anthropogenic activities. The Alang-Sosiya Ship Breaking Yard (ASSBY) located near Bhavnagar in Gujarat, India, represents one such ecosystem impacted by decades of ship-breaking activities. This study aimed to assess the differences in microbial community composition between polluted coastal samples and pristine samples through high-throughput sequencing. Additionally, microbial co-occurrence networks and genes related to antibiotic and heavy metal resistance were predicted using metagenome mining. The analysis conf

Highly enriched plastic debris leads to an increase in dissolved organic matter derived from the degradation of plastics (PDOM), which potentially influences the stability of methane (CH4) emissions of microorganisms in mangrove sediments. Here, microcosm incubation was conducted to reveal the impacts of two PDOM on CH4 emissions from mangrove sediments. CH4 emissions from PDOM treated sediments were reduced by 0.03-0.11 ppm within 30 days. The reduction in CH4 emissions was attributed mainly to alterations in sediment properties and bacterial communities. Phosphorus-containing lignin and prot

Naturally Occurring Asbestos (NOA) has drawn the attention worldwide when investigation revealed an increased incidence of malignant mesothelioma in population living near NOA sites. In Basilicata region (South Italy), population living in the villages of Castelluccio Superiore and Inferiore, Lauria, Latronico, Episcopia, San Severino Lucano, and Francavilla in Sinni may be considered at high risk of asbestos exposure because these villages are either surrounded by or built on NOA-rich ophiolitic outcrops. In this work we investigated an asbestos tremolite sample coming from the ophiolitic roc

Wetlands produce key ecosystem services to mitigate the impacts of peak flows caused by pluvial or fluvial floods or storm surges. Sediment floods were characterized by a peak flow flowing over a simulated wetland, populated with two natural species. Floods have been drawn as flows of height H, into waters of height h, where H > h. Peak flow along the flume passed through: peak flow adjustment; peak flow; drag-dominated peak flow; and gravity current regimes. For high inundation wetland levels, settling rates of coarse and fine sediment were similar during the peak flow regime. At larger dista

Sediments are important sinks for di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), a plasticizer, and thus, maintaining the sediment quality is essential for eliminating plasticizers in aqueous environments and recovering the sediment ecological functions. To mitigate the potential risks of endocrine-disrupting compounds, identifying an effective and eco-friendly degradation process of organic pollutants from sediments is important. However, sustainable and efficient utilization of slow pyrolysis for converting shark fishbone to generate shark fishbone biochar (SFBC) has rarely been explored. Herein, SFBC

Iron is an essential trace element for living organisms, and it plays an important role in redox reactions in aquatic environments. Although many studies have investigated the application of iron materials to improve water and sediment quality, their negative effects remain unknown. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of three iron materials, i.e., zero-valent iron, iron oxide, and iron oxyhydroxide, on common benthic organisms in a coastal area via exposure experiments. In the exposure experiments, Paraprionospio patiens, a marine polychaete, exhibited abnormal behavior immediately

Eelgrass meadows have attracted much attention not only for their ability to maintain marine ecosystems as feeding grounds for marine organisms but also for their potential to store atmospheric and dissolved CO2 as blue carbon. This study comprehensively evaluated the bacterial and chemical data obtained from eelgrass sediments of different scales along the Japanese coast to investigate the effect on the acclimatization of eelgrass. Regardless of the eelgrass habitat, approximately 1% Anaerolineales, Babeliales, Cytophagales, and Phycisphaerales was present in the bottom sediment. Sulfate-redu

The efficiency and mechanism of hydrous iron oxide (HFO) and HFO/calcite mixture to inactivate the phosphorus in the overlying water (OW)/sediment system under the feed adding condition were explored, and the effect of HFO and HFO/calcite mixture addition on the diversity, composition and function of bacterial communities in the sediment was examined. HFO and HFO/calcite mixture direct addition can effectively lower the concentration of soluble reactive phosphorus (RSP) and diffusion gradient in thin film-unstable phosphorus (PDGT) in OW and inactivate the PDGT in the upper sediment. In marine sediments surrounding salmon aquaculture sites, organic matter (OM) enrichment has been shown to influence resident bacterial community composition; however, additional effects on these communities due to combined use of the sea-lice therapeutant emamectin benzoate (EMB) and the widely used antibiotic oxytetracycline (OTC) are unknown. Here, we use sediment microcosms to assess the influence of OM, EMB, and OTC on benthic bacterial communities. Microcosms consisted of mud or sand sediments enriched with OM (fish and feed wastes) and spiked with EMB and OTC at environmentally-relevant

The mobilization of arsenic (As) at the sediment-water interface (SWI) is crucial for determining the accumulation of dissolved As to potentially toxic levels. However, the specific impacts of redox processes involving iron (Fe) and sulfur (S), as well as microbial activities occurring in sediments, on As mobilization at the marine SWI remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated As mobilization at the SWI in the Changjiang Estuary during three different seasons with different benthic redox conditions. The preferential reduction of arsenate (As(V)) to arsenite (As(III)) and subsequ

Polyhalogenated carbazoles (PHCZs) are a class of emerging environmental contaminants formed by the substitution of hydrogen on carbazole (CZ) benzene rings with halogens (Cl, Br, I) with potential dioxin-like toxicity, and they have been frequently detected in various environmental media and organisms recently. Nevertheless, co-research of CZ/PHCZs with PAHs is very limited. In addition, I-PHCZs, which are believed to be much more toxic than CZ, Cl-PHCZs and Br-PHCZs, have a few data in sediments previously. The concentration and distribution of CZ/PHCZs and PAHs were analyzed in 18 surface s
